Seems like it’s a overly exaggerated set, I assume they’re using mono mainline? If that is true, I would guess it is such an extreme Hook-set because they are using very light # test and That is very thin with lots of stretch... first time I ever caught a rock fish on light tackle I was “hooked” (HA fish pun) but I don’t get why a recreational boat would use mono mainline, I get why charters or guides that have multiple people fishing off the same boat with varying skill levels would , but it seems like they’re missing out on half of the sensation of the fight and therefore the whole point of using light tackle by using mono that stretches instead of using braid with A mono top shot or shock leader tied to the mainline giving you the best of both worlds (abrasion resistance & basically no stretch and no line drag) I know dogfish teeth are known to obliterate braided line. i’m sure they know better than I, I am genuinely curious what action rod with what type of mainline they are using and what is the logic behind their selection?!?

Rod, I have jigged for the same species you were targeting using the smaller sized Buzz Bombs and Point Wilson Darts. I caught two Dogfish that were over 15 pounds (one on a Dart, the other on herring). They were really hard fighters. I was fishing in the Port Washington Narrows near Bremerton. I learned that Dogfish are long lived, slow growing fish, so that the really big ones like I caught were probably over 40 years old. Some Salmon fishermen regard them as nuisance fish, and kill them. I always do catch and release with them, and enjoy catching them. A good flounder, however, I will eat.

Do you get those little white worms in the flounders some times ? I See them around Vancouver in some of the Fish I Catch from the shore using sand worms i get at low tides from under the rocks these little Guys can bite hard ,, i just use a sliding weight, the same gear as you would use for Trout using power bait , but sand worms instead ,I also catch Perch and Greenlings this way sometimes

Down here in the puget sound we throw a couple of old chicken legs and a salmon head or 2 you can get for cheap from ur local super market butcher. We leave em for the day or even overnight sometimes. Usually get 4 to 6 per pot but sometimes as many as 12.

those starry flounder really have a pungent odor to them...i never liked how they smell so you really have to keep them clean from their slime for best eating. We have no problem catching halibut which are better eating than flounder anyways.

You should be able to. Flound/sole fishing can be done year round. The fishing is generally better in the summer but they are still around in the winter too.

Thanks, Rod. Your video is great as always! Were you using barbless hooks? Rod, why didn't you try to take the hook from the fish? the one that swallowed it. I think fish with a hook in it's throat is doomed
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 лет назад
+Eugene Malyuta Thanks. We usually stick with barbless hook, whether it is required by law or not. Generally, its chance of survival is better if you simply cut the line rather than trying to force the hook out, which would cause more bleeding. That hook, especially in saltwater, would have rusted within days. The fish can usually still feed while the hook is lodged in the throat. Sometimes the hook, weight etc even pass through the system. I've caught trout with a line from its mouth to the anus, and a hook attached to the rear end of the line.

The daily quota of flounder in the area where we were fishing can be found on this page: www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tidal-maree/a-s28-eng.html To find out the daily quota in a specific area, just go to DFO's tidal water fishing regulations website, click on the area where you intend to fish, and click on the tab "other finfish" and it should take you to the information that you are looking for.

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 лет назад
+BLifted 604 Great! Welcome! :) Generally, these flounder and any flatfish species are more active in the summer time, so you're more likely to catch them from a pier between May and September, than the winter months.

Rod I go to rice lake a lot For winter trout fishing and I always end up getting skunked even when they have stocked the lake 3 days before. I have tried the dock and other places along the loop trail and still nothing. Any suggestions? I fly fish and spin fish. Also what would be a good bait if I was to float fish. Thanks
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 лет назад
skate446 For float fishing, the bait which I personally like to stick to are either deli shrimp/krill which have been cured in Pautzke Bait FireCure, or their Balls O' Fire single eggs. These on a size 4 hook have worked well for me. Try different depths, different distance from shore, different time of the day. Good luck!

Hey rod, I was wondering if I can catch dogfish or flounder with clams from a beach. Because next month I'm going to parksville.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 лет назад
Both dogfish and flounder can be found in pretty shallow water, especially in the summer so yes you can certainly catch these. Best to do it from the pier than from a beach. Clams should work well for flounder. For dogfish, squid or fish pieces work better. Parksville is a lovely place to spend the holiday, have a great time!

@eryman17
@eryman17 9 лет назад
this is kindof un related rod but do you have any tips for targeting sockeye? the skagit river opens for a month starting tomorrow.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 лет назад
wyatt guttormsen Unlike what most believe, sockeye salmon will take bait and sometimes artificial lures and flies if the water is reasonably clear. Early morning before sunrise and late in the afternoon in the shade are the best times for targeting them. Once the sun hits the water, the bite generally stops. I like to float fish with either krill or deli shrimp for them. The takes are often very light, so downsize your float as much as possible without disrupting the drift.
@eryman17
@eryman17 9 лет назад
***** thats what i was thinking about trying but every looks at me crazy when i mention trying it lol but what do you mean use krill as bait, as a scent? but thanks for the info im hoping to have some luck this weekend or next.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 лет назад
wyatt guttormsen Krill as in the tiny shrimp you can buy in frozen packs from either a fishing tackle store or a pet store. Use a size 4 hook to thread the krill on. Make sure they are cured first with Pautzke Bait FireCure to stiffen them up so they'll stay on the hook longer.
