Winter Photography Roadtrip In My 4x4 Van | Torridon

With a forecast for some extreme winter conditions, I packed up my 4x4 camper van, grabbed my Nikon Z7 II and headed to the far north of Scotland to indulge in some winter landscape photography. This is exactly why I purchased and built my Mitsubishi Delica camper van. In this finale, I drive south to Torridon and struggle with heavy snow.

Poor little Robin. He was starving due to the harsh conditions. They are one of the few birds almost tame enough to approach us in the hope of some food. A gentle reminder to all to leave out food and water for the birds when it freezes.

@@ThomasHeatonPhoto What about mid-south Wales? Looked over compared with Snowdonia but so scenic, so varied and so photogenic. Say from Abergavenny anywhere up via Camarthanshire to the coast at Cymtdyu, Newquay and Aberaeon up towards the Eden Valley just east of Aberystwyth. Mountains, forests, waterfalls, river lined valleys, beautiful bays and pretty coastal towns. It’s sublime.

I have to write another comment to add more. The time and effort you put into these videos, the walking for context and the storytelling, the spectacular drone scenes, all these little bits we get to enjoy from the comfort of our chairs and sofas (or wherever everyone else is watching this) take so time and effort, and in those temperatures and conditions you were in, it's no joke. And yet, it adds so much and is very much appreciated. You do take us with you even if just for a little window of time but one that is wonderful. Thank you! PS: I was waiting for the candid snap of the robin at the end :) (I wonder how long you considered putting it on for)

@johnsmith1474
@johnsmith1474 Год назад
You must be very limited in what you have seen in which case I suggest you review some art history. The shot is mediocre, especially considering what he is capable of and has done in better situations. It's filler, and that is why he bothered to make it a pano - no part of it stands on it's own. Technically the composition is static, the light is too one sided, it's just 3 big lumps. The whole left side is awful, there is interest in the lit clouds, but they are a marginal part of the picture. It's a nice souvenier if you were there and you took it, but it's not worth including in a portfolio and Heaton knows it.
@alexnoble3411
@alexnoble3411 Год назад
This has to be your best video yet. It summarizes everything you do to both get the shots and how you think about most of your compositions. If I were trying to share your work with others, this would be the first video I'd show them.

This has been a great series, with some beautiful images, but oh boy - that shot of the robin on your camera microphone, with you shown taking the image on the screen, and the landscape around, is an absolute winner! I can see it as a competition winner or magazine double page spread. It is just wonderful. I could happily look at that for a month in a calendar.

It's funny how we don't really think about all the b-roll of for ex the van driving. You'd have to drive to a place, stop and set up the camera, think about not trying to make foot steps etc in the snow, turn the camera on, back up the car and drive past the camera, back up and get the camera again and continue. Like, the extra time and effort for just some nice context. I really appreciate the work you put in here to tell your story

the Robin image is my favorite of the entire series. I always feel that good composition, light, execution, and editing will only get you so far. The best images must touch the viewer in some emotional way. As a photographer, the Robin on a camera with the photographer on screen is something I can relate to and feel excited about. Thanks for including that.

Those patterns in the ice, with solid white ice around darker circular patches, could be due to the heat retention of large boulders just below the surface: they will (from the beginning) be the same temperature as the water, but as the water cools, they may retain more heat (ie be hotter) than the water. Thus the surface water close enough to these boulders will not freeze as quickly as in other places. The size of the boulder and it's depth affect the size of the circle.

A beautiful part of Scotland. It's been many years since I was up there. Spent many a day driving up from Helensburgh to Kyle of Lochalsh to work up in the Western Highlands, occasionally in weather conditions that you had on this trip. Used to get the opportunity on weekends when I was up there to go up to the lochs around Torridon - some of the most spectacular landscapes in the UK, IMHO. All back in the 80s, so all my images are on B&W and transparency film.

in the lakes around here, those patterns on the ice are often caused by spring seeps on the bottom - slightly warmer water rising to the surface.from under the lake. in the summer you can feel the warmer spot in the water when swimming through them.

My guess about the ice circles on the loch is that there are pockets of methane gas from rotting vegetation seeping up from the bottom, warming the water enough to thin the ice. If it got suddenly colder, you might have bubbles in the ice like that lake in the Canadian Rockies where you shot with Adam, Gavin, and Nick some years back.
