One of the most popular pawn structures arising from the majority of queen’s pawn openings is the structure known as the Carlsbad structure. There are several openings from which the Carlsbad structure can likely arise, like the Queen’s Gambit, the Nimzo-Indian Defense, the Gruenfeld Defense, the Semi-Slav and the Caro-Kann Defense. A typical Carlsbad position arises after the moves: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 c6 5.e3 Nbd7 6.cxd5 exd5. This is the so-called Carlsbad variation of the Queen’s Gambit Declined. Since the Carlsbad structure is rich in ideas we will cover typical plans and strategies for both, the white and the black side.
In this fourth lesson, GM Alex Lenderman is focusing on winning ideas and strategies for black in the Carlsbad structure.
Basic ideas for black in the Carlsbad structure:
The key is the knight on d6. The knight is usually very good attacker and defender in a way.
The b5-idea for black is also very interesting.
Once the queen side play is more or less shut down, then black really can shift his attention to put a lot of pressure on the king side.
