It's one of the sweetest stories in sports history. These two very different men (young men at the time) who are so gifted but competitive as hell. End up being each other's soulmates on and off the court. I mean Larry was so good, Magic has spent his whole life telling people..

That actor playing Bird is the rare case of he's so spot on to an eaeily degree channeling Larry Legend it makes everybody else in the cast instantly look like community theatre actors by comparison. He's too perfect. He's so spittin' image of Bird that all the medium camera takes with the entire ensemble in one shot make it seem like the real Larry Bird was digitally inserted into footage of recreated scenes shot with lookalike stand in dayplayers. He looks too good. It plays tricks with your mind. I can never lose myself into the reality of the show when he shows up because suddenly it goes from scripted drama to instantly documentary like realism then smash cut back to pretend make believe over and over. The whiplash mind f*ck is incredible. Should be a ride at Disneyland.

@@2115Randy it's not like Magic came onto an already star filled team while Bird came to a team that lost like 60 games the year before or anything lol Magic won one right away and the West wasn't as strong as the East. Bird had to go through the 76ers and the bad boy Pistons just to get to the Finals. Bird won the first time they faced each other in 84. Bird lost to him in 86 in a series so close, it basically came down to a game winning shot by Bird that bounced out of the rim in game 3 or 4. In 87 the Celtics and Pistons fought through an extremely physical 7 game series highlighted by Bird's famous steal in game 5, eventually winning the series but they had little left in the tank for the Lakers in the Finals. Don't try and dis on Bird young fella, you will only embarrass yourself. From 84-88, for 4 straight seasons Bird was a 50/40/90 shooter (founding member of that club btw) while putting up just over 28 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists per game. Do you know how many other players have matched that? ZERO! Feal free to do some research, you won't any player's that can match that in 4 seasons, let alone 4 straight.

Bottom line is this documentary is about when Majic and Bird brought the NBA from certain Death. When Majic and Bird entered the league it all changed. It was a boom for network TV. Yep players actually cared if they won the basketball game. Sadly the NBA has died. When ya give a guy millions from shoes made in China or Taiwan and more millions just to show up, why would ya care if you win or lose? As you see now with arenas 1/3 full, the Millionaire players go back and forth up and down the court not really caring. Erving Johnson and Larry Bird and Michael and many more from that ERA actually cared about winning.

Do not forget Cooper. I watched basketball at that time and for some reason Cooper to me have Bird fits. Then I hated the Lakers, but I watch them and could not figure out how you could beat them. They were that talented and good. I was amazed when Celtics could slow them down and beat them (I was a Celtics fan). Now as and adult I care for that LA team because I learned it is not how many wins, it is who you beat that makes you truly great. Man so many evenly matched great teams back then. Dr. J was the so good, Moses Malone, just on and on. Oh yeah, go back to the old wooden rackets in Tennis so we can see a game and not just serves. Dang sports manipulated to satisfy the casual fan (just to see numbers on the board) has ruined many sports for me. Surprised they have not added 10’ width and 4’ height to the soccer goals so we can see more points.

If you look at championship sprinters in track and field there is a certain height range that is the ideal height range for sprinters and it is well below the height range for basketball forwards. In addition it seems to me like I have heard that guards tend to have greater vertical leaps than forwards and centers. The CELTICS had FOUR Hall of Famers. Their best player in 1984 was Cedric Maxwell. Other than Game 4, skinny little Michael Cooper had Bird in his back pocket the entire series. The Celtics won that series on thuggery and dirty tactics and bush league tactics like turning up the thermostat to try to injure old Kareem, setting off the alarm in the Lakers hotel in the middle of the night, dirty fouls, clotheslines, terrible biased officiating and more bush tacts. The next year, the Lakers came back angry and the Celtics smapped like the cowards they were.

Well, I mean there were a few factors. I do think overall, Magic had a better supporting cast. No disrespect to McHale, Parrish, and Johnson but Kareem, Worthy, Cooper, Scott are a better overall core imo. And the Lakers were the best fast break team in that era. They usually ran teams off the court with their pace. The Celtics were the only team in the league that could somewhat matchup talent wise but they had to play a physical style and slow the game down to get an edge. I consider Magic the best PG in history and one of the best ever but I do give Bird a slight edge as an individual player. Bird was good enough to do the majority of the heavy lifting and get the Celtics to those finals to face the Lakers, and even win one. But those Lakers were a juggernaut of a team. No shame in losing to that team.

I mean.... the difference in rings was 1987. If the Celtics had won that championship, it would have been 4 to 4. I'd like to have seen that series played with a healthy Walton, Wedman, Bias, McHale and Parish before concluding which superstar player was better. The Lakers were able to run the Celtics off the court because half the team was injured (or worse).
