If you have watched this channel for any amount of time, you'll know that we talk a lot about Bruce Lee. It's for good reason though. Martial arts as a whole has existed for thousands of years, a truly unique yet deadly symbol of culture, class, and warfare. But, when Bruce Lee came along in the mid 1900s, he singlehandedly shook the very foundations of martial arts. By combining philosophy with physics, he demonstrated that by not restricting yourself to a certain art or style, you could become a much more efficient fighter. It was the birth of Jeet Kune do.

I started boxing in my teens. Then, I studied Jun Fan Gung FU/JKD for about 6 years. I thought the art was great for basic self-defense and general awareness. But once I started to study Wing Chun, there was a stark difference in my growth, control, and power. JKD appeared to be more "athletic," but the things I've been able to accomplish with understanding the forms, proper stance, and relaxation found in Wing Chun, have been incredible.

JKD applies the more efficient and applicable aspects of Wing Chun along with the aspects of other arts. A caveat is to be careful of getting a false sense of security when seeking to practice Wing Chun. The movies have done a disservice to Wing Chun by sensationalizing the art as a fantasy-like fighting style. The reality is much different. But it doesn't hurt to learn the art and to be realistic about the outcome of applying it in certain situations.

Jeet Kune do is very different than Wing Chun. Although Bruce started in Wing Chun and other Kung Fu systems and had experience in boxing etc he pretty much moved away from most of the trapping before his death. Trapping and other things like locking etc was to be thought of as either incidental or accidental, the main purpose is always to be more simple and direct and hit the person's intention before he can react, everything else was just supplementary. Jeet Kune do is a principal based art, simple direct, non-classical, no limitation as limitation and encompasses all ranges of combat having no way as way, pretty much being a jack of all trades with idea of using the fundamental principles like the five ways of attack, which isn't in just one particular system but just encompasses the art of fighting. Bruce got rid of the forms and was looking for aliveness or realness sparring etc in training.
@catitonavarro
@catitonavarro 2 года назад
@Adam A. I don't disagree with you. I still teach it as well but like I was saying it's more incidental or accidental. I believe it has its place and it should be trained the sensitivity and everything that goes with it is important for many things like locking, clinch etc. I still do a lot of energy drills and trapping drills but we always make sure that we use resistance training or sparring /aliveness so people learn how to use it in a more realistic setting.

you are right, it must also be clarified that Bruce Lee defined jeet kune do as a simplification of his fighting system because many of his disciples did not progress by learning Jun Fan Gong Fu. It could be said that Bruce Lee practiced dozens of martial arts, but he only taught Jeet Kune Do, which was a simple practical summary to transmit to his students. And that he also passed away before finishing teaching. Now there are many crazy people who believe that for having learned jeet kune do in a gym they are like Bruce Lee hahaha. Jeet Kune Do also is a Bruce´s philosophy based on taoism concepts
@N0B0DY_SP3C14L
@N0B0DY_SP3C14L 2 года назад
Something that is not mentioned is that unlike Jeet Kun Do, Wing Qun was designed to CONSERVE and quickly rebuild one's energy so that if necessary, one can endure through as many opponents as necessary, and as many at the same time as necessary. As the number of opponents rises, Jeet Kun Do's probability of survival drops. Also, while it sounds nice and flexible on paper, trying to develop your own style will always leave you with blind spots. Wing Qun has those knowledge gaps filled with a far deeper and more refined lineage, when adhered to. Food for thought.

There's a few moves in wing Chun I learned, monkey hug, praying mantis embrace. Both are locking on to the opponents body, monkey hug is with legs and arms, wrap opponent and maintain till opponents diaphragm remains still, then lock. Praying mantis embrace, you lock legs around opponent torso, then use elbows, the elbows breaks fingers and fist when opponents try to defend, then use hand chi technique to pierce opponents eyes..

