World would be a better place if all apps and games developers were building and testing their products on Wine instead of Windows. That could maximize the potential market. Let's get started.
I use Play on Linux, because I can never get Lutris to work right and Cross Over grabs all the resources to itself, and failed to get the program at the time running. Play on Linux has worked for everything so far, but you have given me two more to look at, thanks.
You could mention Gallium Nine which improves performance of dx9 games on Linux with mesa drivers. It's mainly for legacy GPU without vulkan support, but still.
Wow, I remember the last video on this and a lot really has changed since then. I don't remember seeing development progress this rapidly before. Maybe the day when we can liberate all the gamers from the shackles of Windows will be here sooner than later!
Will never happen in the short, or medium term. Even Apple with significantly more market share than linux desktop is missing many games. Until Linux's market share significantly increases, you will be stuck with having to do work arounds with Wine or lutris or proton or whatever; and then there will always be efforts from some manufacturers to incorporate DRM that can't be easily bypassed with WINE or other similar programs. What I want from linux is not WINE; I want native support. That's the holy grail.
Great video! One thing I'd like to learn more is this "Proton wine builds (-tkg, -GE, official or others) are not suited for use outside of Steam, even if the option is provided by some third party tools. Doing so can break the whole way they are designed to work and thus is NOT recommended." I've used proton in Lutris and it seems to be working fine but according to TKG I shouldn't. Maybe make a video explaining why we shouldn't use Proton in Lutris?
So Chris, THANK YOU for your content. I WAS a Mint guy, just a new Linux user- your videos have shown me the vastness that is Linux... I recently switched to KDE Neon and... WOW. I HOPE that my newfound love of the customization doesn’t take me down the Arch road, or other distros that you can customize TOTALLY, but need a ton more knowledge. My question today: can YOU pls do video(s) on KDE Neon? For the intermediate user, like a lot of your followers, offers MUCH. it’s not a newbie stock flavor... and you can customize in SOME ways of the barebones distros that hardcore users like. Please cover neon. Or, plasma/KDE in general. I vote KDE Neon tho. Can that be put into the mix?
I'm about to move to Linux and I'm watching a ton of your videos about all the Linux OS', but I haven't spotted any SteamOS video from you. I know you always recommend PopOS and Mint, but why never SteamOS? I did google a little the other day, and I think I found like 5 or more websites that list that OS as the best for gaming, but never actually found any reason why. Most that I've read was that everyone just chooses that one nowadays. Do you have any opinion about SteamOS or none at all? Thank you in advance, and thank you in general for making such good videos.
i like ur job, ur videos, etc, etc ... this one just made me a bit confused, I'm sorry .. am Linux user for many years, and one thing I've learnt is , do not install anything into Linux about Windows ... coz viruses, malware , etc... and that's not an issue which version of wine i do use ... simply, it is prohibited for me to allow some Win/Linux APP to have any access in my Linux installation! Maybe I am wrong ... anyway, I thank you :)
That ?used? to be the mantra for Wine, but I never hear anybody say that anymore these days (in RU-vid videos). These days I'm assuming that the apps running in Wine are now sandboxed, or people prefer the ability to run games in Linux over the safety of their Linux installs.
noticed an elgato streamdeck behind you... did you get that running on Linux and if so will you make a guide? Hope you have a great day & Safe Travels!
If you're on arch based distro, you can install proton-ge-custom-bin from aur For installing binary of glorious eggroll version of proton It'll automatically appear in steam You should also check out boxtron(available on aur) it's an awesome tool to run steam does games It's much better than running them in proton
Hi Chris, thanks as always for making these very informative videos and a Windows user who has made the transition to Linux (I use Zorin 15 Core as my daily driver) you really encourage me to continuing to learn more about Linux and I spread the greatness of Linux to my friends and family. A member of my family is actually sick of Windows 10 and wants to change but won't until Facebook Games Room can run on it. I have followed a tutorial on the internet to do this however it doesn't work. Is there anyway you or anyone in the comments section can assist me? I would greatly appreciate it. Keep going, thanks for your channel, your content is marvellous!
