The Japanese Maple Gardening year: February signs of spring
A revisit of my Japanese maples to see how they have done over winter. Die back / feeding are discussed as well as the seedlings and young grafted trees bought last year. There is also an update on the new grafted maples I did a month or so ago to review their progress.
Thanks again to the folk at www.barthelemymaples.co.uk for their advice!
Ideal for beginners or more experienced Japanese Maple growers, in these videos I will show what practical steps I take to keep my Acer trees healthy during a year of gardening!
I hope you will follow me in my adventures with these wonderful trees
This video will help you grow better trees and for those with more experience, who want to improve the autumn colour, health and general quality of their Maples. Colour can also be improved all year by giving trees the right amount of sun.
This video is about:
Fall colors, Japanese acer, Japanese acer care, Japanese acer in pots, Japanese acer leaves curling, Japanese acer maple tree, Japanese acer scorched leaves, Japanese acer tree, Japanese acer uk, Japanese maple, Japanese maples care, Japanese maples in containers, Japanese maples in pots, Japanese maples varieties, Maples, acer, autumn, fall colors, fall foliage, garden, garden answer, garden tour, gardening, maple, shrubs, Japanese maple care, autumn ambience

Loved the trees. Could you please share the names of the few specialised nurseries as there's hardly any in Scotland

The only one I know that mail orders in the UK mainland is www.barthelemymaples.co.uk .They are based in Dorset but their mail order stuff is really well packaged, feel free to mention my channel to them as I like promoting small growers, there are not many left!

Thanks Carl. I've been finding the seasonal videos really useful. Could you recommend an upright/narrow cultivar for a shady spot? Not total shade but it gets no more than 2-3 hours of morning sun in the summer.
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 5 месяцев назад
Hi, most Acers will be fine but the red leafed ones will loose their colour without sun. My choice would be Okushimo for its upright habit.

@@Japanesemaples thank you! I had been thinking about ukigumo but heard the variegation is a bit inconsistent. I like the idea of an unusual leaf like Okushimo. Cheers

Welcome to spring :) Carl would you recommend pruning off any branches which are crossing/rubbing, and when would the best time be to do that? Thanks
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 5 месяцев назад
Great question and I guess it’s down to preference. If you prune them I would say now is perfect timing in the UK as 1. You can see the branches clearly 2. The tree is about to go through a growth spurt and will heal quickly 3.The new leaves will hide the cut Hope that helps! Carl

Hi - thank you for sharing. What was the name of the nursery on the video please? Interested in some of the ornaments that have been- thanks
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 5 месяцев назад
The Nursery was Melbicks in the midlands, I guess that have multiple branches in the UK.

Awasome content. I just ordered the seeds of Japanese maple. I am worried that where I live in, it's hot ( Kolkata, India), it may ruin the plants. Do you think it's possible to grow the tree in such hot weather? Any suggestions?
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 5 месяцев назад
It’s not so much heat as such, but heat with drying winds & direct sunlight that’s the problem. Keep them in shade most of the time, especially midday, water loads and definitely avoid windy conditions!

My Katsura completely caught me out this year. I wanted to repot it and get it ready for a Bonsai pot, but I've missed the window, the leaves are nearly fully open 😂 Oops 😂

1:52 Surely all those overtall saplings are badly rootbound, given how small the pots are ? 🤔
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 5 месяцев назад
True and I bet would react well to a larger pot and new compost 👍
@RovingPunster
@RovingPunster 5 месяцев назад
@@Japanesemaples Ah, but that IS the issue about them being rootbound ... it can (depending on severity) permanently impair their ability to "react well" to a too long overdue up-potting.
