I thought this was a great video breaking down the different versions of Windows 10 and their strengths in functionality. This video helped me tie up some loose ends of uncertainty in an infrastructure upgrade I will be conducting in the next two weeks. Cheers!

Most people need encryption, and BitLocker is a great reason to get the Pro version. Some people - mostly devs - need virtualization, though, so for them that's another reason to get Pro. Most peeps don't need Active Directory, though (Win Enterprise), unless you're into systems serious management. But if you're the latter, you probably already have a ton of licenses.
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow Год назад
A limited version of BitLocker is in the Home edition under the name "device encryption" and enabled by default on hardware that meets its requirements. These days with Windows 11 requiring a TPM it means pretty much all new devices will have BitLocker enabled out of the box. You need the Pro edition or above to have any real measure of control over it, but I think most home users wouldn't understand or care to learn about the options anyway, so "enabled by default" is a sensible approach. I just wished MS provided some kind of notification at first logon to make sure people backed up their recovery keys. As it stands, the first time most people hear about BitLocker is when they get locked out of their own device!

Honestly I think most people will need ReFS, even though it's only for Win 10 Enterprise. I'm in my 40's myself and already some of my older files have degraded due to "bit rot". The nerdy alternative is to go through old disks and generate CRC codes and hashes for each file manually (it can be automated), and then also generate an extra file with parity bits, which can later be used for error correction with your old files. Simply replicating your files over several hard drives is another and perhaps easier solution. So sure, it's possible to DIY, but the simplest solution for most people is to just keep a extra copy somewhere.

Thanks! If "best" is simply the version with the most features, and we ignore cost, then Enterprise is best as it includes everything in Home and Pro, plus more. Although whether you can actually find a practical use for those features outside of a business context is another question!

VM's isn't a dealbreaker for a muggle. As a dev, I use it _a lot_ though, and it's really indispensable. But BitLocker is a really great addition for both muggles and devs. You can secure your USB files with it, which is indispensable. Most homes or enthusiasts won't neeed Active Directory, though. If you want to create a fancy network at home, honestly, just get some Linux distro instead. Almost any will do the job better than Windows.

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC is the best for performance while having the features of going Enterprise.. but good luck getting a license legally though if you're using it on an individual PC. I have a moderately powerful PC and I can't fathom the huge performance difference when switching from Home to LTSC.. it runs faster and hey no bloat.. I was a Windows Insider so I would constantly hurriedly install new updates because I was obsessed with getting new features. A few years later I realized those 'feature updates' aren't worth it if it means your PC is going to randomly restart, crash and get a blue/green screen ever other day or so.. I have been using LTSC for some time now and so far NO software issues and compatibility issues with my hardware even auxillary ones have come up.
@zOOmer991
@zOOmer991 3 года назад
Has software compatibility been an issue for you? LTSC came out in 2019 right?
@mediocritycentral
@mediocritycentral 3 года назад
@@zOOmer991 Every program I have on my PCs running LTSC runs and installs just fine like it would on Home/Pro. The performance you get in LTSC is night and day, and I can see why gamers prefer it. Though it's hard and expensive to acquire a license legally (going yo ho-ho pirate is fine if you're comfortable with that 😉). The way LTSC works is that it gets a version "update" every 2-3 years. Every new version incorporates the UI changes and feature additions of the current version of Home/Pro (so you won't get future new features and looks/UI changes in future versions released in Home/Pro within those 2-3 years. You'd have to wait for the next LTSC version but it's a fine compromise for speed and stability). As long as it's within 5-10 years (I'll explain why there's a range) from its original release date, you'll continue to get security updates and software bug patches. LTSC is fast as heck because it doesn't have the unnecessary bloat that Home/Pro has. It has NONE of the cr*p Microsoft puts like ads and games like Candy Crush in the start menu and extra processes that would compensate for them making Windows 10 essentially free. LTSC is used on systems like hospital and military systems where instability, bugs, and slowdowns CANNOT be tolerated (imagine if a patient died just because a Windows 10 system had a blue screen or if a military system had a glitch and fired their arms arbitrarily). The latest version is LTSC 2019 released in November 2018. Before that was 2016 released in August 2016. The next LTSC release is expected to release in October 2021 so I advise you to just wait. In Feb 2021, Microsoft made changes to the 10 years of security updates support present on LTSC. For Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC they now slashed it to 5 years but they also introduced a new flavor of LTSC which is Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC IoT that retains that 10 years support. After asking around the internet and communicating with various Microsoft agents, I have come to find out that the IoT one is completely identical to the non-IoT LTSC one, just that it's meant to be installed on IoT devices (as if the editions weren't confusing enough). I hope this all helped :) sorry if it was too long

@@mediocritycentral Hey, thank you very much for your comprehensive answer! It helped for sure, I just have one more question, If I "get" the 2019 version now, would I be able to upgrade to the one releasing in October this year, or would that have to be a fresh install. I'm getting a new machine soon, which is why I ask. Thanks again!
@mediocritycentral
@mediocritycentral 3 года назад
@@zOOmer991 Nope. You'd have to fresh install it because it's a separate operating system, not like Windows 7's Service Packs 1-3 or the upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1