Hi Chris! I'm completely new to Linux, been using Windows my whole life. I want to ask whether I will be able to play EA Sports NHL 99 on Linux and with the help of Wine or Proton? I've read a few articles that retro Windows games from the 90's actually run on distributions like Lite, Puppy or Ubuntu. Any advice is much appreciated!
Has there been any recent talk in the Linux community over how to handle anti-cheat coding on gaming in Linux? Edit: I really hate the auto correct feature of my phone (aka fixing typos).
I've been wanting to know what Windows games will work with Wine, but the WineDB page is outdated with a number pf games not getting enough testers or any at all.
Just to say I lost a couple of mins trying to shift a mark on my screen that was (eventually) found to be a mark on your wall (or camera!) above the 100k subs plaque :)
to all noob. In winecfg u should put some kind of libraries for software or game that you want to use. If you don't know what kind of libraries for it, you can check in winehq website
Wow I never new they were other custom version of wine and proton I usually would just use the staging version if something didn't work and I absolutely love Lutris cause of how easy it is to use and how much stuff they have on there that isn't just for games for example I use Fusion 360 for 3D modeling since it's simple and easy to use but I could never get to work on Linux then I found out about Lutris and saw that they had a installer script for Fusion what to me months to try and get working but ultimately failing Lutris got up and running for me in a matter of minutes I just love how the Linux community is constantly getting better and more frequently now if only I can get Davinci resolve working on my laptop with Pop_OS and find a way to not get banned from games that use easy anti cheat it will be more difficult to keep my Windows partition and PC
Could you tell me how Wine is? Can it run most games well without much headache? And would it run fine in my Intel UHD 620? I'm concerned about the performance difference being too great
#ChrisTitusTech What Linux Distro are you running in this video? Sorry if you already explained it in the beginning but I have really bad short term memory. Also I'm still watching it right now and don't feel like rewinding it.
I wish it worked just as well for regular apps. Only think I can't replace is Adobe Animate because we use it on school (we also use Visual Studio on school but that thing sucks so bad that I can't even imagine touching. Geany FTW). I've tried to run the installer but all it did was displaying a blank window.
Whenever I hear _any_ RU-vid say that the cynic in me thinks they are just saying that for CYA reasons, in case the script in their video is bad, they can say "I told you to check it before running, I didn't say it was safe to run!" Truth is you need to know how to program scripts to be able to check them for safety, it's not a thing a newbie can do on their own. You need to be a programmer/scripter.
@@CosmicCleric I suspected that because Chris is usually a little more informative about how to do things like that. I guess other than checking it in a VM you are always running a script at your own risk.
@@rastamouse7861 Actually wasn't pointing to Chris directly, but I haven't seen _any_ RU-vid videos that run a script in them where the content creator doesn't says something along the lines of check the script yourself before running, a general CYA thing.
@@CosmicCleric No, neither was I. I was just using that as an example of what I typically see. I guess it is CYA but normally Chris would mention that he put a tutorial down in his discription or something about a cool app that will check scripts for us newbs. But I am really just trying to learn more about scripts ultimately.
@@rastamouse7861 He didn't do that in this video though, but I get your point. Edit: To be fair he did run the script on camera, so he basically became the guinea pig for us viewers.
I am really pissed Chris, I have had to go back to Windows because Linux can't handle multi monitor gaming. In Windows you can have each monitor separate and configure on its own and you can't do that in Linux. Are you able to help with that so I can ditch it and go back to Manjaro or is it simply not possible? BTW I have one center monitor 49" 3840x1080 and 2 side monitors 1920x1080 so 4K in other words.
@@motoryzen In flight sims no the one monitor is not enough, field of view is everything especially for a flight simmer. It gives much better peripheral vision which is important for knowing where you are in 3d space. There are also other options for doing that and I will likely employ them too but it makes it a whole lot better.
Hi Chris. Is it possible to install Windows Xp apps via Wine? I tried to install Age Of Empires and says it can only run on Xp. Is that any kind of compatibility mode?
