I'm somewhat surprised you didn't touch up on why the registry makes the PC slower over time as you install and install programs, or just daily using some programs that abuse the registry. And no mention of why Microsoft's move to UWP (Universal Windows Platform) for app/applications is important going forward. So, while Linux pointed out that the registry does indeed make it easy for some apps to 'talk' to each other, there are some software that just abuses the registry for more then just leaving settings in there, some will load up the registry with masses of amounts of data that has to be loaded and managed regardless every time your PC starts up. Or when you uninstall a program the uninstaller doesn't know what additional registry settings were added while you were using the program and just leaves them there. Some programs such as Microsoft's own Visual Studio make use of the registry so much, that it increases the registry size by over 50MB just from installation, with the majority of them not being cleaned up after an uninstall. Microsoft's move to UWP allows developers to lock in a registry to their own app instance, so any registry changes are kept with the program, only loaded with the program, and completely removed with the program. This helps keep the system a lot cleaner and faster over time, with less need to use cleaners. The registry is probably the number one thing that 'slows' down a PC over time, and why fresh installs of Windows feel faster.

Ccleaner is actually a decent program! I use it myself along with Advanced System Care from IOBit
@TheDavidlloydjones
@TheDavidlloydjones 7 лет назад
I bought IOBit for a year -- but didn't renew because it's so totally irritating. Almost every time I used it I was subjected to a blizzard of commercial puffery, long windy interruptions about how the version I had spent good money on was not the *real powerful* IOBit, and I should send them another twenty or thirty dollars for the real thing. On one occasion they subjected me to a totally bogus "You have a problem, let us search it out. We can fix it for $20" false routine. I phoned them, got a silly girl who told me a bunch of lies first and then an urbane Indian who refunded my money right away, i.e. right away after the half hour wasted to get as far as him. The whole thing had the appearance of a cost-of-doing-business payment: this guy's job was to be nice to the certain percentage of victims who didn't put up with being victims. Having him on payroll was their overhead to get all the other suckers' money. Buyer beware.
@DTronicsUK
@DTronicsUK 7 лет назад
be carful with system care pro, i use it and it does have a little bit of adware (nothing more than a free antivirus would have such as AVG) other than that i agree it is a great free program to use, and IOBIT have released some other great tools as well including a windows 10 setting tweak (like the windows 10 no phone home tool) the uninstaller tool is another great program, allows you to batch uninstall multiple programs, and if it cant uninstall it via the programs uninstaller it will try to brute force uninstall it, then after it runs what they call "powerful uninstaller" which looks for any file left over on both your hard drive and registry and removes those sometime needing a system restart to finish removing
@skilz8098
@skilz8098 6 лет назад
A few years back in the area of Windows XP - Vista I did use both CCleaner and programs from IOBit; but in truth they are not all they are cracked up to be. I learned over time if you're not too lazy that self managing your system is the best way to keep it running smooth and fast!

Other changes people can do in the registry; * Change / reset timers and other expiries stored in registry * Delete / Modify persistent program settings normally inaccessible by conventional means * Make available other features normally handled by GPEdit on home systems For some users tho long to have some older Windows feature, the registry can be a place to enable these features. Also, for more dubious purposes... you're on your own, but you know what to search for. ;)

This was a great introduction! I would love seeing you give even more details on registry editing, maybe you wanna do a "Top 10 most useful registry edits"? I have no doubt it will be amazing because you are so excellent at understanding UX issues and so I'm sure you have in mind every little detail that you would want to fix in Windows. So dig into those Google searches for the best ideas... I found this reg edit that lets you change the icon of of the different drives, so I put a picture of the HDD and SSD and a diagram of RAID0... I thought it was pretty and kind of smart ass thing... Btw I say that you are so excellent at UX because I saw your video of upgrading the iMac... You were so amazing at picking up every single detail about the differences between mac and Windows... You even found a couple of things I never notice but I agreed with everything it was so much fun watching! Love you and thanks!

