Gloriously chilled flight on 4 January 22 running along the most interesting part of HW - from a scenic point of view at least. Fourteen miles of wall which are a joy to walk but with much better sense of scale from above. Think how lonely a posting milecastle 35 must have felt at times.
The light snow helps reveal what remains, including the four forts, fourteen visible milecastles, the military way running, mostly, close to the wall, and of course the vallum. It also reveals at least fifteen camps - practice or construction - on both sides of the wall, as well as other earthworks.
Flight begins at Carvoran (raised platform only diagonally below Roman Army Museum in the trees) , passes Great Chesters, Housesteads, and Carrawburgh, before closing with a brief fly along the Stanegate and Vindolanda, along with a couple of stills.
