A great little fishing session from the shore given the time of year. Trying out various methods in one session shows that not limiting yourself to one type of fishing can produce great results. Fishing a float for Garfish and bigger baits at distance for whatever was lurking below. Any day spent fishing is a great days fishing!

John thanks for uploading these vids mate they're brilliant. Next time I go raying I'm gonna try your up and over on one rod and the pulley rig I normally use on the other. I normally always use grip leads but I'll try a normal lead as well 👍🎣 every days a school day always something new to learn ..thanks again, tightlines 👍
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker 5 лет назад
basa364 - Depending on the tide run, seabed, how high you have your rod tip or tight you have your line. A pulley rig can have your bait up off the bottom, as you know with ray fishing you need to have your bait right to the bottom. My up and over rig has it nailed to the deck 😉 The grip lead thing is a judgement call on the day. I usually fish 1 with and 1 without. Just to allow it to search out ground a bit. If the lead is moving too much or tieing the rig up in knots. Go back to grips. 👍🏻🎣
@basa364
@basa364 5 лет назад
I'm fishing the Tamar mostly so there is a fair bit of tide but I'll try the plain leads on smaller tides or when it's around slack tide 👍
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker 5 лет назад
basa364 - it is sometimes better to shorten up the overall rig and hooklength when the tide is weak. Having a bit of flow helps keep the rig laid out straight. But obv too much tide with a plain lead will roll everything up into knots. It’s all a learning curve mate. Every day is a school day. 👍🏻

A decent size gar is actually pretty decent to eat. I remember catching a bunch of them off Torquay pier back in the '80s and I grilled them for my Nanna who absolutely loved them. She was visiting down from Bedford and said she never had fish so fresh and lovely. The bones are green but no worries, it's due to a harmless pigment called biliverdin, which is coincidentally what makes bruises in human skin look blue/green-ish.

Thanks John, good stuff as usual. My son, a Course Angler, is in the process of looking at buying a fishfinder for his kayak. We are at one of the only villages on the non-tidal stretch of the Trent that has a kayak-fishing approved stretch. I wondered if you had thought of doing a piece on fishfinders? Not so much the 'how'; more a buyer's guide, especially because some of these vendors want to lock you into agreements that involve total dependance on their company for mapping purposes, ie you can't do it without them. User tips from an experienced angler are always useful, it's buying the right one first that is difficult if you have no experience of them, though. Thanks mate.
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker 4 года назад
- Russell my experience of fish finders is purely on boats. But I do know a few people who are very clued up on Yaks. If you contact Liam Faisey on Cornish Kayak Angler he will certainly see you right. www.kayakfishing.blog/blog ru-vid.com/show-UCN2nP85HrlIS1TjHqHG1JVw

i was told to gut the mackerel before freezing to stop them being so mushy when defrosted.
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker 5 лет назад
karl wood - I’m my experience it’s more to do with how quickly you get them frozen after catching. Mackerel go mushy mega quick. They have an acid in their muscles that turns them to mush almost immediately after dieing. Bleeding them and gutting them will help keep the meat good for longer when you’re eating them, but I like a bloody bait and when using mackerel flappers, like them to have the stinky bloody guts in for added scent. 👍🏻😉

I've have fished a few metres to your left with sand eel, prawn and crab and further along towards....... Fished pulleys and droppers and singles etc all ranges states of tides etc. Just wanted to no what works for you.? Thanks for the video. Cheers for the advice Will
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker 5 лет назад
Will Hayes - Thanks for getting in touch mate. The area is not a mark that I really like for just that reason. I know so many people who have blanked repeatedly from there. People may tell you different things about the place but I prefer a good sized flooding tide for there. I have caught from there all year round and have found my up and over rig to be the most consistently productive for me - for a few reasons. What conditions do you fish it? I very rarely completely blank, because as you see in the vid I always mix it up a bit and use multiple methods. 👍🏻🎣

@@TheFishLocker nice one, thank you for the advice. I have tried all sorts. Different states of tides baits etc. But as your video describes they do come out! Guess it's a numbers game!
