I love these inks! After trying this set I went out and bought every color at my local art store. Since the shellac is so hard to wash out I use semi-disposable bamboo pens.
Jamie Snyder Hi Jamie - Great tip on the bamboo pens. This was my first time trying these inks and I just really enjoy them. What a great product. Thanks for checking out the vid.
Hollyistotallycool You're absolutely correct. It is a dip pen and I was incorrectly calling it a fountain pen. Thanks for the correction, much appreciated.
Greta review - thanks! I have been tempted to buy these for sketching, so it's great to see the colours, and how they perform with dip pens. Just wanted to add that W&N have two sets of ink. These are shellack based, and are intended for illustration. They are called permanent, but that just means they are waterproof due to the shellack. However, they are NOT lightfast. So they are great for work that will be scanned, or kept away from light, for example, in sketchbooks. The shellack means they can't be used in fountains.........W&N also offer calligraphy inks. These ARE pigmented and lightfast. Because they are water soluble, they're safer on brushes, and can be added to fountain pens (with care). They're also great for ink wash drawings. So both types are great for their intended purpose. For some reason, i can't find the calligraphy inks locally (Nova Scotia), so have to order them on line, which makes them a bit more costly.
***** Hi Vicki - Great info and thanks for sharing. I'll have to try those calligraphy inks at some point. I think they'd be good to try, especially for washes. Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to leave a comment.
Vicki Wood I’m guessing their calligraphy inks are not the thing to use if you want to do a watercolour wash over the ink. Or it may depend on the paper you use, like if it’s cellulose or cotton based as Ive read this might make an ink bond better and be less prone to “lifting” after drying depending on the ink brand/the maker’s formula. I’m really wanting to draw with ink and then do watercolour over the drawing then maybe draw more ink on top of that. This would be on 100% cotton watercolour paper, either hot or cold pressed depending on the project. Arches or Strathmore Series 500. Anyways, I’m interested in hearing your experience with the calligraphy form of the W & N inks. This ink subject does get a little complicated technically. I’d like to avoid shopping and buying inks that won’t work for my stated purpose. I don’t mind (and kinda like) using dip pens, but my working “style” for this project will be rather fast, using a lot of uninterrupted ink, so I’d like to avoid dipping if possible as well. I’m gonna be switching nibs (pens) throughout the work for this project too, but that’s not important to my question I guess. Any experience you could pass on to guide my intention would be much appreciated. Cheers from Ottawa.👍🇨🇦
I believe that they are water solvable except for the India ink. Haven't personally used them though. I HAVE hears that if you are planning on using them to paint with, it is a good idea to have a palette with the inks and not to dip the brush into the wells, especially if the brush is going into water inbetween. And apparently the water needs to be distilled because there is a chance for mold to grow in the well if contaminated. I've seen that many people using the dip pens also like to dilute to get a lighter tint for the ink colors for ones such as yellow and orange since they are pretty dark straight from the well. I've always been interested in these drawing inks and glad to see a review up on your channel!
Great review! I've had this set for awhile and something I noticed was that the shellac in the darker inks, like the violet and the blue, begins to build up over time. I don't know if it was just my set where it did this, but little specs of built up residue is clearly visible when I made washes. Not sure if this will happen to you or not, but it might be something to note!
BitterSweetNitemare I got a "William" set last week which was the alternate set to these. I had to return them as the shellac in the yellow had sedimented to the point that the ink was opaque and you could see hundreds of little shards of it floating about. The other colours were perfect, but it's put me off getting a replacement set.
Owings Art I have the set of 12 and their gold and silver ink. I really enjoy the winsor and newton inks over all, they are my only shellac (I think that's how it's spelled) inks.
I really like inks I tend to use a lot of acrylic or India inks. I think you would definitely enjoy them. you can do lots of watercolor type techniques with them and they work well on canvas. 😊
Shannon Sand I never thought about canvas, I'll have to give that a try Shannon. I have some wooden panels I want to try as well. I've really been enjoying them this week.
just today i ran into these in my local art store and was a little skeptic that it would be as bad as Parker's ink was. Now I actually will get this as I know it is just what I was looking for! :)
hi thank you so much for sharing this video....i have just bought these inks ...can I use them with water colour brushes and if so how do i clean my escoda watercolour brushes kindest regards ☺
Thanks for the question. I don't post any scans. My website is all about the Artistic journey and not so much about the Art supplies. Maybe so me day I'll post them on a separate site. Thanks! ~Marty
I have one question, are these safe to use with brushes? Ive been using inks for a long time but these contain shellac. I wouldnt use these inks for calligraphy anyway, only watercolor- like. Thx! -btw awesome review!!!
What is the song you use for your intro. Lovely video. Upload more of Caran D`ache, Winsor and Newton, Derwent and Faber Castell And Ethan`s videos too. Tell Ethan Best of Luck. I liked his video a lot.
Shreykishore Bangera Hi Shreykishore - That music is from my Apple iMovie software, I think it's called playful. I'll pass on your kind remarks to Ethan. Thank you!
Hey could we use this type of ink in a regular fountain pen? I mean...I see you using dip-pens but would the ink flow properly in a Lamy Safari for example?
Hi Zefy - Yes, I think these work fine in a regular fountain pen, but you MUST clean them out afterward I believe. Otherwise this ink will dry out and clog the tip from what I've heard. Maybe others can verify this. Thank you for the question.
Thanks for this video ... really informative... :) Answered a lot of my questions but... I have had this one particular question rattling around in my head and have searched the internet But google can't seem to make sense of my question... which is this: I hear people use the terms *India Ink* and also *Indian Ink* ... Is there an actual difference or is it just terminology?
Are they waterproof after they have dried on paper? I've been looking for waterproof ink in variety of colors but i cant seem to find a good fit for what I'm looking for
+zekehooper Ahhhh, yes, the colors are a bit strange with ink sometimes. I mix colors without a second thought, so I can make a deeper red by adding a little green to it. If you add too much green, you'll get brown. However because red is a primary color, you'll need a red color to start with. Try a green and let me know what you think. Thanks - Marty
If you're looking for a deeper red to paint with, Winsor and Newton has one in the William Collection of these Drawing Inks called "Deep Red". I have that one and finds it to be quite bright to draw with(at least when drawing fine lines), but deeper and darker to paint with. So that depends on what your looking for. :)
+Listya Ari Quoted from W&N website: "Our drawing inks are dye-based, fast-drying, water resistant, transparent, and instantly recognisable by their classic packaging. Our calligraphy inks are pigment-based, water-soluble and permanent, perfect for the art of calligraphy."
In this vid you keep calling the dip pen a fountain pen. If you put these inks into a fountain pen you'll ruin the pen because the ink will block the feed. Thought I should point this out just incase anyone was thinking of filling a fp with these inks.
