That is absolutely true, preparation is the key to everything. It was a smart solution how you had placed the logs, so that both the wind came through and that it narrows at the end so that you could have the pot there. Very inspiring video.

i have used this fire starting technique ever since i first saw the video ( 2 years ago ) and its always worked perfectly with only need of 1 - 3 matches. this is the best survival tip video ive seen

When making a fire, it really doesn't mater which way the wind is blowing. The wind can change direction in a heartbeat.

Its good to see someone use a long fire. When truly trying to get warn or dry FAST, a long fire or two fires is the way to go. Love your vids.

Great stuff. 2 very convenient, but extremely important things you showed in this video: • Using a brace--so rookie knuckleheads don't smother their fire and extinguish it prematurely. • Using the wind direction to your advantage, creating a smoke-free cooking space. It's always nice to see outdoor/camping/bushcraft vids made by someone who actually knows WTF they're doing! Thank you, Sir. You've earned a new subscriber!

Great vid. Tried this today after watching last night. While i was cutting firewood i loaded large pieces on the fire,it lasted all day, boiled the kettle, made lunch and kept me plenty warm. Put some branches front and back of me and i used the wind like you suggested.Anyhow a great winter fire, very low maintenance, thanks so much for sharing.

Nice, TBar. That long fire SAVED my frozen biscuits several times last winter after you showed it to me. Thx, buddy.

I taught this type of fire to my son and his friends back in September. I set up some rotten, wet, decayed logs behind it as a fire reflector, and as a way to keep the fire smoldering in case it rained. I built them a lean-to in front of it, and made a browse bed for them to sleep on. They stayed out in 30 degree weather with just fleece bags and were warm and cozy all night.

Thnx for making a good, common sense w/ sound advice video...so many BS ones on youtube, that will put someone w/ little knowledge/experience in a rough or outright dangerous situation. Good job.

I wish I had found this video before. Our boyscouts troop went backpacking to Big South Fork this weekend. It was very cold and we had a very hard time trying to get a fire started. I'm trying this one on our next trip.

I also live in Iowa too. I got into backpacking about an year ago. Went once, and woke up to snow, that was different. I want to try winter camping yet. I like to build my fires on a platform. I never seen a long fire, but I like it. It was great advise. Thanks for the advise. Take care and happy camping. Still learning too.

Man I wish you still made videos. It’s soooo much work though. I certainly can see why you would stop. I’ve learned tons from you. In this case everyone has a different take on the long fire. Your take showed me that repositioning of the logs can provide a cooking platform. It’s a simple idea... after it’s been shown! 😉 I hope you’re well and having fun.

Thanks! not to often do I get good advice and tips on fire. I make a similar setup by digging a trench off my main fire to lay my wire on to cook, dragging coals from the main fire. In the winter this would be impossible, so now I have an alternative, thanks to you! ps, i'd use green logs for the two main fire walls, unless I wasn't going to do much cooking on it.

Well glad to see a home boy teaching the iwegins some bush craft tricks, i hope they watch and learn things that may save their lives one day, some feel that if S.H.T.F. THEY WILL just grab their family's , shot gun, and drive out to their favorite squirrel hunting area and find that cave they found some time back, set up they old family tent, pull out the ice chest, hang up the clothes line, have the kids pick some goose berries or black berries. maybe a few morels, pop the top on a cold one , ask the ole lady whens supper. YEA, YEA, YEA, of course I'm just making lite of the folks around IA. of who i lived around growing up in your beautiful state. Came from a family of hunters, trappers, fishers. Great place to grow up at least back then. Since then i have seen a big change in my old stomping grounds, i do hope that you all realize that troubled times are very close at hand and the midwest will be a part of it. Very happy to see your video today and like i said i hope folks learn and watch your videos , teach them well my friend, we all need to be able to live in the out of doors and live with out hard ware and HY- VEE stores to survive. OH , got to add i agree with the gorilla placing rocks in front of logs on long fire is a safe way to keep fire from rolling, especially at night when sound asleep. GOD BLESS AMERICA, and GOD BLESS all of you who chose to stay. TUCSON AZ.

I'm always looking for new creative ways to get a good fire going and i gotta say...i have not seen this method before. I like the idea behind it, and it seems that once you get it going its going to stay lit and roaring. My main concern with this style of fire, is that wind does not blow in one direction consistently. So i can definitely see this being a royal pain in the ass if the wind was blowing left to right or vise versa. But it appears it only matters in the beginning anyway. Nice video!

That's a nice lookin' fire. I usually wedge the big logs in with some rocks to make sure they don't roll. I'd like to try combining this v-shaped long fire with an elevated upside-down arrangement.

Outstanding video. I've gotten stagnant in my firemaking with my backyard brick lined pit, seems I'm perpetually making the classic log cabin firelay. I'm going to use the long firelay the next time I have the room to do so. FWIW I also have the same pulk sled as you, purchased at Menards for $30.