For DOS games I've been using regular DOSBox and DOSBox-X. Both work fine, but the second one is more comfortable to use with menus on the top like a typical emulator. The most 'advanced' games I was running were those classic FPS games like Doom, Hexen, Shadow Warrior etc. When it comes to emulation of retro stuff Linux has the best software that works without any problems.
Chris Sir, I was trying to launch a game called Cricket 19 from my Zorin OS (based on Ubuntu 18.04) laptop in steam proton. But, I only got a message stating that:- No compatible graphics device found. Minimum DirectX 11 graphics device is required!. I tried lot of things, but nothing seems to work. Can you Please help me out.
@@Destide Thanks for an answer. Yes, I know that it is not one of the popular games, so it will be tough to get support for it. I am from India, and here the craze for Cricket is unbelievable, This is one of the rare cricket games that is there for PC, and it is the best and most polished cricket game out there.
I am a Computer Information Systems major at my college, my professor has said before that in between the time it took her to walk from upstairs to down the thing that she was looking at had changed and she had to relearn what was going on with it.
@@mariuscretu4060 Do you have source code? If so and it is well written, it can take just a recompile with different settings. But then is the question if there is not a way to compile it for Linux directly. If it is bad written, has a lot of assembly or is optimized a lot and needs that optimizations (like games) then it is hard. If you don't have the source code you can try emulate it but that is very slow.
I compiled Megaglest (Warcraft III - like open source strategy) on a Raspberry Pi 4, and it ran just fine, but the developers already prepared a pre-made bash script which installs all the dependencies for you.
@@seansollars70 Hmm, thought dotnet35 was part of this. Here you have what I meant snapcraft.io/search?q=Dotnet This might also help you maybe github.com/Winetricks/winetricks/issues/703.
Hey Chis ! Could really use your linux gaming knowhow to get something going. Trying to get MK11 to run. Still borked under Proton, but I found this guide detailing how to get it going with Lutris software.kaminata.net/linux-wine-games/mortal-kombat-11-linux-dxvk-wine/ followed to a tee, just won't work for me. One thing I thought about was that the person in the video was using NVIDIA and I have an all AMD system (R5 3600/5700, Arch, latest mesa drivers) Any help would be awesome, yeah I could boot into Windows in a few seconds, but where's the fun in that? lol
WINEhq site has list of how well various windows software work, many times with tips/howto make it work Theres also ProtonDB for win games & Steam/Proton
I keep Linux on a dedicated SSD but still find myself creeping back to Windoze 10. I'm well versed in Linux, but still not really feeling it unless I'm programming, other than that, meh.
Yeah, that's the thing. If your dual booting you will never really get into the "other" system. When I started with Linux I found myself constantly booting into Windows. But my goal was to learn Linux, because I was tired of all the lockdown in Windows. And after about a month I really enjoyed using Linux. Now when I'm sometimes forced to do something in Windows ( at work ), I don't see why I had such a hard time switching over.
@@Zandman26 You are absolutely right! The lockdown is what's killing me on Windows. I can't seem to make up my mind what distro to actually stick with. I feel like I've tried almost every Linux distro there is, however, Mint and Ubuntu are the two I use the most. I know......Ubuntu........lol. I'll admit it, I boot into Linux mostly for Citra since OpenGL drivers for AMD work better on the platform. I have got to have me some Zelda: A Link Between Worlds after a long 12 hour shift. ;) ;)
If it doesn't work in WINE, all I know is just create a Windows VM and run it only when you need that program. If that's the only thing you use Windows for it makes more sense than dual booting, assuming you're able to pass through any specialized drawing hardware.
JRiver is proprietary, but it does work on Linux just fine and is arguably better than both foobar2000 and MPC. Technically it is superior, but I never got used to the UI. There are native Linux builds, no WINE required.
@@OsmarMty I just got used to a custom skinned foobar2000 and MPC for video. I bought JRiver but have hardly used it as I mostly stream video these days and mostly listen to music on my phone.
