Loved the video she did for NOVA's Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers in which she tells the story of when people used to ask her "Are you the girl from The Wonder Years?" instead started asking her "Are you the girl who scored the 22 in the Multi-variable calculus test?" which was the top score -- below her were two 15's and everyone else was 9 or below!

I'm one of the kids from the 80s who had a crush. I have her books in hardcover on my math books shelves, after finding them many years ago in a used book shop in LA. My friend jokingly printed out her paper and put it in my Christmas stocking about 15 years ago, and I still have it around here somewhere. I've known the full title for that long, just in case I ever run into her, so I could go, "Aren't you that girl from... Percolation and Gibbs States..." But I guess now everyone knows 😆

"I just knew that this [working in maths] was what I needed to do then." This is such an important attitude to have! Don't worry so much about defining yourself based on what your whole life will be. It helps to focus on what you need at this moment in time. It's OK to find that at different stages of your life, you have different focuses or aims and goals. And it's also OK if you focus on just one thing for your whole life! The important thing is regularly self-assessing to make sure that the direction you're taking is the right one for you right now.

I don't think an actress and a composer coming up with the idea to use a player-piano mechanism for frequency hopping radio-guided torpedoes quite meets the levels in math and science that McKeller and Bialik achieved. Yes coming up with the idea was pretty brilliant, but they weren't "mathing it out" or anything, just pointing out that an already-existing piece of technology could be used for another application.
