Tori and I picked up a new wood stove from Lure of the North. They are a great provider of outdoor gear, including such delights as hand made mukluks and they also lead traditional winter camping trips in Northern Ontario. Check out a link to their website below.
When you buy a new wood stove, the type that's meant for use in a winter camping canvas tent, you need to burn it off first to get rid of the factory chemical or oil finish on the outside of it - or you'll smoke yourself out of your tent! My wife Tori did the honours of burning the stove off in preparation for our upcoming winter camping trip.
While she was doing that, I remembered someone recently asking me if I ever do any winter paddling? No, was my answer but I thought, why not give it a shot? After all, the river in front of my house stays open all year in a lot of places due to the strong current. So, after the stove was burning well, Tori did the honours of filming me undertaking what was the earliest in the year that I've ever paddled. I portaged the canoe down the river, climbed in and played around a little in the current. It was a relatively warm evening despite the fact that it was late January. It felt absolutely great to get on the water and it was very interesting to see winter from the perspective the canoe offers. The canoe is a Nova Craft 15' Prospector in Blue Steel with Ash Gunwales.
Check out some more of the things my wife Tori and I get up to around our rural home through the linked playlist below, and also, please like this video and subscribe to my RU-vid channel.

You're so lucky to have that River in your backyard. I love winter paddling in my kayak. Everything looks completely different than the summer months and I bump into fewer people. I live just outside of Boston and have racked up about 300 miles since the end of September. My rule of thumb is dress for the swim, not for the paddle.

Tories- I loved that you opened the carton with an axe! "I am Woman, hear me roar!" Jim I freaked that you were wearing what looked like a fleece hoody- not realizing that you were staying mere steps from your back yard and Tori was right there! You know what you are doing! 😂🏕🛶 Awesome.

It was a little scarier eddying-in though! That’s why we edited out the full front ferry shot. Because Tori was scared and the shot wash shaky. Haha. I commented on that too, the opening of the box with an axe. She is so cool

I'm in SoCal in the L.A. area, so I guess in Canada it's pretty common for women open boxes with an axe out in the snow next to a river, an then build a fire, yeah, I grew up in the wrong place.

My favorite kind of rapid, you can just recycle it all day. I am fortunate to have daily access to this type of rapid. The water seldom freezes so I enjoy similar winter rides frequently where the only colors I see are shades of snow and moving water.

I like the concept of the bun warmers/boot driers on the side of that stove. I don't think I've seen that before. The stove must be steel because of the preservative that had t be burned off. I think it would be best in titanium as many of the tent stoves are these days. Jim in the canoe, what could be better?!

Hi Jim. If you could rate this Canoe /10 where would you have it on the scale? I'm really interested in the steel blue

For what I used it for, long backcountry trips with lots of portaging class 1 rapids (and the odd 2), particularly for a larger person like me, 10 out of 10 easy. You can see me put it to some hard use in my two Algonquin Trout fishing videos

@@JimBairdAdventurer that's awesome. I will check out the video. The canoe looks absolutely gorgeous! How does it respond in windy conditions on open lakes while you are solo?

When Tori shot that image of the fire inside the stove, I immediately felt heat. Isn't that strange? Anybody else?

This is the Magnetawan. Here are a couple videos of me exploring the river down from my house all the way to the end. It’s an awesome river! ru-vid.com/group/PLdWkde9gml__p5TgQYjP2ti4_RHindyHo

Yes it is right beside our house! There aren’t any trout in it though but I can catch walleye and bass there!

Tons of small small mouth bass right out front and the odd big one if the small ones don’t get to it first. Down river and up river there’s walleye and pike
