I’m making a summit camp in the Fannich range, which includes a couple of the Northwest Highlands highest mountains. Being January, the days are short and the nights are long and cold, but magical weather conditions make for some incredible dawn photography on the summit of Beinn Mor Fannich.

About Me:
Hi and thanks for checking out my videos! I’m Feargus Cooney, a photographer and amateur explorer who has been disappearing into the wilderness for most of my life. It’s my passion and my salvation from the stresses of everyday life.
The main aim of my excursions/expeditions is to explore the relatively (and occasionally completely) unknown if I can - to get off the beaten path in some way and bring back photography of nature and wilderness.
I’ve been filming my adventures since 1999, though am only a recent addition to using RU-vid as a way of getting the experiences out there. During the COVID-19 pandemic my wife and I made the decision it was time to escape the stress of living far from any real wilderness and moved to northern Scotland, and that’s where most of these videos take place. It’s not as pure and unspoilt as some wilderness areas around the world but it can certainly be remote and wild. I also head off into more ‘pure’ wilderness around the world once or twice a year, and will occasionally add videos from my archive of trips I did in the past where the quality is high enough.
Scotland has made a world of difference to my mental health. The space - and right - to roam here, along with a healthier attitude to freedom of access to nature than I’ve come across in most places I’ve lived has made entering this phase of my life a truly transformative one, raising me out of persistent cycles of depression and stress that have plagued most of my adult life.
I’m passionate about nature and the wilderness and always have been, and I hope to share some of that passion with you.

A WORD OF CAUTION: My videos cover experiences I have had and are not to be taken as guides or recommendations without proper training and experience. I’ve been spending time in the wilderness camping wild and doing the various activities I show for many years, and have made plenty of mistakes while refining my experience and wisdom, some of which could have been very serious. Please seek appropriate training or go with someone more experienced than you before trying risky activities.

What beautful conditions you had for such a winter camp. So competently recorded for us to come along with you. Congratulations on overcoming the snow camp, losing feeling in extremities.... something to think about. thx for posting. JMO.

Really enjoyed that Feargus. Some lovely views and lighting. Did some of the Fannichs a few years back in May, still plenty of snow on the tops. Melting snow further down the slopes made waterlogged conditions under foot. Think you might like the GR20 route on Corsica, did it in June 2008. All best.

Fergus another great video worth all your effort for the views and pictures. Thanks. The animal that left the droppings behind is a grouse or Ptarmigan, having flown in and sheltered overnight in your deep footprint hence the amount of droppings.

Ah! That’s fascinating - thanks for pointing it out. One of the unexpected perks of doing these videos is knowledge from others who watch them. 🙂👍

Fergus, what a great film again mate, love it. Can see your channel blowing up before so long. 👏🏻 Can I ask what tent you currently use for the winter expeditions, I’m on the hunt for one at the moment. Thanks
@feargusc
@feargusc 6 месяцев назад
It’s the Terra Nova quasar. A fairly heavy one but the tent of choice for even some polar expeditions. 🙂

Ptarmigan most like - you can see the pellet-like structure, like grouse. But I'm not sure red grouse would be around at that height.
@feargusc

Yea I figured afterwards it was probably ptarmigan 🙂

The animal leaving his poo behind may well have followed in your footsteps, for some animals are so sluggish that they only take the path of least resistance. In the depression made by human foot, it is way easier to cover the tracks of an animal yielding such tiny pellets of faeces.

Good point. 👍

Wind blown snow has covered the shallower animal tracks over, but not your deeper footprints?
@feargusc
@feargusc 6 месяцев назад
Yea I thought about that, but there was no wind in that spot either day and it was even calmer at night. I’m more thinking that because the slope is at a steeper angle to the sun than other spots that the upper snow layer has evaporated the tracks away?

Another brilliant video Feargus. 😎🏔️⛺️👍. Looked like you suffered the same fate as me; run out of energy, light and time. Also the frozen lips 😁👍. Have a great adventure abroad. Best wishes - Dave