Master Leung Bik instructed Ip Man and told him that although the core principles of Wing Chun are speed and leg support they do not prohibit changes. A principle Master Lee obviously took to heart when created Jeet Kune Do. I believe Jeet Kune Do is a natural progression of Wing Chun. While some Wing Chun purists may not approve of what Master Lee did.. I believe Jeet Kune Do honors its Wing Chun roots and I believe Master Ip Man would have approved of the style.

Studying JKD and WC since the 70's and practicing it most of my adult life I agree with some of what you said. However, it is ESSENTIAL to realize that a critical point of JKD is that you do NOT have to sacrifice power for speed or vice versa. This makes sense since the energy transferred is a squared function of the speed (e.g. 1/2 mv^2), and the damaging third order differential of velocity and beyond ("jerk" and "snap" "crackle" and "pop") are higher order functions of the acceleration of the acceleration and beyond. The transfer of that velocity based power is all about aligning the body's mass behind it, and doing so fluidly and as quickly as possible. Again, speed/velocity is the key variable. The more quickly and completely you can relax the opposing muscle groups for the benefit of speed and resulting power transfer, the more speed and resultant power you can transfer. While this is fundamental/basic stuff, I have seen plenty of American sensei's completely miss this, and assert that speed and power are inversely related. That is simply wrong.

You can’t compare it like that. As Bruce Lee said, everyone needs to find his own way. And therefore, Jeet Kune Do is more like a style. In Ving Tsun, it’s quite similar. Look at the ways different students of Ip Man fought and you’ll see, there are a dozen of differents. I learned Ving Tsun from a lineage of Wong Shun Leung, but I practiced Leung Ting Wing Tsun before. Totally different, actually Leung Ting is less Ving Tsun and more…Eskrima. But that’s the point…which style do you compare? This is too generalized. Nice to watch, but not more than a bit of entertainment
@coreyoliver3653
@coreyoliver3653 3 года назад
I agree with and I appreciate the phases of your “non-comparison” observation. It appears that Jeet Kune Do would be better defined (better yet, observed) as a self (essence)-exploratory journey versus a “style (distinct manner)” that the practitioner either simply understands and appreciates, himself/herself - or doesn’t.
@tanjudermanl9111

There are so many different JKD styles out there, every student of Bruce Lee developed another way of JKD. The original style of the early Bruce Lee called "Jun Fan Do" is a totally different style from the later JKD of Bruce. But that's natural for JKD, because Bruce was changing, BTW it is the purpose and goal in JKD to continually changing and adding, to be different and to be individual. For example my style of JKD is from a Korean master GM Mikhail Kim and is very different from Bruce Lee's JKD, only the main principles are more or less the same. BTW there are also countless Wing Chun styles inside classical Wing Chun according to GMM Leung Ting's "Roots of Wing Chun" book. So comparison of JKD and Wing Chun is really difficult to master. Just to compare the core concepts and main strategies of the main styles of late Bruce Lee's JKD and the very classical Ving Tsun of Wong Shun Leung or WT from Leung Ting is not enough imo. The principles and core concepts of classical Wing Chun and JKD may seem very different at the first glance, but on the other hand there are also some similarities. So which style is better? I trained both styles over 15 years, first different styles of Wing Chun and then JKD; so to fully master JKD I suggest to start with Wing Chun (to a certain level) and go over to JKD. It is like building a lego city, you can build it up further and further and yes, it's compatible. Please don't try to imitate somebody including Bruce, be yourself, that's the goal of JKD. Thx for this awesome video guys, please more of it.

I trained traditional martial arts for many years achieving multiple black belts and instructorships in such arts as, Taekwondo, Judo, Combat Sambo, Kickboxing, Shaolin kung Fu, Muay Thai Boxing, Kali, but when I really started to understand JKD every time I sparred with fellow instructors from different arts I wiped the floor with them. I don't want to sound arrogant in that statement, simply knowing JKD properly makes all the difference. You know how to adapt, counter, and how to intercept correctly. You learn about such things as, timing, half-beat attacks, drawing, faking, feinting, gaining a beat of time, non-telegraphic technique, directness, strategy, cutting the man in half, triple blows, breaking rhythm, re-zoning, stealing a step, cutting in to the tool, etc, etc. Sorry folks but Wing Chun doesn't teach you that. However, like anything, you need a very good instructor to teach you how to do it right with all the right content matter that Sijo Lee developed prior to his untimely death.