Good general intro to this subject. I found myself editing this bugger time and again for corporate users. Been so long, I can't even remember the specifics. I loved taken the "sledge hammer" approach and deleting whole sections within particular branches. Amazingly enough, sometimes they'd rebuild themselves. Other times I was merely manually removing residual from uninstalled programs.

The problem with the registry is that although it allows for customization it is painful to navigate and not particularly user-friendly. Microsoft should make it easier to work with the registry graphically; - for example, customizing the context menus, what comes up when you go to the "New" menu by right-clicking etc.That would be awesome.
@0M9H4X_Neckbeard

+Sina Madani that's what the windows 10 settings app is for, it is meant to unify more settings in one app instead of scattering them around the OS or hide them in the registry

INI files are really usefull for development because of the portability they provide. Imagine a program that is designed to run on different machines (by for example a usb stick), you can’t let them run by registery entries, it would break the portability. Also, sometimes ini files are usefull for webdev, for example, php makes smart and plentifull use of ini files.

@xdarrenx
@xdarrenx 8 лет назад
I've used CCleaner for a decade or so, and it most definitely makes things snappy again for me. With snappy I mean 5% increase or so, and overall a bit more responsive. Whoever thinks it increases by 9000% or some shit is just.. uninformed.. It usually only needs to be done once every few months or so, depending on how much I've done, but it does help. It's mostly a lot of cache cleaning, and registry edits not so much, but they do pop up enough for me personally. I can often trace back the registry points it wants to clean to software I don't have/use anymore. I can definitely recommend.

+Jon Spoonamore You may wish to do more research - It's actually a filesystem in a disk image file, to be perfectly accurate - except that it was half assed. It's corrupt right from the get go on a Windows system now days. As for how terrible it is - I completely agree.
@jonspoonamore3721
@jonspoonamore3721 8 лет назад
+Kenton B Actually... I have not done this since the Windows 95 days... You can copy the registry file and rename the extension to .mdb It will open as an Access database. At the time, Access was a major database player in the PC market. As usual... Microsoft took the path of least-resistance to fix issues they needed fixing. Behold.... The Registry-File was born from Access!!! If the registry file is now mountable file-system, the problem has gotten way worse than I thought!!!! I split from Windows, ages ago, to the Linux community. Long live Text Configuration Files!!! And... The ability to Install software/upgrades without needing to reboot a 1,000+ times!!!!

In the registry Win 10 1803 and older was such a parameter-HibernateEnabled. Starting with version 1809 it was renamed HibernateEnabled Default. If you use the powercfg command to disable hibernation.exe /hibernate off in cmd. Then The hibernateenabled parameter will be recreated in the system in parallel with the new HibernateEnabled Default. Which causes problems with shutting down, and probably with sleeping due to duplication and most likely conflicting policies and rules.

+ProrokC2 Most driver discs actually are a standard CD size. I think I've only ever seen one that was a mini disc. But many hardware manufacturers don't even include a disc at all anymore, they'll just send you to the website where you can download the latest driver, if the generic Windows one isn't good enough.

+ProrokC2 Drivers for a single program usually are very small in file size, manufacturing a regular size CD is wasted money. However, DRIVERS for a motheboard are regular size.

The registry is a scary and unpredictable thing that I won't ever touch again. I had a virus on one of my old computers and I used an anti-virus program to brute-force remove it from my computer and it ended up deleting a bunch of stuff from my registry. Next time I turned it on, all sorts of stuff broke and weird things started to happen. Every time I would log into steam I would have to wait for the connection to fail and then manually log in. Battle.Net completely broke and I was unable to update it entirely, same goes for razer synapse. Eventually I got so fed up that I tried to reformat my computer and even that wouldn't work. I was unable to update my computer so that I could remove the updates and erase everything. It was a complete mess. So no, the registry is no joke. If you start messing around with files you aren't sure about it can cause some incredibly strange issues.

