We from Sogn in Norway, call it Sognametal. A subgenre of Norwegian Black Metal from Sogn (location) in Norway. Windir is of course the founder/main band, but there is also other bands like Mistur, Cor Scorpii, Feigd and Vreid that are descendants of Windir after Valfar past away.
The lead guitar throughout is very much something I associate with folk metal. Yet the music is undeniably black metal. So I think you are right on in terms of that. So the music is written in Sognadal which is an ancient Norwegian dialect. Sverre is referenced in the song Fangning (on Likferd) as well. And this whole album I think is based around Sverre. Completely agree about the beauty of folk and black metal when it celebrates native cutlure. In Fagning the song seems (I say seems cause translations can be tricky) to be critical of Sverre. Saying in essence that he needlessly sent people off to die for his blood war. So it may be that this song is actually more about the story of this other potential warrior. But I think Sverre is central to Sognadal's history which is why he appears so often in their songs.
Sverre is the traitor of Sogndal. The hero of Sogndal is Arntor. That's why Valfar dedicates a whole album on his name. And yes, in Fagning, Valfar definitely critics Sverre, saying that he believes in the devil and he supported the christians against Sogndal people, etc
Windir is not black metal. Its folk metal. Black metal does not only describe how the music sounds. It goes deeper than that, lyrics and the general attitude of the artist plays a role. If you sing about nature, your country's history, poems and stuff like that its not black metal. Black metal is about nihilism and misanthropy. Thats the whole fucking point of black metal. If you got blastbeats and tremolo picking but sing about unicorns, is it black metal? No.
Ayamane Mabrouki Yeah I know thats what Valfar (or the fans? not really sure where it came from) called it. But folk metal is a genre that describes Windir very accurately so I'm sticking with that. Way too many idiots around who call anything black metal as long as it sounds like black metal. Just proves they dont know shit. Like morons calling Summoning black metal, give me a break
