Can you guys do a beginner series showing example of everything. Like how to pot up a Japanese maple and show how you do it. I’m a beginner and sometimes you guys talk about stuff, but I don’t know how to go about doing it myself

Just had this happen to a large laceleaf I had in a pot. The wind blew the pot over and I was out of town. Plant defoliated but is now on its way to recovering. Very good information to help a plant recover.

I was sure my leaves were dropping because of pests. The tree does have tiny pests under the leaves but not as bad as you might expect for leaves to drop so now I’m sure I haven’t been watering it properly. Thank you. And I’m glad I didn’t pull the leaves. I watered it good the other day and haven’t over watered so I’m hoping I’ll get new growth this year. Thank you

Yeah me too I am in the same area. I put a shade fabric to reduce the sun 40%. I brought it in Amazon and water two times. Under the shade fabric the plants stay green yesterday I put one out of the shade and burned the leaves in an hour. I just cross my fingers because it’s like an oven outside.

Just the content I was looking for. I bought some Japanese maples last year and left them in burlap over the winter. They struggled a bit as they were in burlap and dried out pretty bad when we were on vacation. I planted them in the late spring this year and saw some good growth. But as summer went on the heat stressed them a bit. They are over 200 feet from my water supply at the top of my driveway….. a lot of hose dragging…. Some of the tips of branches have dried and receded in places. Not everywhere but some. I planted five trees. :-) I’m in southwest Pennsylvania and it’s currently September 6th, 2022. Is it too late to liquid fertilize? We often see our first snow by Halloween and frosts sooner. Also specifically what liquid fertilizer do you suggest? Just miracle grow for tomatoes and garden plants?

This is happening to mine. I bought it yesterday, and watered it. The leaves started to dry out. I think it is rootbound because I bought it at the tail end of the season (nearly September). I am going to re-pot it and water it with a little liquid fertilzer.

Great video and info. I employ liquid fertilizer when appropriate, but I also use granular, and I simply put it in empty tea bags. That way, I can remove that fertilizer when I want without leaving residual fertilizer in the pots. This is done routinely by Bonsai artists.

Great advice there Tim! Here in the UK we had two bouts of fierce heat weather fronts which lasted several weeks with very warm winds. Despite daily watering my JMs, which are all in large pots btw, some of my JMs did suffer and result in crispy leaves. Particularly my large Osakazuki and a fairly young Atropurpureum Acer. The latter dropped off all of its leaves by mid July and I had just left it be but continued watering as normal. By mid August the same plant burst into life showing intense red leaves which stood out - far better than that when I had first bought the Acer a year prior. My suffering Osakazuki on the other hand has a leaf canopy that looks like frazzled bacon and all I can do is hope that future Summer Seasons are more stable in temperatures and warm winds. Fascinating to hear that you use Miracle Grow liquid feed on your JMs. I’ve just been using 1/2 strength (20ml/9ltr watering can) of Tomorite, which is a Tomato based liquid feed and I cease using this by the end of July. Hard to tell if Tomorite makes much of a noticeable difference but as I feed a 30 year old Pyracantha Shrub the same feed - that I do know makes a difference! Always looking forward to the videos!

I also live in SW UK ,we've had our red JM for 25 years in a large pot and never had to do anything with it once we found that sweet spot in the garden, when we had that leat frost this year the leaves did shrivel a bit but she came back ,then we had that hot spell and high winds followed by a moth of rain ,and I've just lost all the leaves as they have all gone crispy brown ,just wondering if its now pot bound as she's 6 foot tall ,never had to touch her in 25 years ,this year I did giver her a palm full of acer feed ,there's so many ppl saying do this do that ,some say I can repot it now and some say leave until end of summer ????? Help ,my other 3 JM are OK but they are only 12 months old

Awesome video, thanks! I've also had luck with full and partial defoliation as well after watching a few bonsai experts. I thought leaving burnt leaves on would be wasting energy for the rest of the tree, but I'm happy to try your way! Do you guys have any opinions on using kelp solutions when planting or transplanting? Hope day 2 of open house was a good one for you guys!

Hi, I use a small application of Rootmax Mycorrhizal powder as part of the potting/ re-potting process. I bought this rooting powder off Amazon. I have noticed that my re-potted JMs seem to “settle in” far sooner and show new leaf growth. Hope that helps!

Hey guys I’m in the same zone as you all being in Black Mountain. There’s some high 30’s in mid October. I had this happen to my Katsura Hime with all the others around it doing well, but it’s on a sloped hill. So it seems to have not gotten enough water and too much sun for it’s first year (larger 2 gallon) planted in the ground. Should I hit it with liquid fertilizer (going to soak happy frog for a day)? Or is it getting too late in the year and will I get lucky if I have it potentially go dormant (probably way too early for that)? Thanks! #japanesemaples

@@MrMapleShow Thank you! It's been outside all summer and the leaves are getting brown tips. We've had quite a bit of rain, some hot days, and very cool nights so I'm not sure what's more harmful, the sun or the wet soil in the pot or both. I'm trying to get the soil to dry out now. My other plants on the deck seem to enjoy the strange summer weather (a young fig, fiddle leaf fig [about 2 yrs old], and a citrus seedling).

I received 2 maples a week ago. One seems to dry out faster than the other. I water accordingly. Both trees, the leaves look dry and shriveled and not really changing to fall colors. If the leaves fall off without changing color is this normal? Just don't want them to die.

Bonsai people do this with a goal in mind. It's a method to reduce the size of the leaves wich is desirable in Bosnia. To bring the bonsai tree into aesthetic balance. Have fun.😊😊😊😊
