Pulled my honey supers and started feeding 1:1 syrup here in Alabama. Do I feed pollen patties now or when?

I'm a new beekeeper. Will the bees eat the plain sugar?
@RobinPoe
@RobinPoe 3 года назад
I'm planning on being a hobbyist beekeeper. I live in the Pacific Northwest, where the winters are long, cold, and wet. The money in bees here is in pollination. Even hobbyists can make some good money bringing their hives to the orchards, vineyards, and berry patches. Pollination season can often be very cold in early spring, so the bees need to come out of the hives, all charged up and ready to go. It seems like the folk here use method 3 with the sugar in a big, dry top feeder. Would that be the best method, or do I need to roll out a bunch of those gooey bee cookies?
@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply 3 года назад
Hey Robin, I'd suggest using solid patties in that sort of environment. Lots of nutrients in there that they may not otherwise get with sugar. Thanks for asking! Good luck!

Hello John I have pulled my old honey/ sugar syrup out of my frames earlier this year to feed later on so I do not have to purchase as much sugar to make syrup. What is the best mixture to mix it or is it better to feed it back just like it is . I know it will be different in different seasons. I have never fed back my syrup/ honey. I have always purchased sugar to make my syrup. As always thanks for all your information.

Hey there, Kathy! I would cut the honey down by adding water, at the same ratio as sugar cup of water maybe a little thinner if you like. Be sure to feed inside or under cover with feeders, you don't want to start robbing. #RTBBF Thanks for asking!

I’ve got a swarm that came in, a week or so ago. What should I do to help them establish themselves???
@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply 2 года назад
If you have frames that are already combed out, that's a great place to start. And always give them a couple rounds of syrup or until they hit a nectar flow. Pollen substitute will also help build brood. Good luck and thanks for the question. #RTBBF

First time using this product. "Pro winter" It's been on inner cover about two weeks. I checked it the other day & found maybe 12 dead bees. O no what went wrong?
@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply 2 года назад
No need for alarm, bees age out and pass away during day to day operation. Couple other things could happen, bees got too deep into feed and became coated as other bees continued feed on top of them. It's still a better alternative than placing feed directly on frames and it gets warm running down over bees and brood. I don't recommend you place more than a 1/2 to a # at one feed and try to keep it all to one side of vent hole. Thanks for watching!

@@CentralBeekeepersSupply i put dry sugar on three of them and opened them. They are the weakest one of them is doing okay it was a swarm catch that i vacuumed out of a house as for the other two i think they went in tort. I liked the way you put feed on with out totally opening up the hive maybe if i would have thought about how to put feed on but was more worried about them not having any thing. I will remember your video and watch it a few more times but lets just say i learned as of now i went in to winter with ten hives and i rather sure i will have seven in april and here in southern york pa we are to get some 50 degree weather in a week or so as of now we have 20 degree weather and snow if we get a blessed few days of 50 the bees can get a cleaning flights the temps now and snow and frozen ground is also a plus in hopes of knocking down beetle larva in the ground and knocking down mite problem. Your video was great yes being three yrs in to bee keeping this will be the first that i gotten bees threw winter and the next time i need to feed in winter i will remember how to with out opening the hive Ty for teaching god bless

Hey James, thanks for the comment! I would assume that you could use this same method in Massachusetts, but I've never tried to raise bees there so I can't say for sure. What are the normal temps like in the winter?

I have a few disagreements with you. Saying that, if it works for you, keep it up. Try placing a few ice-cream sticks between the top and inner cover to help the ventilation and stop the mold. Don't worry about lost of heat.

Why didnt you manage your harvest to leave the correct amount of good nectar honey that they would need for winter? I did not feed anything for 5 or 6 years. fed some last spring because it was too warm and they flew too much and wasted energy. Who fed the bees every winter fo the last 30 million years ?
@thepitpatrol

Carol this video wasn't directed at you it was directed at the other 4 million beekeepers like myself that aren't as good a manager as you.

Hey Carol! Thanks for the comment. Here in Arkansas the temperature is a bit warmer than it is in most other parts of the country during winter. So much warmer in fact that our bees typically forage actively in January and February. When they come back empty-handed, they're hungry! So they devour their winter stores faster than they would if they were in a colder environment. We supplement their food supply so they don't have to work as hard, and they don't have to go hungry. Could they make it without our intervention? Absolutely. But if there's a small thing we can do to give our little pals a hand, we're going to help them. I feel like we can all agree that they're one of the most important parts of our ecosystem, so why wouldn't we make it easier on them? Thanks for watching! 🐝
