Our beef herd never had shelter when I was growing up. You would see them all huddled together on the coldest days of the year. Just like you said. Snow piled up on their backs. The dairy herd was in a mostly climate controlled environment inside the dairy barn. Take a guess which ones we had to have the veterinarian for. Our horses do not get blankets. My wife being an equestrian veterinarian says they are the worst thing you can do to the horse. Believe me, the care these hosed get, she would certainly use them if she knew that they helped instead of making the situation worse.
