Great video. Thanks for the helpful tips. I'm about to attempt to tint the two front windows on my 2019 F-150 FX4.... again. Hopefully the 2nd time is the charm. One thing I learned from your video is to do it indoors. Yeah, I know.. It seems like common sense now, but it never crossed my mind the first try. (I never claimed to be the sharpest tool in the toolbox anyway, so dont judge me. Haha) Tinting windows outside on a windy day is damn near impossible but I tend to learn most of my lessons the hard way, and window tinting is no exception. I live in Alabama. The sun/heat/humidity are brutal for 9 solid months out of the year. Window tint not only improves the appearance of vehicles, but it helps to survive this Hell I intentionally live in. Thanks again for the video. -Stephen Smith Hayden, Alabama
@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas 2 года назад
Haha, Thanks Stephen! Tint can really make a difference for comfort inside and protecting the plastics, as well as appearance for sure. Wind does really complicate the process indeed. You will find much more control of the film doing in some cover. Up here in North Dakota we don’t get a long summer and generally not much humidity either although it’s been worse this year with more rain than typical. Good luck on the next go. is the water just water? or little soap, like dove dish soap? I've seen starter kits with the 'cards" guess my question is about materials to get started and the water solution one would use. really like the re-purpose glass idea. I'm sure I can find the kit and water question but wanted to say thanks as well, good job.
@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas 2 года назад
Hey, thanks! The water solution is simply Johnson’s baby shampoo. Works great and is very common among installers. You can get by pretty well with a blue max or yellow turbo squeegee and a cheap bondo spreader cut at an angle. Blue shop towels on a roll are nice for prep without leaving lint like typical paper towels do.

It will be tough to get your hands on commercial film at dealer pricing until you register a business entity and setup direct. That said, I tinted for about 5 years before setting up an account to purchase SunTek direct. There are websites that sell tint rolls online. To get started, I’d recommend shopping Avery Dennison tint through MetroRestyling.com. Pricing is fairly reasonable and the film isn’t too bad to work with. I have used it before but don’t know how it will compare to other lines like SunTek, 3M, Llumar, SolarGard, etc long term. It will help you get going though!

@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas 2 года назад
I definitely prefer to pull panels, especially on Ford trucks as the bottom gasket on the inside is much lower than the outside so you’ll want to cut long. Feeding into the bottom first has been my preference but some may not. Hope it goes well for you!

Someone may have already asked this question and if so I apologize but do you use just straight water in your spray bottle or a water soap mix?
@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas Месяц назад
It’s a soap mix. There are products available for tint installation but I and many others use Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. The amount is tricky, there are some recommended mix ratio if you did a search to get you started, but it seems each installer varies by preference. As a beginner, it’s better to add a little extra to the water as it will provide a bit more forgiveness and ability to adjust the tint into place easier.

I make sure to spray my had first so it’s wet and then pinch the very back edge of the film with one hand, the second hand is on the dry surface of the tint completely clear of the area that touches the glass. That back edge of the tint my finger touches will be tucked inside the gasket of the door frame so if by chance some trash does remain it’s in a spot that’s not visible.

Why no heat shrinking trucks windows?
@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas 2 года назад
When installing film using a two stage method, it’s ideal to do a quick preshrink on the bottom to assist with managing film behind gasket. In my preference, I pull the door panel back and remove the gasket to bottom load the film first when installing. With that gasket out of the way, I ensure the bottom of the tint is dry and flat to the glass by heating on the inside after squeegee. This I feel compensates the difference of not shrinking on the outside first. Great channel by the way, looks like you’re sharing a lot of helpful tips.

Is this the same process for a 09 Chevy Silverado ext cab? And when you applied the tint how did you tuck that first side ?
@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas 2 года назад
Hey. Yes, the Chevy will use the same process and be easier without the curved bottom edge Ford has. The entry into the first side is placing the bottom down into the door and then sliding the tint down and forward into the front edge gasket. By sliding that side in further than necessary it will allow the back side of the film to lay on the glass and slide down into the door as well. Then once the film has been slid down enough for the top to clear the door frame it can then lay to the glass. Now you can align the top edge evenly and doing so should self center the film between the gaskets. Does that help?

