Winter Begins on the Ranch

In the first days of winter, everything on the ranch needs to prepare for snow and extreme temperatures. From cows to machinery, they all need attention. This week, come along as we feed the cows for one of the first times this winter, then help as we put machinery away for the season and also get some winter essentials out to get to work. Also a growing tradition is upheld with the burning of the summer hat.

I like the hat ceremony. Mine have stages so I wear as the occasion calls for. When they’re new, I only wear when I’m showered and going out. Once they get worn in and sweaty they become everyday wear. After that they just kinda hang around. Thanks again for an awesome video! I’m addicted!

I tried keeping them around for a bit, Erin got tired of old wore out straw hats, plus she says they stink. I cant smell it but I'm sure they do by the time they are at the end of their life. Thanks Scott - Mike

Hi Mike and Erin. The winters in southeast Wyoming were long, cold, windy and very snowy back in the 70's and 80's. I always looked forward to the season, since growing up in SoCal, we had none of it. The older I get, the harder it is on my joints. But, I make it thru, and look that much more ahead to spring! Hope your winter goes by quickly, and it's a healthy and safe one for the herd and your family. Have a great week! Deb

Thanks Deb. It does that a little bit here. We get a few cold weeks with snow and then a few nice days will melt all the snow and make a muddy mess. Lots of fun! - Mike

We build a lot of wind breaks for our cattle. For us soak weed is common and we add to double screen fences to provide wind breaks for the cattle. They come in behind the wind break when the wind gets up. It helps.

Too bad about the jack stand, glad it still works 🙂, for putting up implements in our machine sheds we used our bobcat, one of the pallet forks had a hole in the end to hitch pin the machines we were moving. Not sure if it was bought like that or we put it there. But using the bobcat did make that task easier. Too bad that cake feeder doesn’t have it’s own little trailer then any vehicle with a hitch could pull it around. Nice video as usual, I like the hat tradition.
@OurWyomingLife
@OurWyomingLife 6 лет назад
Hey there, thanks a bunch. I never thought of doing a trailer for the cake feeder, thats a good idea. Although the cows can be pretty pushy and they might knock it ever which way. Thanks! - Mike

Surprised you dont have wheel poppers to push vehicles where they need to be. And a power jack or pallet jack to move supply closer and tighter. Then if the vehicle was stored until winter. Just cover it. And add stabilizer to the furl tanks. To keep it from Gunking up. Your doing a awesome job. Be proud of yourself.

Mike, I worked outside yesterday in shorts, & tee shirt. It was 73 daytime temp., 55 degrees last. Winter hasn't got here yet, we did see snow flakes 2 weekends ago. I glad I am where I am. I do enjoy winter, I'm just not ready for it. Stay warm, before I forget you said something about hunters. Tell us about them what, they hunt, how many they harvest, where do they stay. You brought up the subject.
@OurWyomingLife
@OurWyomingLife 6 лет назад
That I did. We have a video about the hunters here on the ranch. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p6PUnJey2t0.html Most of them here hunt antelope, and most usually take 2. Some prefer bucks and some does. Most stay in a hotel in town but a few have brought trailers and stayed on the ranch. Thanks Anthony. - Mike

Caking the cows was easy for us. We put the truck in grandma gear( slow as a slow walk) then we leave the cab, hop on the bed of the truck and open cake sacks. the cows all move to the rear of the truck to eat. When were done the truck did it's job poling along at a snail pace. Then back to the warmth of the truck.

What's interesting is companies like Hi Pro label the bags as range cubes. Hi Pro is in Texas. My uncle, who ranches in New Mexico, sometimes refers to them as cubes and other times as cake. But most ranchers in New Mexico call them cake.

Hey Mike. I just recently became a subscriber to your channel. I used to live on a black Angus farm in Southern Wisconsin and now I live in Northern Michigan. I’ve always loved life on the farm and ranch. I basically was just scanning RU-vid channels for something to remind me I’m home and I stumbled upon your channel. I love what you guys are doing! I have a request/suggestion. What if you gave away your summer hat to a random subscriber? I love my straw hat and would have a hard time burning it. You could do some sort of sweepstakes for raffle of some kind. Just a thought. Keep making videos. They brighten my day.
@GrantTravels23
@GrantTravels23 5 лет назад
I accidentally did that with the sweeps 😂😂😂 My dad was pissed he had to go to town for a jack stand. 😂😂😂 Live n learn! 😂😂 Oh, btw, it might be prudent to keep your bailer hooked up to the tractor which you store for the winter if they both fit in the barn that way? I just say that, cuz God forbid if there ever was a fire, then hopefully you could get everything out in time cuz you blocked your tractor in with the bailer. Plus u can air up and rotate the tires on the bailer midwinter, if you have the room? Bailers cuz of their weight, are notorious for having flat tires when stored

Ok, here's a dumb question. Why two tractors? I like feeding the cake with a feeder as I've almost been run over a few times feeding on foot. I swear those cows grow dorsal fins and the music from Jaws starts playing when they hear the bags open!
@OurWyomingLife
@OurWyomingLife 6 лет назад
They do become sharks for cake. We actually have three tractors including the one we feed with. Mostly its for haying. Having one tractor to cut hay, while another rakes and another bales. Also if a tractor goes down I have a backup to feed with. Cant feed without a tractor very easily. Thanks! Mike

Evenin' Mike, I've gotta question.... I have owned a few hats in my time. I even have a Rodeo King Felt (the first my wife bought) that's over 20 years old, it's been rebuilt a time or 2. How is it that you get the upward bend in the front of your brim? Pushing up with your thumb? Your black felt does not show the same characteristic. Just wonderin'.
@OurWyomingLife
@OurWyomingLife 6 лет назад
Yeah the upward bend on my straw hat just comes from use and wear. The straw hat probably has more give and honestly I'm not as gentle with it as I am my Stetson. Great question. Thanks -Mike

Can you put the cake feeder in the other gator
@OurWyomingLife
@OurWyomingLife 6 лет назад
I'm not sure if it would fit. The bad thing about that little gator is that it has no suspension, its pretty rough to ride across the field. I'm not even sure if it could hold 600lbs. Thanks for watching - Mike

Hi Alec, its a Stull Feeders cake feeder. I purchased it online and it was delivered in a couple of boxes which we had to assemble but its been a great little feeder. Thanks for watching - Mike
