I respect this MAN! He speaks realness . Muay Thai , Boxing, Mma if your a professional fighter . Your under a grueling regiment grinding. Up by 630 am running, pad work by noon, brutal sparring at night. No time for complaining just nitty gritty hard work. With some" Traditional Martial arts school nowadays it's became like a social club for privileged entitled whining men.

For you to say nowadays I have to ask when was this period when Wing Chun dominated other arts? They keep using Bruce as an example but we don't know how good he was, we didn't see him fight, almost everything is just hearsay from that era but if JKD and Wing Chun guys were dominating today it would be far more believable. It's just like the myth of Rickson Gracie being a great fighter and the best out of all the Gracie even though the few fights we see him in he looks mediocre, but the fact that the family do se well makes it slightly more believable.

Mr t. - ur an idiot. Video obviously wasn't ubiquitous and the sports infrastructure didn't exist so naturally you aren't going to be able to see like you do today. But clearly WC did exist as did countless others arts and yes, fighting did it exist even though you didn't get to see it. Grow up. Your attitude is the exact attitude he's talking about. Ignorance.

Wow… I just stumbled across this in a nostalgic moment of my past. Adam, I am also Adam… Hi 👋 I grew up in Western Australia and now live in Thailand with my Family, I learned 2 systems along the span of 10 years when I was younger, side by side, 1 being Boxing and in a rough neighborhood and Buk Sing Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu… also in a rough neighborhood from a tough teacher from Hong Kong… He emphasized ‘ring work and sparring’ every session. Everything you just said in this clip is 100% accurate and I am just completely gobsmacked that a Teacher ( Yourself )who is so genuine and humble about the topic with ZERO ego…🌟 I know this is not a recent clip but relevant to anyone wishing to pursue a path in the Martial Arts, I really hope more people can stumble across this clip and understand everything you have stated. Best of Luck Adam and Stay Well through this pandemic. 👊🌟

Adam Chan is the best teacher in my opinion. He has many videos outside of RU-vid. Would be nice to know of more teachers like him. To me, he is someone I can trust. To me, he has a high amount of integrity. He actual cares about the art he teaches. Very helpful in many ways helps people to be honest with themselves. The more of his videos I have watched the more I realize the videos which I seek are already available.

Most fighters are not martial artists, and most martial artists are not fighters. The majority of people are peaceful by nature (not a bad thing). A VERY small percentage of people are warriors. Wing Chun and boxing (striking) must be used with intent, otherwise they are of no effect. There are principles useful in EVERY martial art. But a fighter will always have an advantage against a martial artist because of their nature [even beyond "training"]. However, boxing HAS changed due to gloves [this is why punches are rounder, because the padding covers centerline]. If one wears boxing gloves one is in a boxing world, one should expect to find the boxer at an advantage. Without the natural curve of the wrist WC techniques are less useful and hardened fists are less of an advantage when the opponent wraps their wrists and wears gloves. However, one can see the old, bareknuckle boxers deployed very similar stances and techniques to Wing Chun; this was for a reason. Circumstances change technique. Technique is less important than the "ideas" or intent behind each movement. Empty movement lacks meaning, but fill the same movement with intent it gathers more power. Every man has different gifts and must uncover their own path. Tis a poor artist who blames the paint. A wise man can learn from folly but Fools are driven by pride and can never learn from the wise.

I doubt if it breaks down that clean and easy. some people are fighters but they just don't have the tools.I knew a boxer and he said "you are not proud of your boxing ability so I only have to hit you one time and you are convinced you lost and you are out of here.I get a dispute once in a while with some one that whipped his dad and his uncle all his cousins and he is undefeated thinks he is undeafeatable.I got to beat severely so he figures out he can't win against me."

It may be true that nowadays in North America, most martial artists are not fighters. But I've noticed that the good martial artists have some type of fighting experience or tries to incorporate their techniques into real fighting situations. It's like the saying, you can't expect to learn how to swim without getting into the water.
@bowlineobama
@bowlineobama 4 года назад
I agree. Adam Chan is correct in what he said, except that most people don't go to learn WC so that they can go and fight someone, like a professional boxer. Most of us want to learn about the art itself and its beauty, and for self defense when push comes to shove. We get into comparison of martial arts like we compared religions, which is very bad thing to do. No one martial art is better than another. It is all up to the individual who practicing it. There is a big difference between professional fighters and martial artists. They train differently. Martial artists trained not to get hit, where as provisional fighters trained being hit as well as to hit. Totally different.

