I believe the bottleneck on the Windows installer is storage, not CPU, so it being multi-threaded probably wouldn't help matters much.

FWIW; I installed this on a VM with 6 cores on a Ryzen 3700X and a virtual drive on an Samsung 970 NVMe, it literally took less than 2 minutes to install.

Well, they claim it is a new feature, but it was already there way back in Windows 3.1, if not before that. It just got temporarily disabled in Windows 95 and NT 3.5(?) onwards, and IIRC I think it was temporarily enabled again in Windows 7.

Where do you think all these open-source guys work in the daytime and get their actual income from? Also let's not forget that companies are probably the biggest contributors to the real meat and bones of Linux.

There's plenty of linux distros that use a shit ton of ram too, and depending on how you build arch or gentoo it can also use a shit ton of ram. Ram use in an OS isnt an indicator of anything, stop being corny

@@sunburst8810 Yeah but with Linux if you really want to you can install this "bloated" os and then run commands to delete the DE and install something lighter. If you don't want the mess and trouble you can just use a different distro or spin. With Windows? There's no other DE and you can't modify anything, both practically and legally. @@sunburst8810 also, if you have let's assume limited resources because of low budget and plan to run several heavy things at once, every byte of RAM will count. Learned this the hard way during online school when teacher asked us to to run 2 windows and 1 win server vms simultaneously while ALSO using Teams. my classmates who were all using windows struggled with ram being at it's limit (I'm not even talking about these who had 4gb of ram total, just these with 8gb) while I somehow managed to run them nicely on my Linux (and I'm not even that obsessed with lightweight DEs... I use Cinnamon) and by adjusting everything correctly I somehow managed to do the tasks he gave us. Before you ask yes this teacher is very mean sometimes and he doesn't care about it. Again, the lack of option or alternatives is the problem with windows.

I bought a new laptop the other day and it "came with windows 11" (it actually came with windows 10 but would install windows 11 when you go through the initial configuration) and once I got it up and running, I noticed it didn't have Microsoft store installed with it. It didn't have that or any of the stuff that works with/uses it. It also was unstable at first, so I did a reset using local recovery files and the next try was stable, BUT also didn't come with windows store. I checked everything related to the store and nada, no windows store settings either (it wasn't just hidden either, you couldn't just run a reset command or tool and it come back, it just didn't exist as part of the OS). I decided to poke around a bit and see if it was just a fluke, but nope. I thought it was interesting because the store and all the other crap that comes with it is so embedded into the OS that I was surprised it came from the factory that way and from what I've read, you can't really make it optional without breaking things, nor can you reinstall it if it's missing (there'sa command for that but it didn't work)... although I don't know how true that is because I've never cared enough about it to look into getting or removing windows store. Anyway, I could probably create a recovery media from those files and have a fully functioning, windows store-less version of windows 11. Might test that out and see.

Forced updates so i get to actually CHOOSE exactly which updates i want to install, and no need for any 3rd party apps to remove anything? Decisions decisions.
