!! ** ATTENTION - VIDEO UPDATE ** !!
/ YT user Daniel Lage suggested a good update to this video. When making measurements for the window, substract approx. 5mm to compensate (make room) for compressed baby bumper! Since baby bumper comes in different shapes and sizes, consider buying it first, to check how thick it is when compressed, and then do the substraction to the measurement /
* Thickness of my plexi window: 5mm

Window soundproofing DIY music studio tutorial. Super simple way. Great if you rent an apartment or don't want to do a room remodeling.
Just use a plexiglass together with a baby 'bumper'.

OMG! I was trying to figure out how to replicate the Indo window from outside the United States and you have just found a solution for me. Thank you so much. Of course they wouldn’t share what the plastic rubber material is that they use around the acrylic insert. Absolutely brilliant!

Quick question. I live in an old Italian apartment with quite tall windows that have the inner wooded panel to close at night. It’s still not enough to keep the neighbors noise down so I wanted to do the acrylic solution. Wondering if you could recommend a solution or a way to put two handles on the acrylic slab so that I can easily lift the piece in an out every evening and morning. Thanks!

Hey great video. I made something similar but I actually made it as a double inner window (wooden frame with two layers of plexiglass with a 2cm gap between them) and the result is absolutely amazing. It's completely silent now or at least to my ears.

Thanks for a great video! Does your window have double glazing in the first place? I’m also unfortunately next to a main road and live in a Victorian house with a huge single glazed window. So I’m hoping this method will significantly reduce the sound.

Just wanted to say thanks for your video - it really helped me make my own. I think however that you should add for future viewers how much you subtracted on your measurements to account for the baby bumper. Quite obviously if you measure the exact perimeter of the frame and then add the rubber seal it will not fit. Thanks again!
@istwendau

Hey! Happy to hear that the video was helpful. Regarding the subtraction, that's a good point; i had no problem with mine, since my window frame has a narrowing slope, but for other guys this definitely can be tricky, I'll put some additional info in the description.

I've been contemplating this. I've seen online sellers of plexiglass in the context of avoiding heat loss thru old windows but I haven't been able to find much about how well plexiglass actually soundproofs. Usually the answer is glass, but ofc it is hardly ideal in a scenario like this.

I'm still searching for a good compression sealer/tape to attach to the insert. For some reason I am having difficulty finding a real solid adhesive compression type strip to use for the insert. I'm open to suggestions. I will look into the "Baby Bumper" strips...thanks!

I don't have a reliable dB meter on hand, but with mine I'd say the noise is reduced more than half from what it was, suitable to record, say vocals with a condenser microphone

Hi - Thanks. You said you thought the piece you used was about 5mm. Was it really that slim? I've read to use 1/2" which I think is abour 10mm. And some even construct a unit with two 1/2" pieces with an air space in between to get good noise suppression. So that gives me my 2nd Qu how much noise cancellation do you get with just one piece? And is the existing window that was there single or double pane? Thanks
@istwendau
@istwendau 3 года назад
Hi, yes mine is 5mm, but of course you can go thicker, if heavier weight is not a big deal for you 😉 🤙

Wonderful video. Thank you so much! Super helpful and I think I can definitely tackle. Have one question for you: should I peel off the tape from the adhesive strip before applying the glue OR apply the glue directly to the tape? Thanks again!
@istwendau
@istwendau 2 года назад
Hey! Great to hear the video is useful. Mine 'baby bumper' came with the adhesive tape not applied (with a separate adhesive tape roll in the package). It's probably a good idea to ask the vendor, before buying, does the bumper comes with the adhesive already applied or separate (like in my case). Either way, don't use that adhesive tape. If it's already applied to the bumper, peal it off if possible. :)
@galitadler
@galitadler 2 года назад
@@istwendau Perfect! I found an extra thick version that doesn't have the tape already applied, so that is great news. i sourced your exact "dangerous" German glue on Amazon, as well. Lastly, I think it might be cool to share that I also bought some D Rings to attach to the outside facing bottom left and right sides of the plexi (between the bumpers and plexi), just like Indow does. Should make it easier to pull them out. I'm going to start with 1 window and see how it goes, before tackling all 5 at once and face potential disaster. I'm pretty handy, but custom cut 3' x 5' (or 93.98cm x 144.78cm), 1/4" (5.66mm) thick plexi sheets are $183.75 UDS!. If I chose a thicker 3/8" (9mm) version, the price comes to $273 USD! What do you think? ps. I'm rounding the numbers, and plan to deduct ~5mm all around to accommodate the bumpers I've chosen. Plan to bring the bumpers to the place where they cut the plexi so the cutters and I can collaborate on it in person.

Moving your insert further away from the window would create a larger air space between them, and possibly absorb more sound.

@davidmora6726

So... you don't peel off the double-side adhesive tape, right? You put thw industrial glue without peeling it off and then pasted it directly to the plexiglass? It is not coming off?

Hi, can I also ask what the size of the plastic sheet that you ordered and what it weighs? It looks like you can easily pick it up. I just got quoted a weight for a sheet of 8mm at 21kg… this has to be wrong! Haha
@istwendau
@istwendau 2 года назад
Hey Stuart, glad you liked the video. Yeah i have a double glazing window. Mine plexi is 5mm, i also wanted a thicker one (probably also a 8mm) but the guys at the shop warned me about a significant weight, so yeah, depending on the measurements 21kg seams possible. Didn't put mine on a scale, but it feels like something ~7-10kg
@stuartdoyle99
@stuartdoyle99 2 года назад
@@istwendau Thanks for the great info Pavel, that’s the exact situation I’m thinking about regarding the weight. Maybe best to play it safe and lift a weight I can lift at least. Might be able to add other forms of soundproofing on top if need be (blanket etc). It’s a pain as I live next to a street like yours and the single sheet of glass I have is cracked as well. Sod’s law as always! Thanks again for the reply :)
@goon5544
@goon5544 Год назад
did you order it the exact measurement? I'm concerned that with the baby bumper added it will not fit so maybe 1/8" less than what I measure.
@istwendau
@istwendau Год назад
Since my window frame is gradually narrowing down, it wasn't a problem for me, because I knew once the baby bumper attached I would simply put the whole insert slightly back, which I did. However, if your frame has exact measurements, then compensating slightly, makes sense. Before ordering the plexi glass, test your baby bumper by simply squeezing it between your fingers, to see how far it goes, that will give you an idea how much less the glass should be.

@istwendau
@istwendau Год назад
The type of glue I've used is showed in the video, not sure what was it's technical details. Just asked the guys at the shop, where they cut my acrylic, that I need to glue rubber to acrylic and they gave me that glue. About glue application, that thing sticks very strong, so a tiny bit is enough.