I think Jeet Kune Do wins simply because of one particular principle. Pressure testing. Sparring and live combat drills are essential for any fighter to even remotely have a chance at survival and Bruce Lee couldn't stress this enough. After all how can you know what to do in a fight when you've never been in one before? Wing Chun purists have faltered time and time again to MMA fighters who have no restrictions on their style whatsoever. Even Bruce Lee himself lost a fight when he only knew Wing Chun. It wasn't until he won a boxing championship in Hong Kong where he finally began to develop himself as a true fighter.

To the question why Wing Chun is not used in UFC: In the end, this style offers only a few ways to win: stab into the eye, crash in the windpipe and strike the chin with the ellbow. Maybe add a knee strike to the crotch. Because you are so close to the enemy, you lack the distance (and power) to shoot off a winning kick or a strike with the fist that would be OK with UFC rules. Of course, the short distance also increases the risk of being grappled and thrown - with the MMA opponent surely winning on the ground.

In Jeet Kun Do defense , when an opponent steps forward, the first short kick to the forward knee of the attacker, of the JKD exponent is a Wing Chun kick. It is the one that is always used first in close quarters fighting, and therefore it is not exclusively part of JKD practice, but derived from WC. No-one is going to stand around waiting to be kicked by one of those huge JKD sidekicks, and once in the air they aren't changing direction. The fighter trying this is going to be caught out with a fast WC defensive counter measure. Wing Chun is always a defense attack move together, not one or the other. In that stupid scene in the roman Colosseum where Chuck Norris is standing there being kicked three times without using any defense to the same part of his body, which is complete rubbish. It would never have happened.

the one inch punch, isn't a bruce lee invention... but wing chun's... in fact all strikes in wing chun strive to be one inch strikes... which is pretty much using just your striking limbs to do 2 things, get your strike as close to your target as possible and get your limbs' structure set up to be able to deliver the full power of your body that the specific strike can muster... doing this will prevent your attacks from being powerful at their beginning, which allows you to recover quickly if your strike is blocked, parried, dodged or jammed early on, and keep your endurance up, after all moving an arm or a leg back into a defensive position on a failed attack is easier than moving your entire body. Then, if both conditions are met (close enough to target, structure in place), using the rest of your body to generate power for the attack.

I feel like Wing Chun practitioners & Jeet Kune Do practitioners need to work on their Ground Fighting game like cross train in Submission Wrestling. But if Jeet Kune Do practitioners could retrace Catch Wrestling then they might have a good advantage in their ground fighting but i think Submission Wrestling surpass Catch Wrestling but its my opinion. You should do a video of Combat Sambo vs. Jeet Kune Do.

It’s the other way round. I’m a jeet kune do and wing chun martial artist. I would say that jeet kune do is way faster and more powerful, more flexible. Wing chun is pretty fast and pretty powerful, it’s just limited with striking, footwork, grappling, kicks etc. Ultimately, the individual is the most important style no matter the style learnt. But IMO, jeet kune do is way better

Punch Six Inches inside your opponent’s body. Punch repeatedly and unrelentingly from a very short distance. Do not clench your hand until the moment of impact. If it feels good you are doing it right.

Wing chun is a defensive based art. Ip Man blocked kicks and punches using kicks. Jeet Kun Do added an offensive aspect to the defensive art. Jeet Kun Do is Wing Chun. IP Man knew this.Bruce knew this..for Kung Fu learning is Never stagnant. And if your Base learning is Wing Chun, u are a Wing Chun practitioner, adding your personal style to your base art.....but there are politics in everything. Bruce swayed away from "wing chun" because politically amoung the chinese he had to.Ip man also politically asked bruce to leave his dojo, but sent him to train with his #1 desciple.....look at images of Bruce hand to hand with IP man....the joy and smile on ip mans face is pure love. He knew his Wing Chun would live on thru Lee.

