I got a new window box! Actually it's exactly the same window box I've had for more than 14 years, just bigger. And that's due in part to finding out that Hooks & Lattice can customize window box sizes!
This video is not sponsored. Hooks & Lattice supplied the window box: www.hooksandlattice.com/xl-ha...
Oh, and by the way, you can get 15% off your order at Hooks & Lattice with the code IMPATIENT15 (through Dec. 31, 2024, not an affiliate link).

At 12:34 when the camera went to the layout of the plants on the ground I about choked! Didn’t think they’d all fit in the window box, but I should’ve known better! Cant wait to see it in future videos this summer/fall. Beautiful.

I have a window "table". It's a board 1/2"x 16" x 50". Painted to match the house, with decorative wrought-iron brackets. I can place a variety of decorative pots on the table, pumpkins, and other holiday-themed items. Fun! It's outside the kitchen window and I enjoy it thoroughly!

By far this is the best window box 'tutorial' I've ever seen. I wish I'd had this instruction years ago when I still did window boxes. The explanation about box dimensions relative to the house and the plant roots is much appreciated. Also, laying out the plants ahead of time on the ground or wagon really helps me visually.

The added width of the window box is very elegant! And the joyful, expansive collection of plants is very you. I love that you're giving gardeners permission to be extravagant in their plantings. 🌻 🌿 🌷 🌿 🌼 🌸 🌿 🌼 🌷

I have a 10 foot picture window and have a custom window box built on a sturdy free standing base. It’s almost my favorite gardening project- and I love decorating it for the 4 seasons! The base is hidden because -of course- I’ve created a garden bed in front of it. My window box is a pleasure, and it brings many compliments so other people like it too!

Dianella is used extensively in zone 9a on the Gulf coast where I live because of its heat tolerance and easy maintenance. The biggest problem I have had with it is rust and I noticed some rusty looking areas on your plants. You might want to check that out and see if it could be rust. If so, I would cut away any leaf blades that has it. That's gonna be a beautiful window box when it fills in.

Lol, wow, I think I’m still reeling about the remodel job in 2010! That was some major deconstruction. I love self watering pots-But-if there is a lot of rain they can tend to be places for mosquitoes to breed. During the drought they were a plant saver. We once made a self watering gutter system for strawberries but had to rinse it out regularly as it was open for mosquitoes to get in. It did bring frogs to the garden. And self water containers are heavy. If there is wood siding window boxes without space between can rot the siding. You really filled the box up-looks nice!

I went with vinyl window boxes but over the years with the hot sun they've now warped. Id love to replace them with some type of poly but I dont think my hubs would let me put any more holes into our house siding! On another note, you could have tapped into your drip from the opposite end of the box, that way the rose would help disguise the tubing.

Dianella! How have I never heard of this plant before? I have my eye on Dianella ‘Blaze’ with its chocolate-green foliage. The only thing that worries me is it's native to Australia. I’ve tried other Australian plants in my Pacific Northwest garden, where they winter over, and they’ve become real thugs and had to be removed. I think this one’s worth a try, though. Thanks for turning me on to this plant!

@christinefunk3208
@christinefunk3208 2 дня назад
@@lisag6796 Thanks! On your window box, are the drain holes towards the front of the box (if that makes any sense)? I think my husband worries that if water drains too close to the house, it'll deteriorate the wood siding faster.
@rhus36
@rhus36 7 дней назад
In terms of water, do you have drainage holes in the window box and if so how do you manage the runoff not streaking your siding or pooling by your foundation?
@donnatitus3457
@donnatitus3457 4 дня назад
Amazing! Erin, you’ve inspired me to place a window box under my kitchen window. Placement is very much like yours. How does the container drain without dripping on the house? How long (time) do you run the drip irrigation? Thanks! PS Loving all your experiments this year.
@TheImpatientGardener
@TheImpatientGardener 4 дня назад
I have nice big drain holes in the bottom so it drains straight down (where there happens to be a garden). I run the drip for about 20 minutes a day after things get growing a bit. Until then it’s every two or three days (I have a small valve on the white supply line so I can turn it off or on from ground level).
