Kelly, I love winter nymphing. People are sitting at home, they are not up listening like we would, hearing the snow hiss as it lands. I love it because sometimes you can access water, you will never reach the bottom of and you can walk along the shelves. I think it is a bit surprising to the fish. Due to health reasons I am not sure ki will ever fish again. It is a tough row to hoe. I'm trying to decide if I will continue to tie flies now, that gives me some happiness. Thanks for your tying instructions, you are appreciated, every day!

Kelly, I loved the video. This fits the hole in my fly box last time I was dry fly fishing for picky brows the were refusing the #18 EP Caddis I tied but we’re still taking unseen bugs (assumed midges) off the surface. I tied up a half dozen. It is difficult to ensure each wing is the same size. I have a name for this pattern - the Drunken Mickey Midge. 😂

Nice twist on a midge pattern. I started using the Airflo poly leaders this spring for my trout Spey set up in both sinking and floating they worked great , also used them on my steelhead and salmon Spey set ups then changed on all my single hand rods to them . Easy name for your new fly , since Jonny was your inspiration to tie it , it should be the “talking Jonny “ it never stops catching fish :-) thanks for the video and Merry Christmas and happy new year’s.

Hi Kelly do you ever get back to the glove aka MI to fish and what waters did you fish there I have family in traverse city and likely going to make a trip there.. I know this question is out of context but you made a name there... Montana has just been overflooded with transplants and on the west side of the state there is no resemblance anymore and our water is so overcrowded its unenjoyable and I am branching out on the time I have off in Missoula... anyways sorry for the rant Merry Christmas

Kelly, nice video! A couple of questions: I'm not sure I see what the advantage is, for using the floating poly leader versus a tapered monofilament (nylon) leader? Does the poly leader float better than a conventional monofilament tapered leader? Are there various weights of the poly leader that correspond to the fly line weight that you are using, for example a 4 weight versus 6 weight fly line?
@paigeloomis
@paigeloomis 9 месяцев назад
I’ve been using floating airflo poly leaders for many years. The energy transfer is awesome. It’s almost like an extension of the fly line and so they work amazing for dry dropper, even with a 3 wt. These poly leaders are only for dry and dry dropper in my opinion. I don’t think you should ever put an indicator on the butt sections of these leaders.
@Detroit3Pistons

@@paigeloomisIs it basically just a clear section so the fish can’t see your actual fly line?

Thanks for the video. May I ask what the purpose of a floating poly leader versus regular leader? I understand a sinking poly leader with a floating line.
@realityobservationalist7290
It's really supple and it's clear. So you get a bit of an extra buffer of non-colored line between your fly and the fly line. It's great for small flies and delicate presentations. Because it's supple, it won't turn over bigger flies as well. That's my opinion at least.
@clysher
@clysher Год назад
The supple nature of the polyleader is on par with furled leaders, and casts smoother than hand-tied leaders. Since they are made like fly line they are durable as well. For beginners I recommend the regular polyleader, not the plus.

Do you not cut the loop on your fly line?
@TheSlideinn
@TheSlideinn Год назад
A, I used to cut them off but don't anymore. I cut them off in the old days because they failed on me. I have not seen one fail in years including on my sinking lines where I use much heavier tippet than you would ever use nymphing or on dries. the only down side I can see with loop to loop is they pick up a little more water at the loop knot than a good nail knot does. Kelly

Cortland ultra premium, nice. Everyone take note, I've tested that Cortland and it's the best. No BS, I use 5x at lando and catch 20 inchers without retying and have full confidence. Outside of abrasion from rocks there's no need to retie. I also use a loop knot, even on size 20s, it's a game changer. Just learn to tie the loop knot as tiny as possible and you'll never have a fish shake your knot loose again. Bent rods ✌️ 🏔️

I’ve won national championships and fished the world over. I’m 73 now and with arthritis I don’t fish anymore. But if you want to cast, I can still beat most of them. I’ve fly cast 315 double handed, and 215 single handed. I’ve fished Australia , Alaska and Mexico extensively. I hope your fishing life works out as well as mine!
