A Healthy mature Lychee tree can take several degrees of frost. But young trees will benefit from some sort of protection the first year in the ground.

Great tip Jeff. I have a huge patio umbrella unfortunately it's just not weather proof enough to cope with the high winds and adverse weather we get most of winter so I have to keep it folded and covered 😁

Maybe just put it up when hard freeze is predicted?

Thank Ryan. I planted my lychee plant two years ago. The foliage is a quater of yours. The temperature in my place drops to -2 to -3 degrees celcius. I havent seen new branches developing or any fruiting yet in the tree. Yet at the time I bought it from nursery it seemed to have flowers and little fruits which dropped. What am I doing wrong. I had added organic manure everytime. Out of frustration I this time added little Potash and sprayed some fertilizer 3 days ago. Any clue as to what I could be doing wrong or what I must do to improve my chances of success this season

Hard to say exactly, but mine doesn’t like any nitrogen fertilizer and soil to be on the acidic side

I’ve lychee trees that I brought from Indonesia to Cairo, Egypt in February. They have retained some of their leaves and dropped some. We’re in Spring time now and they’re still not growing new leaves. When do they usually start new foliage growth? I assume mine got a shock for being transplanted from a strictly tropical climate to a subtropical cold winter.

@@TropicalGardenGuy They have dropped most of their leaves and still no new growth even though it’s spring and it’s warm now… what could be wrong?

Don't got an umbrella and need to protect a first year avocado in CA central coast 9b, protected from northern wind but thinking about coming up with a roof solution above it since it's 6' tall 2-3' round so a little too big for a blanket. Any tips? Canvas? Plastic? Would float it a foot or two above the terminal bud. I've never been able to overwinter an avocado but previous planting spots have been open air on all sides. Thanks!

Sorry all I ever did was use umbrella.

My lychee tree grew some new leaves before winter. Now these new red leaves are all burned

Yea those new leaves are very tender. I sometimes cut them off in fall

Jeff, would you recommend watering with warm water (80-90F) during this cold snap? I haven't watered any of my citrus or avocado for a few weeks and they are due. We are expected to get as low as 25F by Thursday night.

Not sure about that. Maybe 70f water?
