A great video i owned a Auto glass shop for over 15 years hated the chopping windshields and I deal with alot of custum cars classics and theres so many different ways people use but i have a rotozip and love it im definitely going to try your way u just cut alot of glass to get the center and it worked i see these guys cut with there hand held glass cutter and man they get it on the first shot my luck it takes 4 windshields i have a chopped 50 chevy business cpe that had a 52 olds 1 piece shield cut done beautifully since the early 90s and 2 little 12 year old girls i caught on camera throwing rocks at my car broke the shield parents have no money thats my car in the picture so im going thru trying to get her back together thanks for that great video
The Roto zip I used is a 30,000 RPM. You can find the diamond bits at Lowes Home improvement stores in the Roto Zip section. I saw it there for around $40. Pete
first time ive seen this method, been around since the early 50s but something new always gets my attention. in the early 60s in california my brother and at least one other in the same area used sand blasting, tape off what you want to use and slowly with fine grit sand blast away the rest. i can't remember ever seeing one crack, i also saw the mark and burn method, thats my words, never asked what the guys doing it called it. mark the line with glass cutter kinda like you did with tape, and pour lighter fluid, or whatever you have handy that burns hotter, into the crack/line, and light it up, might have to do it a few times and i did see lots of glass broken using this method. thanks for posting this, im a little too old to make use of it but im sure you helped quite a few with this video.
Hello there. I used a set up simalar to this one last week to cut down a shield for a 59 Star Chief. I wen with the round nose 60 grit with a 1/4 inch shank. I dont remember the art number right now but I will get it and get back to you with it Monday. And by the way, we should be posting a video of this work by the end of next week. And one other item. CR Lawrence also has sanding belts avalible for a multitude of hand held sanders and i strongly suggest going this route to finish the edge. Just keep the belt wet while you work. 80 grit is great to start with. Finish with 120 or 180 grit.
For the life of me, I cannot find a diamond tip routing bit with the diamond coating that is deep enough to cut the windshield of my 1967 ford mustang. Most of the coatings I'm finding only cover about 1/4th to 1/2 inch depth.
Pete, as my comment below states I cut the windshield will no issues. The only thing I noticed was that it had little "chips" all the way around and after using the scotchbrite rotary pad it smoothed the rough edges but did not remove all together. Everyone knows a chip is basically the begining of a crack & on an offroad vehicle this is (was) not good. CRACK first time out! Seen the belt sander method. Good/Bad? Should I sand until ALL signs of chips gone? Would the 1/8" bit be better 1/4"? JG
Talked with a BFD sandcar builders that use Leroy at Allstar Glass somewhere down toward San Diego. Maybe he can give some input as I know of two cars that have windshields cut by him with no issues for some time now. JG
