There is a "catch" of doing this. All the desktop/documents/appdata aplications won't work after renaming your user name. U have to manually rename your old username in all apps/programs via regedit and it will take a long time. This method is good when u don't have apps/programs or u have a fresh windows 10 install.
hello guys; short question i tried to rename my userfolder from olive to oliver i did it via the admin account and i changed the path aswell in regedit but when i tried to log back on my normal account i lost all my games or other programs and i dont know why looked at the user folder and there was two no folder olive oliver than i deleted the olive cause it was empty and than i reboot pc in hope it will fix it but after that there was a oliver and a temp.desktop folder and the path in regedit was the u/temp.desktop..... folder can someone help me to fix it
Wow thank you very much Andy. Gone through a whole lots of other videos but were much too complicated until I found yours. God bless you and thanks again.
Dude, you were the only one that worked, I looked for videos from my country with my own language, videos in English and all of them were always the same and I couldn't change the name of the folder, I had problems because the oculus apps of virtual reality don't accept names with spaces so I had to change it, if it wasn't for you I would never be able to install and play with my VR on the pc.
Thank You SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS !!! Have struggled for hours on a complicated install with the issue being a space in the user directory name. This has been addressed and now I can continue with the regular scheduled insanity. 😂🤣😂 Wish you had a tutorial on what I am attempting to install. Lol. I believe it would not be near as complicated. Thanks again. I am subscribing and recommending this channel to some family and friends.
Just a clarification - i understand you also need to change every instance of C:\users\Andrew in the registry to Andy, not just in the profilelist. Sure that will change the folder name, but any installed programs by your name before you changed may give you problems.
When I am logging in as administrator and renaming it, it says "can't rename folder is open in another program". However, it's not open. Any idea how to solve this issue?
Had the same issue. Restarting my machine and logging into the Administrator account ONLY fixed the issue. You should be able to then rename the folder.
This works great! One item I stumbled into.... The video leaves out that once you execute the first step and rename the username, windows may not allow you to use the admin account to rename the files.? If you get a " cannot rename because files are open" error open task manager and select the users tab and disconnect to close the files on the username with the error message. Then close task manager and try again. It will work perfectly!
What about my data and programs? Would it remain untouched and working? Because my user folder name has a special character "ž" in it and that breaks multiple programs.
I figured it out, all you need to do is rename the older folder to the same folder as your new one, it asked me a couple of questions to move files around and worked
This won’t work for me. Created two acc but when i try to change the name of the original acc, it says it can’t make changes because something is opened somewhere but nothing is open
Hi Andy, just want to drop a big THANKS. It's funny, but this little user folder thing has been bothering me for a while. My OCD didn't like having a different profile and user folder name, and I actually did not know how to change it without screwing my profile. Very nice little trick :)
Not working, i get the folder in use error: the action can't be a completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program Two options will show, cancel and try again
I can't delete the new Admin account that has been made from using Powershell. Would this be as some as typing the same powershell line, but typing no for active rather than yes?

I lost all my files after doing this... now nothing is opening ... it says class not registered everytime i try to open something ... what to do now ??
hello! after entering the net command, it says access denied. is there something wrong with it? but i managed to change my user name. thank you. great help 👍🏻
I just got a new pc and was unable to log into it unless I signed into Microsoft. I think with that info, my PC was automatically named to the first 5 letters of my email. I didn't like this at all. But this video helped me change that, thanks a lot!
That's _exactly_ what happened with my new PC. Now, instead of my real name which I've always had on every computer, my user name is first because that's the first 5 letters of my email. FFS, the system doesn't even _ask_ what name you would like to use. I'm hesitant to start fiddling around in the registry, it's taken me days to set this computer up with all necessary settings and programs.
@@12thDecember This video honestly fixed the problem for me, but at the end of the day it's up to you. I just hate looking at the first 5 letters of my email (which was my real name) everywhere. There is some weird bug though, where a folder with the original name keeps popping up in *C:\Users\*, but it only has empty Bandicam folders in it because I Bandicam occasionally. Other than that I don't think it's ever used
@@vAngelx Thanks. I'm glad you were able to fix your user name. I just am not up to dealing with the registry with everything else that's going on with setting up this computer as a work station. Microsoft just makes everything harder and more obscure with every version release.
now start menu not working , gives me "your start menu isn't working. we'll try to fix it the next time after user folder rename you sign in" tried to rename back the folder but still the same ..
Hey Andrew, thanks for help, it worked for me but when I move to my account, is shows me- "C:\Users\*old name*\onedrive\Desktop is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you’re connected to the network or Internet, and then try again. If the location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted" What to do?
@Tondonba laishram Right click on desktop, click on manage one drive, then it will sync the desktop and issue will be resolved (Be connected to internet) Worked for me
Hey man, I want to change the name of the user that is linked to your Microsoft account. I followed the process in this video and it did work but I had to reset the PC and it changed back to the default user name that is linked to my Microsoft account. Any ideas on how to change that?
I followed the same procedure but when I signed out and tried to login with my new user name the window asking for the password. I haven't used any password. Please tell me what to do next which password it is asking for?
I followed instructions on this video, logged back in and all of my pictures and videos and applications thst were not on my external hard drive are gone. Please help.
My pc aint logging properly soo ye now not good and im gonna just reset my whole f pc bc i dont know how to get all back soo i think its easier that way
I cant change the name on users. It says "The action cant be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program" I already turned off all the applications and i already signed out the other user im using
Ok never mind my first comment, I deleted it. I thought i lost some of my files turns out i just meed to restart it. The name is changed and bot a single thing missing. Thank you
Τhanks for the video. After disabling the Administrator with the command: net user administrator /active:no, I still can see the folder Administrator in Users. Can I delete it (without harm) or hide it?
Deleting the folder manually is likely to cause problems. You can use a tool like Delprof2 ( helgeklein.com/free-tools/delprof2-user-profile-deletion-tool/ ) to remove it safely, but I'd be inclined to just leave it there.
