On this video I carry out a fork replacement on my Cannondale MTB removing the 2.5 kg Suntour ones and replacing with some exotic carbon forks weighing around 900g.
And make my old mountain bike ready for some winter/rough terrain Bikepacking trips, using most of the bags from my usual Bikepacking bike.
It will be used on a trip soon when Ian and I head back to the canals, so will be good test, and I’m sure I will find things that work well, and stuff that doesn’t.

Good conversion. A couple of things from my touring MTB (29er) I have fitted full mudguards, sick of getting covered in mud and crap. (Cube do a really good set that fit any make of bike) Also Schwalbe "Smart Sam" tyres are great for touring. Roll really well, yet offer good grip and they never seem to wear down! Cant wait for your trip over to Huddersfield.

forgot to say dave have a look at jagwire iam sure they do a rubber sleeve that goes around the outer cable to stip it knocking on the headtube 👍

Looking good Dave and ready for some mud. Prepping the bike for adventure is surely all part of the fun. Good idea about going rigid too, especially if you're not out to do any technical terrain. I specifically went with a rigid mtb for the simplicity, i do take it on some rough stuff and honestly haven't missed suspension. Slightly softer tyre pressure and a looser grip on the bars help. Might i suggest a bit of electrical tape around the cables that are rattling against the head tube, might help to dampen the noise and protect the frame 👍

Thanks Barney, yeah those original forks are purely cosmetic as unable to use them for technical stuff anyway 🤷‍♂️ Lower pressure and rigid much better and lighter. I will try some tape , but I think the rattle is inside the frame as you go over bumps and gravel , and I can’t get to that 😂😂 atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍

good decision dave heavy suspension fork just not needed unless your doing technical cross country.wider tyres lower pressure is definitely the trend 👍 you've just reminded me i need a new lower cartridge headset bearing on my Ribble 🚴

Those original forks are completely useless Geordie , heavy and unfit for purpose ! the new carbon ons with lower pressure tyres are much better and so much lighter. atb Dave

I really like that set up, the cannondale frame is a great bit of kit. The set up looks like it will see you through most winter weather conditions. I will be interested to see how the new forks fair in your next adventure out with Ian. ATB Big Dave Scotland
