I am just curious because I notice most swedish bloggers do this. But, I've lived in north central BC so we get fairly cold winters and we have always stoked the fire high in the evening, then turn the damper down, one of us will usually get up sometime in the night to stoke it and we always have a hot bed of coals in the morning and a fairly warm house. I was just wondering if there is a reason you do not do this? Genuinely just curious 😊
@NorthernHeart
@NorthernHeart 4 года назад
Hi Lovely! It's an absolutely valid question, no offense taken :) So, this is the reason: This type of fire place can hold the heat for a few hours, so even if we made a huge fire in the evening - like you described, it would only last until a few hours into the night. Also, to get the best effect of the fire, when it's sort of "burned down" and the coal is all intense, the best way to make the heat "go" into the house, you need to close an air passage to the chimney (I can't describe it better than that in English I hope you understand what I mean).Meaning, you have to go up in the middle of the night to get the most out of have a fire going - disturbing your precious sleep cycle in the process. And you need to go up maybe 4 times a night to close the air passage, and to start a new fire. The thing is, no one is downstairs during the night, so heating that part of the house during that time, would mean a waste of money and natural resources. It's almost like heating the house when no one is at home. Also, upstairs it's quite alright in regards to the temperature, the heat moving upwards during the day and later part of the evening. Also we have supporting radiators. For us, the hassle with doing that + the resources needed as well as money spent on wood would far outweigh any positive effects of keeping a fire during the night. Once we go downstairs in the morning and start a fire in our fire place as well in our old wood stove the downstairs get warm pretty quickly :) There are of course different types of fire places/stoves in Sweden that have different properties in terms of how long they hold the heat, but this is the case for our fire place and wood stove. I hope this explains it and makes it more logical :) xo /Maria
@fayewilde_
@fayewilde_ 4 года назад
@@NorthernHeart oh that makes perfect sense! I figured it would have something to do with your stoves. Ours is a different brand all together and is very heat efficient, so we only get up once (we have a person in the family who get up every night to pee, with out fail) for us it is more efficient to keep the fire going through the night (our house is old and damp, with little to no insulation) and it is better to keep it warm. Thank you for the response and it completely makes sense. Every stove works differently and I was curious:)

While convenient, getting heat through the night and not having to re-kindle the fire in the morning, it is not recommended. The combustion is incomplete, producing less energy, and worse risking chimney fires and produces a lot of carbon monoxide.
@NorthernHeart

Hello my lovely RU-vid family! Finally I managed to upload a new video. This one was seriously cursed with some bad mojo because everything that could go wrong went wrong. Technical aspects, lost sequences/clips, it was too dark to film, the SD card didn't work properly and the sound was off. But finally I manged to put something that felt ok into a video, sometimes you just have to settle for "good enough". No matter I still hope you enjoy it! I hope everyone celebrating Thanksgiving is having the best Thanksgiving weekend with loved ones! Sweden is over all a very poor country and their king pays many of them their rent and food and spending cash due to lack of jobs. I nearly moved there while engaged to one famous there. I broke up with her, but vague info i was told if i didn't land a job soon had i moved there... And something like i must give up my American citizenship to get their benefits after like 5 years... You're on a welfare ticket by their king but must find a cheap apt rent as well and hard to come by. Her family had vacent apartments in various cities just incase and all the while was paid for by their king. Their systems... Eh.. Meanwhile americans bash folks on welfare and food stamps. Even though if an American worked in past their own taxes cover benefits.....

@@zippitydodaday6037 As a swede myself, I have no idea what your talking about. The king pays for rent and food? We (the taxpayers) pay each month a amount of our taxes to the royal family, basically the pepole of Sweden pay for some of royal family's salary. In return they attracts alot of tourists to Stockholm which helps Swedens overall wealthfare and they are also doing charity. The king basically have no power at all in todays society. And I find it interesting that you don't load the stove up to burn through the night. We always fillup our stove every evening, and then it will normally have a few logs added in the middle of the night. Jonna also talked like they don't keep the stove burning at night, is there a reason that this doesn't seem to be done in Sweeden? I find things like this interesting. @@kck9742 , Let's put thing into scale. Sweden would be still rated one of safest states in US. It just gets a lot news because situation has become worse than it used to be. I agree there is problems to solve but then again there is problems to solve in every place. Even Switzerland is probably far from perfect (As outside Switzerland seems to have nicely balanced laws and well functioning society).

Here in the north, the variation of the seasons is really great with the abundant light of summer and the heat changing into the darkness, cold and snowstorms of winter. Still worth experiencing because that’s how I better understand the different stages of human life.

Live in Pacific Northwest of the US. Not as far north as these guys probably, but it is the northern hemisphere. It's dark, cold, muddy, and rainy here, right now. Winter solstice is on December 21- doesn't get light till 7:45 am, Sun will set at 4:47 pm and it will be pitch black by 5:30 pm. If its cloudy, even the daylight hours are pretty dark, which is tough. The good thing is, once solstice passes, the daylight hours will slowly increase. By February 1, even if it's freezing cold, the crocus flowers will bloom and the western tree frogs begin to wake up by the millions- their shrill chorus is intense. By March 1, daffodils have formed their buds, and the air starts to smell like perfume. Hoping we don't get freezing rain this year, (which encases literally every surface in a thick coating of ice) or really "wet" snow because the incredible weight of either will probably knock power out by snapping lines and power poles. Power outages in rural areas means sometimes days on end living by candles and lanterns and have to make sure I have fresh drinking water stashed in containers to tide me over. Fortunately have a wood burning stove and plenty of firewood cut, split and stacked for the winter this year so I can at least cook and stay warm. I am often curious about what it is like to live in a place that never freezes...

Sweden will be my new home in the near future. I'm in love with the Scandinavian nature, the culture and the warm hearted people from the North. Here in Germany I feel more and more unsafe, restless and missunderstood. With my love for nature, animals and almost untouched landscapes. This and all the other videos let me step closer towards my dream.

@@xmuta You talk about politics, globalism and terrorism. These are sensitive and also relevant topics. I observe the world events very closely, so that I am aware of the changes and developments of the last 20 years. You can often hear disturbing news from Malmö. But you can not and should not necessarily confuse politics and society. There are problems in every country, especially in Germany. But I'm much more concerned. I really want to go back to the roots, the true source of peace and happiness of mankind. And as you can see in this and the many other videos, you can still find those two such elemental things. In nature, away from the restless and already alienated civilization of our modern age.

I love your honesty! Above all that you say that the firewood was delivered, as is usually the case in Sweden. Some RU-vidrs pretend to the audience that they had only chopped wood with great effort all summer and autumn so that the story comes across as more romantic.

Layers. Most definitely. I loves in snowy areas. Layers are a must. I still use in not so cold climates with thinner fabrics and fewer layers. Love the pinecones for the fire. I now wonder if I did the same as a child as I want to gather lots of small pinecones while in the forest.

As always; moments spent with you are relaxing and refreshing. I love Winter preparations. When I had a wood stove, I'd buy a trailer load, stack it up against the house under cover. It looked so homey. I have a big, round log that I'd chop my timber into different widths, gather pinecones and smaller twigs for firestarters. Even here in Australia, it gets cold in Winter, but something tells me; I must have lived in the Northern Hemisphere at some time, because it's the rhythms and routines that already lie deep within me, the ones where I feel "Home." And I so miss swinging an axe.......xxxx
