n this video, I’m going to show you how I upgraded my winter hammock camping kit with a new onewind outdoors 800 down topquilt. This topquilt is amazing: it’s only 2lbs, but it can keep me warm from 0 to -20°F. It’s also versatile: I can use it for hammock camping or ground camping. If you’re interested in this topquilt, you can check it out on the onewind outdoors website here.

If it’s really cold, and I’m trying to keep a top quilt (or 2) from falling off or out of the hammock, I will use a hammock with a bug net to keep everything contained. In extreme cold you can really stack the insulation that way. Onewind makes excellent products.

Fold the hood inside. I am continually amazed at the new generation of camping bags and outer wear and boots and camping gear. i was so happy with my first set of nylon insulated underwear i wore then hunting day and night. Dark Brown with knitted cuffs. Sleeping on the kitchen table of a i bed room Cabin with a screened in porch. i slept on the kitchen table a 6' round wooden table which shared the kitchen with a blue and white Cast iron Stove brought in by boat. No Road no electric. Left them for my brothers with my 2000 grm boots, tan Wal-Mart coverall and all when i returned to Fl.

Blackie: Just wanted you to know i dropped your name when I recently bought an MSS bivvy bag from Kaufman's after watching your tour of the store. Like new (or perhaps new), and at a much better price I could find elsewhere. The lady at the store was very helpful and pleasant; it was like the old days shopping. Thanks for the info and advice. You are a prepper/camper national treasure.

Thanks Blackie. Excellent product and vid. Can you talk a little about the straps to attach to the ground pad please in your next review. Do they come with the top quilt? Regarding use as a sleeping bag, I think this has great possibilities. The way forward for all sleeping bags? Onewind could develop a line of bags with no underside specifically for attaching to ground pads.

I found a deal on a Ledge -20 mummy, ninety bucks, but one +10 nite in it left me sleepless, sweaty then cold. In the a.m. water was dripping out of it. So I sliced it and stitched up the ends-all it was was 2 layers of hollofill inside. Now it’s great so there is a use for a mummy bag just not as it was intended.

I’ve used the Onewind underquilt from my hammock set many times when ground pounding, as a top quilt. Just throw it in the shelter and use it as a blanket, and it’s kept me comfy down to near freezing using it alone. I may have to invest in this down quilt.

I've had an underquilt and Top quilt for a couple years . I love the TQ in the hammock , but prefer a top zip sleepingbag on the ground. Too many drafts occur rolling over in the ground and the straps make it way too hard to get in and out of to pee. If I could sleep thru the night it wouldn't be too bad I guess. Not sure if you've done a vid on R value of airpads. My 3.2 R pad is only warm to 40 degrees. Below that I go to my Xtherm 6.9 R. This is very important going from a thick heavy bag to a lightweight hiking bag. Great vid.

Oh mah Lord, Blackie- you done did it now huh? Have you tried a full night sleeping under that yet? After freezing my what you would call Silver Wolf tushi off on two nights, I researched and got a lightweight down top quilt. I tried testing it out two nights at home when temperatures dropped to mid forties. My quilt goes nowhere near your temperature rating and the quilt was so hot, the first night I kicked it off my body in my sleep and the second night I had kicked it off completely … also in my sleep. I also discovers that the material sounds familiar when handled. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but then it hit me: it sounds just like a baby’s disposable diaper! Ha ha ha! Yup- you’re in for some nice and toasty nights with your quilt! I bought a Zenbivy sleep system and it too is light as a feather. I feel bad for getting one during these economic times. I used Christmas and birthday funds to get it awhile ago. The one downside I discovered was that they are luxury items and therefore when you read the washing instructions, us menfolk find out what womenfolk have to do when they wash their delicates. No chucking these in the wash and and forgetting it. You have to use the most gentile cycle. Can’t hang dry these things unless you want the down to clump up on one end. Have to also put it in the lowest heat cycle in the dryer with tennis balls to redistribute the down. So what I’m saying is that I inadvertently discovered that my pricy purchase is good if I have to run fer the hills for 3 days to maybe a week in a temporary SHTF regional event where the grid will eventually come back. BUT - for long term TEOTWAWKI event, it just ain’t gonna last 😕.

There is nothing cheap about good down. Some people are couragious enough to make their own. This is an item you put in your vehicle when you travel in cold weather if you carry no other warm gear. Certainly you want hang it up or store it loose when you get home. That large foot box is great for keeping your feet warm.

$300 bucks!!! Too rich for my blood you can always get a king or queen size down blanket and make the same modifications yourself for a third of the price. It looks like a wonderful little sleep system but it's just too ridiculously expensive for my blood. And clearly it's not waterproof. And it's high maintenance too. I bought some of those sleeping shoes that are down from China. They are wonderful they keep your feet about the right temperature without getting hot in a variety of temperatures. That is until your stupid cat gets on you and lays across your feet. Then it turns into a dang oven