@motoryzen
@motoryzen 8 лет назад
+Kolbe Howard Been there, did that, got the t shirt, and it didn't fit correctly. So from that moment onward..I Started making System Image Backups at least once weekly to one drive, then manually backups of my data ( and whatever else COULD be manually backed up), twice weekly to a separate drive. I encountered a similar virus again ( albeit it was my own fault as I was testing the resistance of IE versus chrome to allow malware into my pc ). Tried the system image restoration. The virus seemed gone. For 3 more weeks straight, flawless system performance. Then I tried to test chrome versus IE versus Firefox in the same contest context. Got a different kind of virus that acted like Ransom Ware, but oddly didn't always lock me out of my desktop ( weird eh?). For that situation, system image restoration did nothing. I had to " Custom" install Windows from the beginning and manually reinstall all my programs.
@Daddimon

+Kolbe Howard Were you using Norton? Sounds like a crap anti-virus to me, even if it did make changes to the registry, any reputable software would advise you to make backups or at least a restore point.

Proverbial Potato I don't remember. It was that shitty FBI "go to the nearest atm" virus that kept popping up whenever I logged in. I was trying to get rid of it for hours and just got frustrated. I downloaded some super sketchy "registry cleaner" software and that's what did it. In retrospect obviously it was retarded for me to do that but this was years ago and I wasn't thinking clearly.

I recently upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10 and it was a flawless transition. However i did have a few minor issues. My external hard drives, i have connected via USB were sleeping after 5 mins of the drives being idle. This didn't happen in Windows 7 and i found the issue to be annoying. So i spent some time going through all the settings, power scheme settings etc and in the end, i had to edit the registry to resolve the issue and it worked.

I'd rather have a 'cryptic' error message that tells me exactly what happened. Something like "Error 53. File 'ImportantFile.log' cannot be found. Click OK to terminate the program." is useful, not cryptic. It specifies what the problem is. What I really hate are the modern, condescending, patronizing error messages like "Whoops! Something went wrong there and we need to close down." ... Firstly, that's not constructive in any way, and secondly, any programmer who uses the word "whoops" in their error messages needs to change jobs to a children's TV show presenter. Even the new Windows setup starts off by saying "Hi". It's just cringe worthy. What the hell are Microsoft playing at recently? They used to make really well designed, professional, work oriented software. Now it's like they're trying to make everything usable for idiots.

You can enable verbose dialog on Windows startup in Windows 7. I don't know about 8 or 10 though. It's in the group policy under the interactive logon settings. But still, I do agree about Windows being more informative about exactly what is happening.

Sorry, I looked into it, and I gave you the wrong path. (Hey, I run a domain with over 50 GPO's. I'm bound to get them confused!) Open GPEdit and browse to 'Computer configuration\policies\Administrative templates\System\' You may see an entry called 'Verbose vs normal status messages" Set this setting to enabled. Now instead of showing "Welcome" for the whole duration of logon, you will see messages like "Applying user settings", "Applying printer policy", "Applying folder redirection policy", etc... Now you know where it is, you can create a GPO and tell it to run on all client computers. I suggest enabling it on all of your servers too. I think you could also do it from the local policy editor, if for any reason, you're not running a domain.

+TheFilledk A free open source operating system thats driven by the community, main creator is Linus Torvalds (a long with others of course), it runs famous operating system Android. It dominates the server market right now and is based off UNIX, it is not that great for desktop use because it is not populated (it controls 2% of desktop market now) therefore applications are not supported such as Microsoft Office, Games, powerful editing tools etc. Linux is good for programmers as it gives them tools for programming that Windows simply can't offer. Mac OSX is also based off UNIX like Linux so programmers can utilise the tools on Linux using a Mac while still giving the full application support like MS Office, games etc. Hence the term "Macs just work". It's a god send for us programmers. There are many Linux operating systems that range from super easy to use like Ubuntu or Mint, to extremely hard to use such as Arch, Gentoo or LFS. Its extremely customisable however if you want to tweak you should have some sorta tech savvy love in you. You're welcome :)
