Winter sets special demands on airside operations in Finland. Aircraft de-icing and de-frosting is an essential part of winter operations at airports and particularly important during the cold, snowy Finnish winters. For safety reasons, snow, ice, and frost are removed from the wings and the surface of the aircraft. Without the procedure, the upward force of the aircraft decreases, and wind resistance and the overall lift-off weight increase. Moreover, the engines may be damaged.
Finavia's Mika Järvinen, Head of Apron Control, explains how de-icing is done at Helsinki Aiport.
