Thank you so much for your videos they have really helped me in my decluttering journey. I was just thinking do you ever struggle when the house gets messy, there can be a fine line between minimalism and perfectionist tenancies. Would love to know your thoughts on this subject. PS you have almost convinced me to get a bunt tin! 😂❤️❤️❤️❤️

@@racheltaverner3141 lol, you won’t regret the Bundt pan!!!! 😉 I don’t really have a perfectionistic bone in my body so that hasn’t been my struggle, but I do realize that I don’t get stressed by messes anymore b because I know the house can always be put back together quickly!

I did just buy rounded labels for my closet as I head into my 3rd wrist surgery and my husband (and me) need help with labels. I am a big hanger not folder person but hub does laundry and isn't always sure where to put my tops. Thinking my labels are: Thin long sleeve. Sweaters. Cardigans. Tanks. Work Tops. Hoping labeling will reduce the energy load. And while doing that, I suppose I should purge more!! :) If a top is not screaming "squeee" it's time to redonate. OK. Motivated. I'll reply to my comment later with my total winter tops left and how many I am going to donate! Thanks, as always... my MIL also watches you which is impressive because she's not a big internet savvy person! I get to show her before/afters of my house after watching your videos. :-) My kitchen counter is still EMPTY (save for a compost bin) after MONTHS and MONTHS!

For me, when I was decluttering shirts, I asked myself, “If I asked my husband to grab me a shirt for the day, would I be disappointed if he grabbed this one?” And that really helped me get out the ones I didn’t love, or that I need to adjust all the time, even more so than when I was just asking myself, “Do I wear this shirt?”

I ask my self "can my husband pack a suitcase and get it right?" At this time...success! My wardrobe is not large but I love every item. Each and every piece is comfortable and helps me feel confident. Your suggestions, Dawn, really helped me decide I no longer wanted to have my clothing condemn me.

For people who don’t love black clothes, but would like the simplicity Dawn is describing, you might try choosing a neutral palette for your basics/essentials and then selecting an accent color that coordinates with those neutrals. For instance, if black isn’t your neutral try taupe with olive or grey with blue. This approach still allows for a simple, mix and match wardrobe, but tailored to your preferences.

Love this idea! I don't even think the color black complements most people's features. For myself, I'm thinking navy with shades of brown and maybe a light pink accent color.

That's a great idea. My best neutrals are ivory, bright navy and dark chocolate. I use the dressing your truth system. Everything goes well together that way. (I have no affiliation) It can be a bit overwhelming to start and challenging to find your "type", but it is so fun and easy once you get the hang of it. I like that I can wear many different bright colors and they all go together. :)

Exactly! Not all of us like or look good in black. I limit my wardrobe to 4 colors - grey, blue, purple and pink. I can wear any cool versions of those colors. My neutrals are greys and blue-greys (navy isn't so great on me either). Pick you favorite colors and go from there.

@@andreac1445 I agree. Black can be aging on a lot of people, but everyone has a neutral that suits them. A way to add variety would be to have tops in lighter and darker versions of the same colour, e.g. black, charcoal, light grey.

Hi Dawn… before retiring, I worked in a bank for 38 years. Ouch! Fifteen years ago I decided the same thing as you. So I had 5 pairs of black pants and five little jackets and sweaters. My color came from my little sleeveless tops I wore underneath and all tops went with black. I took it a step further and one week my tops were pinky/purple ish and the next week green/blue ish. No one ever guessed that I did that to simplify my weekly laundry. No dresses. I swore off pantyhose at age 45. Very liberating. Love your videos.👏

As a carer of a family with lots of disabilities, your channel sooths and gives me peace. I used to always hit the clearance racks. I’ve stopped doing so because it can be hard to not snatch up items I don’t really need just because they are “such a great deal!!”, which often meant i was willing to settle on these items. Now I’d rather spend more on better quality items and things that I love. If I don’t love it, I don’t buy it.

Yes! Me too. I am on the shorter side too and curvier so skinny’s always felt uncomfortable. I have always loved bootcut jeans for their comfort and I find them more flattering 💕

I didn’t even know boot cut wasn’t worn anymore. I’ve still been wearing them, but I guess they are 4 years old at least. I do have one straight cut for tall boots, but don’t care for those as much. By the time I realized no one had scrunchies anymore and got rid of all mine except a couple, they came back out 1-2 years later. Always behind, but oh well.

The hospital where I work went to mandatory all gray scrubs. At first I was really bummed I was not being able to wear all my colorful scrubs, but it's been a year and now i have fully embraced my uniform and how easy it is! I've saved so much money too not always going out to buy new scrubs!

The (few! PTL!!) hospitals I have seen have their staff color-coded. When I had my babies, the maternity ward nurses wore cornflower blue scrubs, and other wards had different colors each. It was part of their security system, a nurse explained- you could tell if someone didn't belong.