The preshrink is a good practice to assist when installing without removing door panel or gasket. It will shape the film to the glass profile, minimizing any bubbles that could be stubborn to work with while tucking in. For me, I’m more comfortable with bottom loading first with the gasket out of the way and heating after to dry out the moisture completely on the inside before placing gasket back on. Thanks for your video it was very informative 👍🏼 My rookie question for you is - It seemed like very little heat shrinking was done and wasn’t even done on the outside of the car like I’ve seen on so many videos.. was it because the glass is so flat that you didn’t really have to heat shrink it too much? I do see you heat shrunk the outside edges to make sure everything held down.
@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas 10 месяцев назад
Hey, thanks! For many installers who 2 stage install, it’s more beneficial to pre shrink outside. For me, and others who prefer bottom load, it’s an option to heat inside since the gasket it’s pulled and out of the way of the bottom edge. The 2 stage install leaves the gasket against the glass and therefore makes that final heat inside an issue. Hope that helps.

@@TunersCanvas sun tek films are good stuff what what line do you use or like from them? how much does a roll of it cost? do they still send sample rolls?

@@makosharkcnc7730 Not sure if they’re still doing samples but I’ve asked for them in the past. I started with Standard Pro, which is pretty good, but am now using Carbon and Ceramic.

You don’t need to pull the full panel off. Roll the top of the panel back and you can pull the sweep right out of it and slide it back in when you’re done.

Interesting. Definitely seems viable on some but I don’t foresee this applicable on all panel configurations. Thanks for the tip.

Can we wash our car the same day after windows tinted?
@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas Год назад
Sure can! Exterior wash is no concern at all. Just give it a few days before wiping the inside of the windows.

How did you start? What made you start?
@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas 2 года назад
How I got started is working at a car dealership in a market that did not have a window tint shop. Any time a guest purchasing a vehicle wanted tint, we had to arrange with shops 35 miles away and it was challenging at times. With an obvious demand in the area I decided I’ll be the one to supply so I started watching videos to understand the concept and ordered the recommended materials. In the beginning I offered coworkers, friends, and family free tint in exchange for practice knowing that if there were flaws it was no cost to them. Slowly started getting comfortable and asking for little money and increased pricing as quality and speed improved. Word of mouth spreads fast and I’ve done over 200 vehicles as a side gig.

For some reason nobody exsplains how you keep comming up short on the bottom cut
@TunersCanvas

I briefly touched on wide bottom cuts to get below gasket. Did your question get answered or was I not detailed enough during that step? Fords in particular are common for deep inside gaskets and therefore have room for a much wider cut than visible from outside.

Ah yes, audio guys love when the tint guys uses so much water it ruins door speakers.... have you ever thought about taping a small sheet of plastic over the door?
@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas Год назад
I can appreciate the risk of potential long term impacts from the moisture used during tint installs. Fortunately in the years I’ve been doing it I haven’t had any immediate electrical concerns as a result of the install. Currently, not shown in the video, I have a large microfiber towel that I am laying over the pulled door panel. That doesn’t address the moisture from the glass itself though.

@@TunersCanvas don’t feel bad man I don’t happen unless they cut their speaker wires or they tampered with it in someway… what do you think happens when moisture builds up.. I’m guessing this guy didn’t do his if he’s on your page.. just like I am I’m trying to find better results because I keep getting bubbles 😂😂😂❤
@TunersCanvas
@TunersCanvas Год назад
@@stevendoyle5768 Absolutely. Its not a major concern as long as there is a sensible amount of moisture used. Where do you tend to get your bubbles? Are they air bubbles or more like specs under the films from dust or debris?
