NCWF hosts Kendall Smith, the Lake Mattamuskeet Refuge Manager for a presentation on the history of the the Lake Mattamuskeet area and the formation of the wildlife refuge in the 1930s, some current challenges being faced and how you can enjoy your time during a visit to Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. Kendall Smith has served as the Refuge Manager of Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge since March of 2020.
A homecoming of sorts, he was introduced to the refuge as an intern leading a crew of Youth Conservation Corps participants during the summer of 1996. He has enjoyed a career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since graduating from North Carolina State University in 1999. He has worked at Lower Suwannee and Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuges, and as a biologist for the agency's private lands program in eastern North Carolina. He will be sharing some of the history of Lake Mattamuskeet area including the formation of a wildlife refuge in the 1930s, some of the current challenges, and ways you can enjoy your time during a visit.