👍👍👍 All good points Adam. Yeah, the vs mentality is not going to get folks anywhere, it's a fruitless endeavour. I spent a lot of time around boxing gyms, with homework assignments. It's honest feedback for sure. No messing around. Once you're cool getting hit and hitting, you can take it for granted and work on what you have set out to work on. Kind of like break falling in that at first you worry about getting hurt, but when that fades, you're free to take it for granted, and focus on the learning aspect without distraction. Most boxers I messed around with never got mad, they just got hurt, or they figured out a way to change things in their favour. Was cool, fun too. Anyway, very good train of thought and solid points. Thank you. : )

Thank you Adam for your view and comparison. I am a Wing Chun student for a few years. I am watching videos on RU-vid, because I am curious what others are doing. As I see it, you can not compare that with boxing. We are not training to fight, we are training self defence. The aim is to destroy an attacker as quickly as possible, by counterattacking before the attack gets us. We develop and concentrate on that skills. The training can only be cooperative, including sparring. If we carried out what we are training we would eventually kill. Sure that a boxer is a fighter, has intensive training, used to take and get punches and therefore has that advantage. But the purpose is different.
@TheChiconspiracy
@TheChiconspiracy 3 года назад
It's easy to say "we would eventually kill", but if you're not sparring correctly against resisting opponents (actually hitting them while they don't cooperate with you, which requires "unrealistic" protective gear), then you won't have the timing and sense of distance necessary to even make contact reliably. THAT is probably the biggest advantage that a boxer or other "sport" martial artist has, and why you see so many WC guys flailing and missing when actually putting their skills to the test against someone who doesn't want to play chi sao with them.

It should be common sense that there's different "Students" of Martial Arts. Those that put in the blood, sweat, and tears who also strive and push their body to limits. Then there's the people who want to lose weight, or it's a fad, they drop out within a year or two and never come back. Then there's the 3rd type, the fakers and people who believe that because they can bench 350 they are able to fight. As if skill and determination in working hard to lift, relates to fighting. So youtube is full of the 3rd type and the 2nd type. I don't dis on the guys and gals who just want to learn stuff for a "hobby". They help promote it. But it should be common freaking sense, a Boxer who sticks with Boxing is training hard. Compare Shaolin monks to a Boxer. Comparing your normal Wing Chun practitioner to every Boxer who put in years is insane. So that's why people "assume" that boxers will win every time over Wing Chun. It's about determination and sparring, learning, and blood, sweat, and tears. It's sad that Adam has to give Common Sense on MMA ideas and people everywhere are saying he's a Guru. This is common sense people.

I think the key point is that the individual is more important than the art. However I think when people do these art comparisons what they really want to know is assuming everything else is equal (dedication, physical attributes etc) which martial art discipline to study to yield the highest results in combat. Take GSP for example, say he spend all his time doing wing Chun instead of mma... does he flare better self defense wise (forget mma competition)? I think if we are judging the training methods, say you put a Krav Maga or wing Chun guy vs mma under no rules I lean towards mma trained guy still? I just think the way mma gyms train seem might train more effectively in general (yes there are always outliers)

Just like to say, that everything I heard in the video I absolutely agree with, very insightful opinion, which should in my humble opinion, be share by everyone, my own Sifu continually reiterates the importance of training in general, as it pertains to outside of class, he says that clearly even if you attended every class in a week, this would only amount to six hours, which is clearly no where near sufficient to develop a solid foundation in any training you undertake. With regards to boxing Vs wing chun, Sifu Adam Chan has, again, in my humble opinion, hit the nail on the head, you can't possibly make a comparison between the two, as to do so is not only counter productive, but an impossibility, due to a vast majority of "real" boxer being in the sport for non bravadoic reasons, thats to say they've nothing to prove, for example I'm from the UK, so can only draw upon my experience as an example, any boxing gym I've been involved in over the years, has been a spit and sawdust type, where the boxers training there, train for real, it becomes an inevitability that everyone gets hit really hard most of the time, and is taken as a result of the art, whereas the majority of martial arts classes I've train in, I have witnessed first hand the notion of the middle class pastime, who don't want at any point to get hit, just to gain the prestige of calling themselves a martial artist. So in conclusion this video was a truthful, accurate and insightful account, based in reality.

In a way, it is about styles, because each style has their training methodology, and the boxing training methodology is such that it discourages people who aren't there for real, who aren't willing to do the work, who aren't willing to put in the kung fu. On the other hand, traditional Chinese martial arts like Wing Chun, with its low-impact form work and IMO overemphasis on concepts and abstractions, tend to attract physically-inactive dorks who think because they are smart they can learn some esoteric art and beat the meathead boxers with their intellect.

Talking about the superiority of Wing Chun over Boxing is easy when using mere words, or when the demonstration is done with a student who does not demonstrate any vocation, dexterity or technique of a boxer, the best way to prove your point is to make a fight with a professional boxer, will you accept it, or will it just be in the words?

As someone that has taught traditional martial arts, my biggest obstacle is people thinking that martial arts is something cute because that's what they've seen in the movies. And the moms thinking that their kids look so cute in the uniform. UGH, I'm glad I don't teach anymore, it's not worth it. With boxing, they know Rocky having his face all smashed up at the end of the fight, and they expect that in training.

