Those are called Islander reels, they are made on Vancouver Island BC. If you Google "Islander mooching reels", you should be able to find them. Good luck!

Thanks! The audio and music are probably the hardest part of getting these video features done. They can change the feel of the video so easily.

That is a flasher, which is used to attract fish to your bait by its movement and flashes while travelling in the water. Take a look at the video "How to Fish: Salmon Trolling Essentials" and you will see those flashers more closely. No such thing as a stupid question. ;)

for stocked rainbows in the lake most people use floating egg or paste with small hooks( Fl. Yellow or Fl.organge or Pink color) and you have to use light line(4ib) and small hook and sinker which will stay on the lake floor and the bait will float one to two meter above and best chance if you use fluorocarbon line( from sinker to hook portion) and rest of the method he explained above and he made some videos how to rig and fish in the lake and stream

The grass is always greener on the other side. ;) I used to live and fish in Australia and there are fisheries that I enjoyed very much (snapper, whiting, travally). If you want to try salmon and trout fishing, this is definitely the place to be but for a large diversity of saltwater species to fish for, Australia is definitely better.

No, those are mooching reels. They are fairly similar to fly reels and centerpin reels, with a one to one gear ratio, but there is also a drag that can be applied to them. Please look up "Islander MR3" for more information.

The ocean is big, and deep, so these fish can be anywhere, at any depth, depending on where their feed is. The guide usually has an idea where they might be, based on catches from past years and other clues. I'm sure on very good days a few hook-ups per hour is always possible. For this particular fishery, we had a great day considering most boats did not catch anything.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 11 лет назад
It depends on what type of fishing you wish to do. If you want to cast and retrieve a lure, a spinning rod around 8 or 9' long, rated 8 to 12lb and can cast up to 1/2oz of weight is good. If you want to float fish, a 10'6" baitcasting or centerpin rod, rated 8 to 12/15lb is a good option. Check out Shimano Clarus, which have models in these specs.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 12 лет назад
It depends on the time of the year and how far the trip is from Vancouver, this particular charter offers season specials and packages. The crabbing is always included in the trip (unless it is not too productive, Between April and June is always a good bet).

Thanks! I don't remember what brand those rods were as they were the guide's, but mooching rods rated between 15-25lb, or 20-30lb should be good for this type of fishery as we were running 25lb test line. Shimano makes pretty good mooching rods, so does a local brand in Vancouver called Trophy XL.

Our winter chinook salmon fishing and crabbing feature just reached 100k views! :) Thanks for watching. This particular video features the fishing opportunities which are available right now just outside of Downtown Vancouver. The next few months should be pretty awesome, so be sure to give Bon Chovy Fishing Charters a call if you are in the area and want to give it a go.

For dungeness crab in British Columbia, the minimum length of the widest part of the carapace is 165mm or 6.5 inches.

There isn't a bait ban throughout the summer months on the Fraser River, usually. A bait ban is usually implemented by DFO in September and part of October to protect the endangered interior coho salmon and steelhead. When there is a bait ban, bar fishing is no longer so useful. It's best just to switch to casting and retrieving spoons and spinners. If you are fishing between Hope and Chilliwack, you can still bar fish with a spin n' glow, which spins in the current and attracts fish.

A charter trip like the one we did in this video (five hours, just outside of Downtown Vancouver for salmon trolling and crabbing) can vary from $100 - $250 per person, depending on how many people on the boat. This particular charter had a winter special earlier this year, which was $409 for four people (tax and licence not included) for five hours of fishing, which is the best deal you'll find in this area.

Do a search for "rainbow trout" on our RU-vid channel and website, you'll come up with tons of content on bait for rainbow trout fishing. Check out the video feature "Float, egg, trout!" from last month, which demonstrates how to catch rainbows with natural single eggs. There will also be a couple of other video features coming up later this year on rainbow trout bait. :)

My guess is they're using a Canon 7D or T3i. Great look with these cameras and really professional look. Awesome job Rod & Nina!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 11 лет назад
Those rods are just fine. They're bent to the butt while sitting in the rod holder since there are a couple of 20lb cannonballs hanging at the end of the lines.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 12 лет назад
Ya, the line was still in the clipper of the downrigger so I had to yank it hard to get it out. My mistake was that I did not reel down before yanking, so there was too much slack in the line and it wouldn't come off the clipper. Rookie mistake.

At 9:36 he clipped it onto the line. All i know is that it takes the bait or something down, but i don't know how it works. Sorry i've never fished on a boat. Only bank fishing. Sorry if i sound stupid.

The city is literally right behind us, less than 10km. We couldn't get a better video of it because it was actually raining most of the time. :) No videos from Denmark anytime soon, but we'll keep trying. ;)

Nice. I'm usually hesitant to fish in busy harbours like that but you pulled some clean fish there. I was raised across the channel in nanaimo so might be giving this guy a shout in the near future if he's still doing this. Did he mention what he charged for something like what you guys did in the video?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 7 лет назад
Definitely. Most of the fishing is actually done further away from the big ships, in Howe Sound, in front of Bowen, Fraser River mouth etc. :) How much the charters are depends on the time of the year. In the winter months from January to March there is a winter special, which is quite a bit cheaper than the summer rates of course. Jason has all the info on bonchovy.com

Are you allowed to use spears for fishing? Me and some friends are going to make a video when the salmon are done spawning, when they are just about to die. Is it legal to spear fish with harpoons and 4 pronged fish spears?

We were keeping those fish, so the most humane way is to kill them immediately instead of letting them sitting in the cooler slowly suffocate to death. In fact, in British Columbia you are required to kill the fish you want to keep immediately by law.

Hey Rod! I'm currently wondering what's a good fishery to go for during the month of June? I chatted up Steve from First Light Fishing per your recommendation and he suggested Pikeminnow but they're a bit undersized and somewhat difficult to catch due to freshet. What would you be fishing for around this season that's a decent size? Thanks!
