Firefox is meant to be Chrome competitor. If Firefox came with enhanced extra security settings enabled it would cause some inconveniences/changes mainstream user is not used to. It's not an fault at all. If you have any concerns about security, it honestly won't take long to turn Firefox into really robust private browser.

Nothing against, I loved the video, but I was just thinking something: By faking your user agent to the most commonly used browser (Chrome Latest version on Windows 10) you are literally contributing to the argument: "Well most of the internet is chromium/chrome anyway so lets just stop supporting firefox entirely on our website, or leave it to far third place, after safari" Because you are contributing to that usage % of chrome throughout the internet and sites you visit. Its sad, but we should embrace the firefox user agent, to keep its world usage % relevant. I know a lot of people that use firefox, so it's kinda shocking seeing it so low on worldwide % usage. Maybe a of of FF users are just obcessed with security and are faking their user agent? 🤔

@@gl3nda96 I was actually speaking seriously. The web and sites like Google or Facebook that literally follow you around the web with their adsense and whatever, save which browser you are visiting X website with, as additional statistics. And then they share these statistics with the world, and other big websites that specialize on ranking stuff like gs.statcounter.com and others actually use this data to rank the top used browsers throughout the web. So yes, by faking your user agent to be a chrome browser, you are actually contributing to the monopoly of chrome, which is now with 66%, instead of helping Firefox grow its importance and market share, which has been slowly going down and is now at around 3%. If you wanna help firefox continue to get noticed in the web developer community (i'm a web developer btw and I love firefox thats why i'm saying this), don't change your user agent. Instead even do the opposite, if you user chrome, change its user agent to be Firefox. Developers usually stop caring about supporting a browser if it goes bellow 1% market share.
@azenyr
@azenyr 3 года назад
@@gl3nda96 I'm a brand new Full-Stack Web Developer, just got my course & certificate done 4 months ago, still junior 😅 So anyway thanks for the clarification, I always thought that everything was measured through user agent statistics from google adsense and whatever. Now, I'm gonna be honest with you: I've used firefox since I can remember, because I loved its extensions. After they changed to web extensions or whatever they are called, the extension catalog got really smaller, but still awesome. The real problem however, is that Firefox lately is just using so much CPU and RAM, i've tested on dozens of computers from everyone I know because I refuse to believe that Firefox is just eating more CPU and RAM than chrome. But it seems that it is. Open the same tabs with the exact same extensions on chrome and firefox, let them settle and Firefox will eat 2-3x more ram and also slightly more CPU constantly. Been happening for a lot of versions now, I've tried on my macbook, i've tried on my desktop with windows & linux (ubuntu 20.10), it's the same everywhere. I'm really hoping that firefox fixes this. Because yea, I love firefox because I hate that google dominates the internet. But for now, on my mac I always use safari (and it's just unbelievably smooth on the new macOS 11), and on windows i've been using the new Edge which is really nice actually. On linux, I still use Firefox, and it seems that on linux is where it performs the best. I'm gonna keep paying attention to it tho, and when finally it gets lighter again, i'll switch everything back to firefox without even blinking. ... That, or... Chromium-based browsers just know how to better hide ram usage using a lot of multi-processes lol
@sarditime132
@sarditime132 3 года назад
This can be circumvented by just changing your user agent to the most common Firefox one. You would be more fingerprintable than with a Chrome user agent, but it shouldn't be detrimental, and it's considerably better than telling websites you're a linux user on Firefox. Linux users are much easier to fingerprint
@newyearsproject
@newyearsproject 2 года назад
@@sarditime132 wouldn't a Firefox user with a Chrome user agent be way more fingerprintable than just a Firefox user? you're gonna be the only person on the internet with a browser that behaves in fingerprinter feature tests like Firefox but claims to be Chrome. plus you're going to have to keep updating your useragent to the latest Chrome version or be uniquely out of date.

The issue with spoofing user agent in your config is that it's going to quickly become outdated and you'll standout just as much. The issue with doing it with an extension is that firefox has a major issue, which to my knowledge still hasn't been fixed, where only one extension at a time can modify an outgoing request and if you have multiple extensions doing that, which extension can apply its changes is basically determined by a race condition so very inconsistant.
@_modiX

So it needs an extension that can do all that requires you to be private when it comes to HTTP requests and it needs to be able to fetch the latest version user agent of your browser choice, automatically.