@@mediocritycentral Ah I see. Is the two year update worth the fresh install in your opinion? Will you do it, since you've used the 2019 for two years I assume? 128 quarts would be possible with the threadruptor lineup to terabytes of ram that's probably 4 to $6,000 right there if it's all running at 3600 MHz. The CPU itself probably going to be at least 2,000 or more. And if you're going to have that type of system you're probably going to have the latest and greatest graphics card so that can be up to $10,000. And if you're going that high might as well get the best motherboard that's over $1,000 so you're probably looking at up to a $20,000 PC

Pretty sure it's illegal to use home adition for business use.
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 4 года назад
No, I don't think it's illegal at all. The EULA calls out specific versions that cannot be used for commercial activities, but Home edition isn't on that list. If you're a one-man-band, Home edition may even make sense. Beyond that it's a bad idea because of its lack of management, centralised authentication, etc. but it's not breaking the law. Office is a different matter, though. M365 Personal/Family and O2019 Home & Student are explicitly not for commercial use.

Difference between the free windows 10 and windows 10 home?
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 3 года назад
Windows 10 Home exists. 😁 You might get Windows 10 preinstalled on a device, but there is no free version - you are either paying when you buy the device or you're paying when you buy a key. You can download the installation media and install it for free - it's the licence you pay for, not the download. You can run it without a licence and it will just disable the odd feature and give you a watermark, but it's not really allowed... they'd just rather nag you and keep you on their ecosystem rather than hunt you down and chase you over to Apple/Linux. As a home user it's very unlikely MS will come after you for doing that, but a business... eventually they will.

My thing says its windows 10 enterprise but i still need a product key. Which kind of product key do I need to purchase
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 3 года назад
I would guess that if you were somewhere that could legitimately purchase Enterprise you'd have someone taking care of this for you, so likely you've ended up with the wrong version installed by accident. As you're unlikely to be able to (legitimately) buy an Enterprise key, you're probably after Home or Pro (this video should help you decide which). Whilst it's easy to upgrade from a lower version to a higher version, downgrading is not as well supported, which possibly puts you in an awkward position having the top-tier Enterprise installed. You can run the following command to see what versions are supported "DISM /Online /Get-TargetEditions". You should be able to switch to any of the listed editions using a valid key. If that doesn't work or you want a version that isn't listed, then the only officially supported method is to reinstall Windows using the correct version that matches your key. Some people have reported success by changing a few registry keys and tricking Windows to do an in-place upgrade to a different version. I'll link a video to it, but be aware it isn't supported so you do it at your own risk. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VTjLd57QgDY.html

Most likely the normal Pro version. Workstation is very niche. Unless you're got a very special use case that needs extremely high performance and more hardware than you can fit in a normal computer, there's not a lot of reason to pay the extra for the Workstation version.

If it's just you then even Home should be fine, unless any of the features I mentioned in Pro are important to you. The main limitation with Home is that you can't manage it any kind of scale. If you need to make a change or install an update, you need to sit down and do it manually on each computer. If you only have one computer that doesn't matter, but if you grow to have an office full that would very quickly become a waste of your time.

You can find instructions here. It requires certain hardware (specifically, a TPM). If your device doesnt have that, the option may not be available. support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4028713/windows-10-turn-on-device-encryption If your device doesn't support it you could use a third party utility like VeraCrypt, but the user experience won't be as slick and transparent without the TPM and baked-in support.

That seems... dodgy... Even businesses don't buy a computer with Enterprise. They buy a computer with Pro and they buy Enterprise volume licences separately to upgrade it. They might give the supplier their own Enterprise image to apply in the factory, but you can't just buy a computer with Enterprise from the Dell website for example.

Enterprise doesn't perform differently to Home or Pro, unless you have an extreme amount of hardware (in which case Enterprise is better). Seeing as you can't legitimately buy Enterprise as a home user, I'd guess you have a company device and they cheaped out on the hardware spec.

I made a video about it but the summary is that until vendors support it properly there are just too many compatibility issues that get in the way of me being able to use it seriously.

@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 2 года назад
Arch for the average user? I'd love to have your users! 😂 The experience of anyone working in the IT field is typically that the average user can barely reboot their computer without assistance! 🙈 A lot of the compatibility issues I've experienced are around MS software, which is probably not a surprise. LibreOffice corrupted MS documents (OnlyOffice fares better at this) and some MS applications simply don't have Linux counterparts. If I existed in an isolated bubble I could choose alternatives but most of the rest of the world uses MS apps and convincing everyone else to change their computers to suit me is not viable. I'm left with the fact these items work on Windows, work on Mac, but don't work on Linux. Maybe one day MS will support it, but until then it's not a lot of use to me as a daily driver. The other major problem was driver support on my laptop. The Windows audio driver uses psychoacoustics to trick the brain into hearing more frequencies than the hardware can physically generate. Impressive, but proprietary; and there is no Linux support so it sounds really awful. I tried Linux on my editing computer as well and whilst all of my editing software will work on Linux it wasn't a great experience. I had to dig through a lot of old video drivers to get support for the right OpenCL implementation and my workflow became far more convoluted as I needed to transcode everything into intermediate codecs due to licensing issues that meant none of my media could be read properly under Linux. Overall, that's the issue - I could buy new hardware and put in place a whole bunch of workarounds, and if I _had_ to make it work under Linux I could make it workable enough... but when the Windows experience is much better straight out of the box there isn't any incentive for me to do so.
