Winter Hot Tent Camping in a Snowtrekker crew. Join Ashley, myself (Keenan) and our two dogs as we try our new Snowtrekker tent for the first time. We hike through a beautiful snowy forest, with our toboggans loaded up and find a perfect place to set up our Snowtrekker. It was a cold and snowy winter's day, which made it all the more enjoyable.
We also had to burn in our new Kni co stove, which would keep us warm and heat our tent all night long. Gathering and processing wood was made a lot quicker, as we brought (I believe) the world's lightest rear handle chainsaw, weighing just over 5lbs. Mulled wine, steak, baked potato and bacon all cooked up on the stove. What a perfect way to enjoy the winter.
Be sure to like, subscribe, and share if you enjoy this video! Plenty more to come!

I bought myself the exact same 14" chainsaw for Christmas with the same intentions in mind. The days are short enough when out there camping in winter, who wants to spend it all cutting wood when you can be exploring or ice fishing!! Awesome video guys!!

Great video! Snowtrekkers are great tents. One tip for easier setup is to remove the bottom segment of the 4 corner poles so that the ridge pole is lower. Makes it easier to toss the tent over the frame.

@@CanoeTheNorth I thank you so much for your response. I love to write in many forms. I fail miserably in correct words for writing, like are, our, to too pronouns adjectives conjunctions in sentence structure. I never had proper language art taught to me in my young age of school as my dad's work changed so much we moved 13 times before I was in 6th grade. So my friends often say it's best you keep your writings private. Well at 59 now I decided God has blessed my mind to be creative I shall put a little out there and see what others think. So my heart was so happy to read your response. I thank you kindly. I truly do enjoy your video's and the real essence of two beautiful people and two loveable dogs. May your travels and adventures be safe for years to come. PS: I do write stories about my chickens and everyday life happenings on the farm. You just might get a few clucks from them. 😊

I see so many bushcrafters using their Agawa Canyon Boreal hand saws to cut wood. I think your idea of a small chain saw is the way to go. One or two litres of gas and some chain oil and you can cut a lot of wood real quick. Even the battery electric saws seem pretty good. Your wife Ashley is a trooper...sounds like she may be British perhaps. Nice tent and wood stove.

So I've spent a lot of time personally and professionally with chainsaws and axes. I normally try not to be the guy with unsolicited "you should do X this way" comments, but I noticed you have a lot of great safety habits--always using the chain brake between cuts, kneeling with a small axe, batoning, etc--so I think you might appreciate a safety tip. One suggestion I have is that when you're walking with the chainsaw, carry it with the bar facing behind you. Even with the scabbard covering the bar, if you carry it forward and trip & fall, there is a chance you could cut yourself on the chain very badly whereas carrying it "backwards" keeps the chain behind you if you fall.
@CanoeTheNorth
@CanoeTheNorth 2 года назад
Ahhhh.... I don't mind safety tips at all. I actually always like to hear stuff like that. If it helps keep me safe in the bush its ok with me. Thanks for the tip!

Our tent was made of heavy weave but very flexible canvas. Not waterproof. it needed to breath. A light nylon ,not plastic tarp for mid winter thaws in case of rain. That happened only once. Chose to make the tent half a wall tent design. Rope on each front corner stretch between two trees. 2 ropes on back corners to trees. Snow shoes packed the two feet of snow under the tent. stove very much like yours with a hole cut in the top near the front. Always covered by a pot melting snow to drink when not cooking. Stove pipe was telescoping so it folded into one piece that fit in the stove. Light piece of metal under stove to thaw meat before cooking. Spruce boughs cut for sleeping platform covered by light canvas. Blue foam pads and two caribou hides with hair on those. Half stick of butter per person in the evening meal especially at -40 C/F. T-shirt weather in tent while cooking and eating. Could carry a little more than ten days of food for two people and 10 to 12 dogs on the two sleds. Hand saws. Not chainsaws.

@CanoeTheNorth
@CanoeTheNorth 2 года назад
Ya....this is all new to us so it was a learning experience. The floor did melt where it was open. Where there was wood, our sleeping pads, our gear there was enough insulation to stop most of the melting. Where we were going in and out of the tent and the melting was occurring it started to get a little muddy so we added the boughs. Next time I would add the boughs right after setup. Hope that helps!

Those snowtrekker tents look nice. I decided to sew my own pyramid hot tent and went with a seek outside titanium stove for the weight. Now the wife wants to winter camp too so I may need a larger tent for her and the kids. How does the toboggan handle? I’ve thought about getting one but am concerned one would handle poorly on trails that aren’t flat since I do a lot of my camping in the Adirondack mountains.
@CanoeTheNorth
@CanoeTheNorth 2 года назад
Hey Jonathan. That’s impressive that you made your own tent ⛺️. Well done. I’m sure that took some time and effort to build. As far as the toboggan we love ours. It worked very well for the types of trips we are planning. I’m not 100% sure how it would do on a more mountainous style trip. We are far from experts in the winter camping world but I would imagine a setup like the ski pulks might work better for the descending portion of the trips. For our intended use (frozen lakes and some portage trails) these are perfect.

I wonder if the stove would do better at the rear of the tent. Kinda wish had two jacks.

I’m sure the people at snowtrekker could do that for you if you asked them. Great tents 🏕️.

Thanks Ace coast! We were not to far from Algonquin. Not much snow in the city then eh.

What size stove jack were you using? I have a 3" one and I cannot get the stovepipe with the proper diameter.

Our stove pipe and jack are 5”. Might almost be worth replacing the stove jack with a 4” or 5” one to make finding a stove a little easier. I wonder if seek outside might make a stove that could work for you?

Too late at night to really comment. This was strange. My sister and I spent about 20 years with dog teams camping in Alaska. I'll talk about that tomorrow.

Great video…watching other channels I wonder how much energy and time it takes to process firewood. Small chain makes sense to me. What kind of dog is Betty Lou by the way?

Thanks very much Jason. Betty Lou is a cattle dog 🐕. It definitely takes time to gather and process firewood. And even longer when your trying to film everything. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks again.

Good to serve mulled wine (in Danish Gløgg) on a cold day Try white mulled wine with white wine or elderflower juice.

That sounds good too. We will have to try that one trip. I’ve never heard of white mulled wine 🍷.

@@CanoeTheNorth Try searching "hvid glögg" on youtube. Not all videos are translated, however, think you understand the recipe. Personally I make on apple juice, cloves, cardamom, whole cinnamon, star anise, whole black pepper, citrus fruit and some sweetness (syrup, sugar ect) Let it simmer for a long time. serve in a cup, with apple pieces, dried berries. You can add vodka in for extra kick 😉
