Hi friends! Welcome! My name is Bobbi and I garden in zone 6b. I am happy and sad to be sowing the last of my winter jugs. Winter jug seed sowing is a great and inexpensive way to sow seeds. The “jug” causes a mini greenhouse effect and is a great way to start cold hardy flowers and veggies! My favorite flower to sow in winter jugs is Poppies. I hope you will give jug sowing a try!
I purchase a lot of my seeds from:

I won't bore everyone with my ravings about winter sowing as I have done that many times before so suffice to say I will have roughly 800 to 1,000 plants come spring from jugs, large totes, small totes and 2 liter bottles. Thanks for sharing this method with everyone Bobbi.😊

You deserve to rave! That’s a lot of plants! Your gardens are probably fabulous! Thanks for watching and for your faithful support! 🤗

I love the idea of Winter jug sowing. We just never have any empty jugs...or very rarely anyhow. I have used the few plastic bottles we have as mini greenhouses (by cutting off the bottoms) for tender plants outside; it helps keep snails off them as well. I need to start asking friends to save theirs for me.

Hi Dani! Thanks for watching! You would definitely love jug sowing! I have heard of gardeners using plastic jugs to protect tender plants, that’s a good reminder! Hope you are doing well!

Looking forward to seeing the reveal this Spring! I also number my jugs and cross reference to a hand written sheet just in case the tags get worn. I put the numbers all over the jug lol.

Hi Bobbi, those beds of zinnias were so gorgeous! I’m thinking I need to do that. I’ve grown Lobelia from seeds for quite a few years. It’s surprisingly easy and so worth it. 😊 Happy gardening ❤️

Hi Vicki! You should totally do that! That year, I purchased all of those zinnia in 6 packs, I found them on a great deal! That garden is one of my best memories! Great to know about the Lobelia, I was shocked at how tiny the seeds are! 🤗🌸

@@GardeningOnTaylorMountain , They are tiny. I usually start mine indoors. I just sprinkled them from between my fingers all over the container I’m planting them in. Good luck 😁

I wish I had seen this video before planting my poppies directly outside. I can see where the seeds will better for me to plant in the jugs, then I know exactly where they are growing!

I really love sowing Poppy seeds with the winter sowing method. However, I just also sowed 2 beds with poppy seeds but I had to cover them with hoops and bird netting so the birds wouldn’t eat the seeds! I also sowed them in a few more areas and covered the areas with some small cloches that I have. But, sowing them in jugs is definitely a good way to go. The Poppies in the jugs have germinated and I’ll be planing them out in about 4 weeks!

@@GardeningOnTaylorMountain thank you for sharing with me about your use of the hoops and netting.

Bobbi, we have cattle also. Are you familiar with a Y tex cattle tag marker. I use that marker for my jugs and it does not wear off. Maybe give it a try next time.

That’s a fantastic idea, thank you! My son in law does all the ear tagging so I don’t have one of those markers but I’ll pick one up at the co-op to keep in the greenhouse. I never thought of using one of those, they definitely do not fade! Glad you shared that!