From what I saw there wasn't really much of stepping off the centerline in the video, so you leave your head exposed to attacks including if you're using both hands at once, you're also assuming your opponent is only throwing straight punches, martial arts history lesson, a lot of martial arts were designed to only take on the same style. In real life, if the average person tries to swat punches away what's going to end up most likely happening is you're going to get speared or tackled to the ground, then you're going to get ground and pounded or punched to a knockout. Royce Gracie took the world by storm because he incorporated something new just like Muay Thai and their devastating lower kicks. Also, they are trained to guard the side of their head with one hand as the other hand is giving the blow. Muay Thai Wins! I'm not at all stating both Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do are useless but as for practical against a fully resisting opponent who has steroid aggression and is about to beat your face in and or is about to stab you to death I just don't see either one being superior between the two just my opinion though.

hm Wing Chun isn't Characterized by blocks at all, because Wing Chun doesn't use a single block at all. Wing Chun use ONLY counterattacks instead of blocks. I learn Wing Chun for 7 years and i honestly never heard that any Wing Chun user, is using "blocks". The difference between blocks and wing chun counterattacks is simple. Blocks are made to stop an attack by blocking it with a Bodypart, against a Bodypart. like "| = block" "< = attack" "|

Again most people misinterpret wing chun they think because your are hitting so fast you are sacrificing power and that is not the case it’s not built off of just speed and actually bruce got hos one inch punch from wing chun not jeet June do as the one inch punch shows you the power in the smallest movement of wing chun and he knew about the one inch punch before he switched

Yeah it's my belief that Bruce Lee talked about is Jake window it was the most direct attack and the most fluent as in natural movement when he's talking about water he's talking about being formless and in this video it's really it's like you're comparing the wings are chunk what is it the Chung Wang style daughter barely defeating your opponent that's a style that's and Bruce Lee's equinox was wasn't an art form it was formless the strikes and that that he taught were just to help you to create your philosophy and how you move so Bruce Lee doesn't doesn't have a form really he has a he has philosophy that's what it is and as the kicks I think he only kicked below the waist until he did that movie with Chuck Norris the one where they're in the Roman coliseum then after that he started kicking above the waist I do believe but yeah I just thought I'd mention that that this video is a comparison of forms and Bruce Lee doesn't have a form you like water before be formless most natural and direct attack is the fastest not speed even he's just not he condolence not just on power he's on speed as well and that's from you know his teacher or whatever the philosophy that was right when he was young right when he started after you got beat up in that street fight.

I just want to throw some fact into this one of Ip Man students name Hoàng Thuần Lương(VietNamese styles of his name) he beat Bruce Lee by using Wint Chun and he is a skilled Boxer he only retired because he accidentally kill a eye of his training opponents soo if Ip Man vs Bruce Lee while both as they prime Ip Man would win considering he could beat his student Lương even after Lương is fully trained this is my theory

Prime Bruce Lee knew Wing Chun and a LOT of other styles, so he pretty much knew the possible moves he was gonna be up against and he had a bigger arsenal of moves to counter it, ofc Bruce lost fights in his life he wasnt born a master, but Prime Bruce Lee? he wasnt a master of only wing chun lol he was a master of almost everything he trained.
@testeurglandeur6609

They are useless if the person doesn't apply true intent in fighting, all these people sparing only do the moves but train to restrain their moves in order to not hurt their sparring partner, this put them at risk to do the same against a real opponent as it will become an automatic response. In truth, none of them has shown any practical use in mix martial fighting because of this and also because simpler boxing styles can just do the same and are less complex to use and learn. As they pointed out, speed doesn't cut it if there are no real connecting punches... I will wager for any average boxer against any master of this two martial art.