I realize this is an old vid. Maybe someone will see this comment idk. I'm just wondering how is adopting Firefox a win? Ok, great it doesn't use Chromium. And it's produced by a nonprofit instead of Google. On the other hand, I find it suspicious that they aggressively bundle Pocket (a commercial service) by default, and force users to go on a research expedition and click through a scary warning to disable it. Is this really the behavior of a trustworthy, user-first organization? And why should disabling tracking and telemetry be so complex and difficult it requires a third party config tool? Maybe there's a privacy argument that isn't obvious to me. But at this point it seems like Chromium and Gecko seem equally hostile. But maybe I'm overlooking something. I'll pass. I have my own methods. When installing Firefox I usually start by using one of these two approaches: 1. Copy one of my existing profile folders into "profiles", then alter "profiles.ini" to point to that. This synchs *_everything_* , including bookmarks, settings (incl settings customized via "about:config"), passwords, credit cards, about two dozen add-ons, etc, etc, etc. 2. Import selected items via Firefox-Synch (built-in to Firefox), with synch settings set to "everything but settings and add-ons". This approach will grab bookmarks, passwords, and credit cards, but not settings, themes, or add-ons; those have to be done manually. This is for when I want a Firefox installation that differs substantially from my others, for some special purpose. Generally, the four most-important add-ons I always install on *_every_* Firefox installation are these: 1. Ad-Block-Plus (blocks nearly all ads) 2. NoScript (allows fine-grained control over which JS scripts are allowed to run, and I always disallow scripts that send data to Google or Facebook or push ads). 3. NewTabTools (replaces Firefox's ugly, useless, cluttered, garbage-filled NewTab with a clean grid which one can use to launch two dozen or so (depending on how you configure it) most-used web sites) 4. ContainterTabs (segregates cookies to prevent the web sites one visits from committing corporate collusion via cross-site cookies, which, believe me, many sites (especially Flacebrook and Gaggle!!!) do a LOT) So I'm afraid my existing procedures already go way beyond anything done by the "Firefox Profile Maker" site mentioned in this video. About 30 minutes after I install Firefox on any computer, it bears little resemblance to raw Firefox. I never use raw Firefox, any more than I would dump some raw, uncooked, unseasoned meat and veggies on a plate and call it a "meal". No, it's just raw ingredients; takes a half hour of work to make a meal out of it. Same with Firefox. That being said, interesting and informative video, and I think the less-tech-savvy of your viewers will find it an easy way to improve their Firefox.

I used this to make a new profile to test out, and honestly im disappointed. The about:config settings are largely unaffected it seems and the autoplay blocking still requires manual disabling in the configs, pocket was still showing on the homepage, and a few other things make this slightly annoying. I still have to go into the config and do my usual work to get the browser to not piss me off. I find myself using chromium browsers more and more due to this, seeing as how FF keeps making itself worse per update imo.

If you fake your UA to be a popular browser, after that browser is updated it will become rare. And as someone else has said that makes FF even lower in stats. HTTPS everywhere is obsolete since FF has a built in feature that does the same, doesn't it? It's enabled by default I think. You deleting the files wouldn't work on Windows because the files would be open.

"Not the best defaults". LOL. Perhaps the understatement of the year. I've been using FF for a long time, but I'm about to dump it. Why? The feature set is actually quite good, but the performance sucks. Don't know why FF always generates a high CPU load on my Debian linux systems. The Mozilla folks of course are in complete denial: "Oh no, can't reproduce it here, must be your system". Ok, then why don't the other browsers exhibit this behavior? Crickets. And I've tried everything: disabling add-ons, safe mode, disabling defaults - nothing helps. I'm not the only one having this problem which seems to have been around for a while yet there are no answers that fix this issue once and for all for everyone that experiences it. Like for any piece of software that malfunctions at some point a fix should be available. At a minimum the Mozilla folks should be more helpful. In the absence of these two FF is just degenerating into abandonware.
