This video is a snippet of one of the many videos of Grandmaster Chu's teachings that's available in the Mindful Wing Chun Online School. Here, CST is discussing the seemingly simple concept of being able to control and move different joints and areas of the body individually yet simultaneously.
In his teachings, he always talked about and demonstrated the remarkable control that one is able to gain internally over the skeleton. Joint Expansion and Rotation leads to great power generation and is attainable by everyone who puts in the correct practice of Siu Nim Tao and then applies that control in the more advance forms, and ultimately under incoming pressure.
The human body and mind has great untapped potential as we see in examples such as a mother lifting up a car when her child is stuck underneath. And what's great is that this type of body (and mind) control is usable in all movements once it's learnt through the correct practice of the Wing Chun Forms, so it is useful for people of all ages, backgrounds, fitness levels and different movement goals...

Wonderfully explained, one can clearly see the effect of "interconnectedness", how energy flows through the relaxed body from the ground by internal force. PS: wait, just listening to the last bit with the wheeled board, is there footage of it? It's hard for me to even imagine the scenario, like you said, where does the force go? Was Chu Shong Tin withstanding it and just so good in deflecting it perpendicular into the ground? I mean, I understand one can put ones weight behind punching if not connected to the ground, but if you can push 70 kg over the floor with friction, you should be able to move the same weight if the friction is reduced by wheels ... 🤔 Very much interested, I think I could learn something beyond my horizon here

Hi Rick, Yeah it was unbelievable to witness him on the wheeled board. I haven't found anything with him on it but there were some with him setting up some of the women standing on it.. They arent able to take on too much force that's why I didn't put them online. If and when I can get my hands on the footage of him on there Ill definitely post it up.

so let me see if I understood correctly: 1- each joint rotates individual and in accordance to their axle 2- each joint rotates when necessary and not in a random 1 then 2 then 3 3- when your opponent is not able to direct their force (no stable ground to do so) is like pushing into water it becomes useless now questions: could you draw or point out on a picture which points of the body are to be relaxed? Buttocks and lower back, Shoulders, neck and ... Also in Jujitsu and wrestling as I experienced when you relax your body for example if I am a 100 kg my opponent would think I am much heavier and much much harder to handle and he has to use way more power. I thank you for the information I will consider all these info into my daily practice thank you again for sharing. Wishing you health and happiness
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 3 года назад
Hi Hamid. ALL area of the body should be aimed to be relaxed. Evey joint. Again relaxation doesn't mean mindless or sloppy relaxed and the joints and muscles are still 'active' but not tense. And yes, once you mobilize mass correctly you will be able to produce more mass than the actual static weight of the object. I.e. a bag of cement that is 20kgs will weight much more than 20kgs if its falling from a rooftop.

Did CST speak openly of "rounding" the hips or "hiding" the line? I feel CST did this naturally, but outwardly, it's very important. So, as an exercise, "soften" your arms & let an opponent "push" or thrust. When the hips are stiff, the opponent will eventually find the stiffness & line & force us backward. Force cannot be applied without resistance. Instead, "soften" & "round" the hips after softening the arms. Done properly, we can absorb & return energy via the hips [with wedging]. THIS is why Ip Man kept saying "softer", "gentler". Focus over force; energy over movement. Learn to "hide" our line & cross, defeat the "line" of our attacker. CST intrinsically possessed such a high level of Wing Chun that it was difficult to express. Use every joint equally rather than one. This is the key to effortless power. Great video as always!
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 3 года назад
He didn't use the term rounding but certainly said we gotta relax all joints and hips are a very important one to be able to access and involve the lower half of the body
@hiddenpathwingchun5045
@hiddenpathwingchun5045 3 года назад
@@MindfulWingChun CST did it naturally; his stance was always so perfect. The hips should be "soft", but we're also "rounding" energy and returning it like ball. The pelvic tilt is "effortlessness". The "rounding" is the absorption and softness upon contact which will "feed back". This "idea" significantly strengthens stance [along with "sinking" etc]. Hips absorb much like shoulders. I like to picture it as a wave coming and returning. It's more of an intention, but definitely discernible if used or not used. When someone with Wing Chun training is pushed back, it is often by finding the tightness in the hips. One who rounds properly tends to "absorb" and "stick" to the floor while upending their opponent. You probably can feel "center" and the gear-box of the hips on contact. Focus on this and play with the idea. Touch hands with only softness on the hands and if they push enough you'll be moved or displaced. But if we add softness and energy rounding to the hips it will actually "cement" our stance making it very hard to move.

When Master Chu Shon Tin demonstrate the joint control, can he resist different type of forces like twist and bend? Like other Martial Arts where they do Joint lock and manipulation.
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 7 месяцев назад
Yes, once the joints are 'open' in the way that we are talking about, its not easy to apply things like Aikido locks or 'Chin-na' to the joints.

I haven't found one of him doing it but there is one with his son Horace doing it when he's been set up by CST, but the person isn't pushing too hard on him so I haven't posted it. Hopefully someone has footage of CST doing it. Maybe its somewhere in my 1.3tbs of footage 😅 Just need the time to go through it all one by one

@@darkhorse888 Never heard of that one. I think its made up 😅 But a couple of us can hold the pole in front of us with fully extended arms and use a slight wrist movement to lift it up. thats what he was able to do in his youth with the heaviest pole in his school (I still can't do it with the heaviest one yet)

Honestly, just focus on Nima's online courses. Wing Chun destroys boxing [if understood]. I say this as I had to fight a golden gloves boxer on the street in New York City. I broke both his hands in less than a second. His four friends decided not to engage after initial contact. Learn to understand "lines of force" [most realized by the Wooden Dummy form]. Once you do understand and are able to "accept" force [and use arms or lines to feed your force back to their "center", then you'll find you can win upon contact. Position permits opportunity; balance allows response. Take both at every moment. Humility is greater than pride. For pride destroys wisdom.

@@MindfulWingChun Wasn't a great experience getting jumped. I later realized the military "friend" I had gone with to NYC was setting me up for these sorts of fights. Boxers use hand-wraps and don't harden their fists or use proper structure much of the time [trusting the glove]. He was a southpaw. I showed my chin and baited the right jab [let my bong elbow and guard hand break his wrist], he then went for the cross, but I just lowered my forehead. The rest of his "friends" decided not to engage. I was young and dumb and didn't read the signs. Better to have not put myself in that position. I had the spidey-sense tingling but was not street smart at the time.