Most boxers ARE afraid to get hit. That's why they spend so much time tap dancing; they come in for a punch or a combination and then move back out of range and dance around to avoid getting hit. I've always felt that people should learn martial arts like boxers in a gym with individuals training on what they need to do perhaps with a coach but never as a class of students standing in rows doing the same things at the same time, especially exercises. People have individual levels of ability and need to develop at their own pace. Everyone doing everything at the same time holds some people back while others are unable to keep up and become discouraged. Such a standard of teaching is also a part of the classical mess. Wing Chun fighters are used to sparring with each other and, like other traditional martial artists, seldom have any real world experience sparring with anyone outside of their system resulting in them getting their ass beat by grapplers and kickboxers. A primary problem is training so much with chi sao yet beginning a fight in a stance that doesn't enable any chi sao application. Instead of waiting for an opponent to attack while in a classical static stance, the Wing Chun person should actively approach an opponent as if to engage in chi sao thereby intercepting their arms and entering into position to strike. Everyone should include doyo boxing in their training. Doyo boxing is simply Sumo wrestling that includes boxing. It's directness combined with regular wrestling clothing that prohibits the clothing from being grabbed (as the Sumo wrestlers do) trains one to be quick on one's feet in dealing with a relentless aggressive opponent. No tap dancing, no circling around to get an advantageous position. Just straight into it with realistic consideration for what techniques are truly effective upon contact. Li Jun Fan had never been purely Wing Chun. Before he began Wing Chun, he had already been a street fighter with real world experience that had exceeded simple martial arts training.

It's a shame the martial arts have become a middle class hobby. That's why it is producing so many poor fighters. It is not the martial arts, it is the person who is training poorly.

I disagree with both of you on certain points, but Kelly was right to point out to say that WC's straight line punches are "superior" is a biased statement. Actually anyone who says "superior" or that "Wing Chun will never" can honestly be disproven by history. Every system will have only a few handful of legitimate fighters, when they hit, it will hit with the same force as any one punching technique; never get arrogant about this stuff. But with WC's current history into modern times, none of us in the style really have and pedestal to be standing on and make bold statements like that considering the amount of crap the system has taken over the few decades. Though it does beg the fact that Wong Shun Leung, one of Wing Chun's heavy hitters actually used to practice western boxing and it combined with his Wing Chun made him a guy that wasn't to be toyed with.

Why can’t you just answer the question directly? The title is wing chun vs boxing! Not all this bullshit about some people who train shitty, aren’t used to getting hit or training like rocky! In that case, what about a seasoned hardcore veteran fighter who could get flash knocked out by being taken by surprise, etc? Why can’t you just pit the styles against each other? Talk about and demonstrate the styles, not the strengths and weaknesses of people which may or may not matter! Or correct the title of your videos; “ shitty ethics and training vs serious routine and commitment”!
@adamchankungfu
@adamchankungfu 6 лет назад
The reason is because styles don't make the fighter, the individual does. It not black and white. If it was just about styles, then picking the right style would guarantee success. I guess I could've dumb it down for low IQ viewers like "top 5 techniques against this or that" . The truth is in any style only the top guys can fight well , most people in a given style are hobbiest who don't train all that much- just like most people commenting on the internet . On a side note , a lot of people ask why I do not make more videos. This is the exact reason why , you go take the time to film , edit and post something for free for people and they do not even have the decency to be mildly respectful when expressing their opinion. Man the entitled age we live in

I totally agree with alot, but at the end of the day...NO. "Wing Chun beat boxing!!"... "Well yeah but...." No yeah and no but! At best Bruce Lee beat a boxer; no wing chun system beat boxing! Theory will not allow for it! So contrary to what you say Adam, it IS a matter of which system is better, that is, a matter of physics and logic, that by comparison prove boxing is the realest deal and that wing chun is not. It's objective, not subjective. I know it hurts, but I love truth, only truth and nothing but the truth. The fact that the platform (training methodology) of boxing is what it is, it immediately destroys the wing chun platform. The platform (and the techniques and strategies there upon) is part of the system, and boxing is the real deal. You literally train to fight, not to act like fighting. Boxing is for fighting trained fighters, wing chun is at best(!) for fighting untrained fighters. I'd love to see the Bruce Lee fight with a real boxer. I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS REALLY HAPPENED. Why can't I find it? BL would be whooped real bad in the first 1st minute. Please provide that link and blow my mind; it must be some parody or the guy was paid off or intimidated, I have to see to be sure what happened. PS. Adam, why don't you bring a real boxer, nevermind Kevin "that boxed alot" and let him move freely as he likes.. Do some types of experiments e.g. fight only with hand strikes (anywhere) and throws, no kicks.. 2) Professional boxers are people too, some get intimidated, especially against a Bruce Lee guru type. So if such a fight ever took place, that guy did not use his tools because he had no real intent for hurting Bruce. Wing Chun inflates Bruce, to support their system, their schools, their pocket.
