In September 2018, the Beeck Center hosted author Anand Giridharadas to discuss his new book Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World. Executive Director Sonal Shah led the conversation.
I don't know exactly how this fella got to the place where he can get an audience at georgetown to listen to him tell them that their class and the careers they are going into are the exact reason that our society is fucked, but kudos. I think a lot of working class people could have told them this any time in the last 50+ years, but how often are dirty grunts without any money actually listened to? Kudos for being the kind of highly competent, successful individual who can maintain some degree of perspective, rather than simply partying with everyone else at the tip of the pyramid.
@@smallstudiodesign that’s what he meant. But notice that our class, I’m a baker, of blue collar working people, working with our hands, trades, back breaking work, sailors who go fish for months to get a catch in dangerous waters, masons, carpenters, painters, ect… don’t show up in the radar. It’s like they think we r a small class of losers, bc let’s face it, capitalism has winners and losers. They would hv us believe.
Imagine if all companies and wealthy individuals without exception simply paid tax in this country. There would be little if no need for their "generous" philanthropy.
@@rebelsnappingturtle5097 you're right about that unfortunately. Politicians from the big 2 parties (Lib/Lab) are heavily beholden to their big funds contributors who don't want them to fix this problem. Also many of those politicians are actually avoiding tax themselves via offshore tax havens, etc. This won't be fixed without first getting the money out of politics....and that's an even bigger challenge IMO.
America is the wealthiest country in the world with a list of achievements like no other country but the American people are expected to believe universal medical coverage is a bridge too far!
Anand was going easy on Sonal may be due to respect of the relationship. you should watch some of his later talks, he rips apart all the philanthropic benefit system
Shah is the epitome of what this book is about. Thinking the financialization of pollution is going to solve climate change is proof. Even us serfs did not believe, but a Goldman-Sachs player thinks it is all good. The questions afterwards are pretty insufferable too. The Beeck Center is full of itself.
She is trying to sell the usual bs that isolated individuals could actually leave a dent in a corrupt system. What a bunch... It is a living proof that our elite political system does not produce loyal citizens no matter how smart they are. It is not even about being smart; it is about being decent.
he was talking about how the wealthy block change when they control the idea and the action. why she can´t understand it?! it is not the "people" and change is complex, the upper class don´t want to change equals no change at all for everyone got it?!
Loved the intro “government doesn’t innovate”, except DARPA gave us the internet, the VA came up with the G.I. Bill which helped build the middle class...guess economics and history aren’t Georgetown’s strong suits.
Did you conveniently miss the second part what she said? Government doesn't innovate but it funds innovation. I wonder why you had to miss that part to put down her.
@@KugoCho sir, please do research before spilling nonsense. Most of the medical research is funded by govt and once patent is made viable it is sold to private companies for mass production. Internet that you use is a product of govt funding(DARPA), so is mobile communication, 4G ! Basically any major invention in the past 50-70years is done majorly or partially by government. Private companies before never could match the government funding. I don't think it will remain same in future with trillion dollar companies.
@@craigcoughlin1834 no sir, government is a beurocratic juggernaut. Such institutions are not capable of innovation. But such huge institutions have money and they can fund unis, hospitals, companies for R&D. America has figured out this Long time back ! That's why US govt is a major fund for all universities and now some major IT companies as well.
Well to do communities have better funding for schools is based on the belief that education is a private right, not a public right. In fact, many want to privatize schools and end public education. So that’s what lies beneath the savagery of disparity in school funding.
I'm 1/2 way into this video and this host seem to struggle listening to Anand's when he criticizes institutions she is/was part of. She cutS him off when he started talking specifics about what her university could do better (44:15). Her introduction was also cringeworthy, framing the issues as something that governments are incapable of solving and that only private sector can innovate. I don't know how Anand manages to get invitation to speak at these places, maybe because his message is getting enough traction that they cannot ignore him or his publisher has connections. Good for him.
The roar and agreement from the Georgetown young crowd was so exhilarating to me that I cried when hearing it AND, the first time wanted to be young and one of them so I could participate in that energy!! There is hope.
Sonal does not connect the dots about why people dont want the environmental laws....the margins are so small for small business that they cant afford it. Guess why they're in such a bad place?
Have no issue with people getting or being rich. I do resent subsidizing billionaires when I make less that $50000 a year. Such is this billionaires world.
The only differences of the element ingredients between the West and East is the "soul", "empathy", and virtue of basic "humanity" that the West never equipped with to able make the world a better place. in short, a Culture without a "heart" couldn't bear the capacities making difference of status quo. So, the story is not the 1% are greedy, yes, it is, But "Apathy" in DNA and in their blood failed to changed the world. Me, Me, Me society is the "road block" for social change. That is, unless you upheaval the transfixed culture system, which never happen, the modern system works wonder, why change?
This man is missing some huge things about society. First in absolute terms society is better of than it was 10 years ago let alone 40. Second income is not the best way to measure happiness. Nor is it a statement of unfairness. Third aside from those who inherit, the top folks just don’t sit on a beach and collect checks. Try being a ceo and your on 24/7 for years. Fourth no mention of peoples choice. If Zuckerberg had a gaggle of kids in college do you really think he would’ve invented Facebook? The changes he wants to make require a little tweaking, simplicity but only works if folks want to do better. This is nothing but class warfare cloaked as humanitarian must dos.
