Best podcast concept by far. Every word is a revelation and insight to a world most of us will never know. It brings home how good you have to be and how you have to maintain that level against tremendous odds. Fascinating content! Rick, you struck gold.

magic story - riveting. That's what's great at golf. It reminded me of a mad tense situation I was in as a 16 handicapper playing for my club but feeling I couldn't miss. It's only happened me maybe 3 times in my life but it's a great feeling. The bigger the crowd got the better. Knocked it around the back 9 in level par to reach a play off and won on the first extra hole. A year later playing in the same inter club comp I played a round without a single par and barely a bogey.... I remember losing my match on the 17th - was 10 feet short of the green - needing to chip a two putt to win the hole and I couldn't manage it. Mad game.

The football analogy is an interesting one. About 200 players made over $100,000 dollars on the PGA Tour in 2019 (last full season pre-covid). That is around the rumoured average salary for League 1 in English football. The money runs way deeper in football - I suspect the 500th best golfer in the world makes about the same money as the 5000th best footballer.

Two people that James mentions here, Marcus Armitage and Jack Senior. He beats both of them at open qualifying. Both play on European tour with Armitage having won last year on European tour. There's no doubt he had the skill to be one of the best in the world

I just found this podcast with James. I was astounded at what he said, surprised at the financial commitment but more at the mental pounding he took. The tiers of card earnings and events allowed is mind blowing. The money you can earn is a surprise on for an example europro. This podcast should be on the R&A website, all the Golf Magazines websites and every other place aspiring Pro Golfers are likely to look. It's an eye opener for anyone trying to get on a tour. Bottom line I reckon, don't bother unless you have the golf game and mental stability. I know someone can turn pro on a 6.8 handicap. This is a mistake in my opinion. To make it past q school you got to be a minimum of a scratch player, preferably a + handicapper. Players who are used to shooting under par, 2-5 over ain't gonna be good enough. I saw a newly turned pro recently win an event, the field wasn't big, he won £30!
