Winter Camping on the Ice

Bringing the ice skates and the tent for an overnighter on the ice. The ice is 10cm over the lake, very strong. Snow fell during the night and covered the tent, and the ventilation, resulting in a lot of condensation inside in the morning. Tent is the Hilleberg Allak 2. Place is Kastfjärden in Västerbotten.

Eric if you cover your sleeping bag with a lightweight nylon poncho, the condensation lands on the poncho and doesn't get the bag wet. I almost froze to death from that when I was driving up the ALCAN Hwy. In 1974. I slept in the back of my VW micro bus. My bag got soaked. Fortunately I had stopped at a truck weigh station and they let me come in. Haines Junction Canada 🇨🇦

A great video as usual! As someone who has a Hilleberg Unna tent, I've used this in snowy winters here in Canada, and one thing I do to prevent snow from pressing down onto the vents is to ensure I guy line the tent, and tight enough to keep the tent from sagging with the weight of snow. I was considering getting an Allak 2, but might opt-in for the Staika. All in all, I enjoy your videos and look forward to every new one you put out. Thanks!

Erik, what is the solution for the condensation in this particular situation? Synthetic sleeping bag? You chose your camp in the lee of the forest at the edge of lake, where the prevailing winds would not affect you too much. Great to see the long skates. Fantastic experience bounding across a lake with those on your feet. I wonder if you are a hockey player. As always, thanks for sharing these extraordinary experiences. :) Cheers

Rick, good point. Down is fallible to moisture. A tarp or bivy would have been a better as it will not trap moisture.

The hunters over here always put tarps over their tents during the winter. I wonder if something like that could help prevent condensation if you rig it up where air can still vent through somehow. I wouldn't think a tarp would add too much more pack weight.

Your videos are like always, so peaceful and quiet, the train in the back is not a problem in my opinion at least. Have you ever had problems with your tent in heavy snowfall, the tent being flattened down too much? Have you tried a waterproof "liner"around the lower part of your sleeping bag, could just be a large garbage bag and it should just cover the footend maybe 60-70 cm or so. Thats the part most often touching the inner tent.
