Great video! This looks like such a simple, no fuss way to make grapefruit wine. I like that you can just primary ferment in a bottle rather than starting with a bucket.

That’s who I love using these bottles of juice! It’s so simple and easy to do!

@@SustainableDan I tried this grapefruit wine and it came out better than I expected. It wasn't overly tart or too sweet. I'm going to try a batch with fresh grapefruit juice now.

Brilliant! This might be my second wine! 🎉

I did another batch after this one where I added more grapefruit juice after I racked it and when back-sweetening. I think that definitely helped maintain the juicy grapefruit flavor all the way to the end.

I recommend using your sanitizing solution in the air lock. Or using vodka. Since the water in the air lock is exposed to air it could grow bacteria and yeast that may get sucked back into the vessel if anything goes wrong

To save a little time on the shaking of the jug, you can heat up your water on the stove and dissolve the sugar in it before adding it to your carboy. Of course you're going to want to sanitize your cooking utensils first. After sugar is dissolved in the water, let it cool down a bit before mixing all your ingredients.

I have tried a few different methods involving hot water. Great idea!

This is great! Would you be able to make a video of the stabilizing process?? Also shoukd this be stored in the refrigerator or just out in a cool dark place?? Thank you!!!

I will definitely go into more depth about the rest of the process. I would store it between 65-72F. Honestly I’ve had it ferment fine at cooler temperatures, but that a good range to aim for. You want to keep it away from too much light as well. Sometimes I keep them under a desk.

No one has ever heard of Grapefruit Wine except in the song FM by Steely Dan. Sadly for most people who take prescription medication and even some over the counter medications that any derivative of grapefruit could increase or decrease the potency of medication. Trust me I’m heartbroken over this fact. But for those who can indulge, enjoy it because it’s a part of the history of good classic rock

Good Stuff Dan! Whats your favorite wine yeast?

I mostly use Red Star Premier Blanc, but I’ve been trying to branch out and use Premier Classique. I have not gone wrong with Red Star yet.

Could you skip adding sugar and just let is end up very low alcohol or is the natural sugar levels of the fruit just not enough to really do anything at all?
@SustainableDan
@SustainableDan Год назад
You do not need to add sugar, but you would want to use 100% juice with no added water. If it ends up below 5% abv, it won’t stay good for too long.
@SustainableDan
@SustainableDan Год назад
Honestly making a carbonated grapefruit drink at 5% abv sounds pretty incredible.

@SustainableDan I know right. I love drinking the juice and keep imagining a grapefruit version of apple cider, it'd be great. But I don't know the best way to achieve it. I don't know if the flavours would carry over, if it has enough sugar on this own, if you could use exact same process as Apple cider etc

I've noticed in a couple of your recipes you use significantly less juice per gallon than some other channels. Have you experimented with different ratios? I'm pretty new to this and made a gallon of concord wine, 100 percent grape juice. It was pretty terrible, super strong foxy notes. I just started a grapefruit cider and after watching this video I'm hoping it doesn't end up like the grape juice (strong unpleasant flavors)
@SustainableDan
@SustainableDan Год назад
So I use 1 gallon of juice and no water for my ciders. It never seems like my ciders are more flavorful or that my wines seem watery. It also depends on how strong the juice flavor is. Lemon juice vs apple juice for instance. I use 1 qt of juice for every wine recipe and they turn out great.
@SustainableDan
@SustainableDan Год назад
You could probably do every wine recipe 1 qt of juice, 1.5 lbs of sugar and 1/4 tsp of yeast and turn out fine. If the flavor is weak after fermentation, I backsweeten with a bit more juice after I stabilize it.

What was your starting PH 🤔
@SustainableDan
@SustainableDan 10 месяцев назад
I have yet to dive into the world of PH in winemaking, but I’ll be getting a meter over the holidays. I do know that grapefruit juice is usually 2.9 to 3.3 and after dilution would have moved a little less than 3 points so maybe 3.2 to 3.6?
@ReapingTheHarvest

That was a buttload of sugar. How was it?
@SustainableDan
@SustainableDan Год назад
It seems like a lot, but it’s pretty standard. It turned out great! This is one of my favorite wines to make. Technically, the more juice you use, the less sugar you need to add.

what type of sugar is best for yeast to eat ?
@SustainableDan
@SustainableDan Год назад
Regular sugar works great. Sugar substitutes generally will not ferment. Honey is also a great source of sugar. I try to use raw cane sugar.