This summer I found one dress that I loved and bought it in 4 different colors and had 2 pairs of inexpensive sandals that would match any of them. Then I later bought 2 casual hiking outfits. It definitely made life so much easier and saved me hundreds of dollars! I think your method is something that should be held in high regard and black is timeless! 🤗 LOVE your content by the way.

I'm a redhead with blue eyes so I have decided navy is my black. Most solid navy tops can easily be dressed up or down depending on the type of pants and accessories. Also I don't feel like I'm wearing the same thing all the time because they have different fabrics and cuts.

hello felow redhead w blue eyes.....rarest of the rare lol. Black can be harsh on us...i struggle to find dark brown waterproof mascara that isnt super costly. You probably look great in spring green, certain aquas, etc... also. Anyway...hello!

Yes! I have naturally auburn hair and blue eyes, and same: wardrobe is shades of Navy and blues. I do have some copper browns pieces as they work with my colour and fair skin, and the blues really well.

I was thinking of you when my husband and I went to a concert this last weekend. I put on some cute shoes that I haven't worn in years and ran out the door. By the end of the night I had blisters in the back of my heel that hurt so much with every step I took. I said to myself, "Dawn would say if they don't fit well or feel good - get rid of them". Then get something that is comfortable. I put them in my donate box the second I got home. I am so about comfort right now not what's cute. Thanks Dawn!

Same, I went to a wedding wearing shoes I’ve had for a while. I was struggling to be comfortable in them and at one point I just said, “yep, these shoes are done, as soon as I get home I’m getting rid of them!” And everyone around me was surprised.

I totally agree that a “uniform look” helps in busy times. I used to have navy tops and leggings as a uniform. Now I have a different uniform that mixes crew neck t-shirts with button down cardigans and dark pull on jeans for work. So basically I wear the same thing everyday but the colors get changed up. It works for me! Thanks for your advice and insightful suggestions on simplifying. I look forward to your videos.

Mix n Match is so helpful. I now try to stay in the black/gray/blue color palette so pretty much everything works together. I used to have that "cute top" for example that I loved but never wore because I had nothing to go with it.

Dawn, I love watching your videos. I had my first baby 1 year ago and that’s when my anxiety and depression worsened. Having the “permission” to let go of stuff that I don’t need that just gets in the way of spending time with my daughter and husband, and being “allowed” to wear mostly black and just have a few pieces is really freeing and it’s so worth getting rid of the stuff so that you can have the mental energy for other things! xx

Last night my husband was reminiscing about his younger years. He grew up in the same town where Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash lived and remembers well when they would come into the Sunday matinee at the movie theatre where he worked or the H.G.Hills grocery store where he also bagged groceries. As most people know, Johnny and June wore all black, every day. It's a great story as to why, but it totally reminded me of you! How simple to always be wearing black, like the Man in Black.

I completely understand you about the uniform. When I was 20something, back in 2000, when nobody even talked about sth. like that, I only wore blue. And not all shades of blue, no! Only denimblue. I'm an so called "soft summer" with blue eyes and it's the most flattering colour on me. I didn't tell anyone, and being dressed in blue is not a striking way, but someday my Professor for Biology called "Oh, the lady in blue is here!" 😂

Can I just say that I personally Express lots of emotion and personal style through my clothing, so that's one area that I won't be downsizing. However, I do love that you have given me the inspiration and understanding that I don't have to downsize everything in my life in order to be more orderly/tidy. Utterly priceless!

That is totally my style too, jeans, booties and a black top. I'm 5"3" and prefer bootcut as well. I am really picky about my jeans and believe it or not I found my favorite fit at JC Penney! St. John's Bay, mid-rise, bootcut are now on sale for $17.99. I've had two pair for a few years and decided to pick up another pair. Great video!

Love this! I did this with my three little kids' wardrobes (ages 8, 5, and 5). Everyone has five neutral bottoms, and then 6 or 7 tops that match all five bottoms beautifully. Add tennis shoes, and they always look perfectly put together after dressing themselves! They do their own single load of wash every week. Easy peasy! I would never go back!

I have seriously considered switching most of my wardrobe to dresses, I am so frustrated at the quality and fit of jeans, so a dress and legins would be easy.. I would just have to build up my dress stock.. since I only have a few and they are very summery. And don't know if I can stay warm enough during the winter, but I'll try it for a season.

@Maria Storgaard 🤍 Try wearing a thin pair of tights for chilly weather and you can double-up with thick tights on top for the colder temperatures... That helps me! Check out "The Daily Connoisseur" and "Inspired by Nikki", they both wear dresses ONLY and especially TDC, she shows how to wear winter boots and tights for the cold temps❄️ Blessings

I like dresses too. Throw them over your head and done! I found these amazing tights that are so soft and warm on Amazon (the brand name was Vero Monte). I wore them last winter in 30 degree weather at an outdoor graduation!

I have done dresses only for at least ten years now. It did take me a little bit to acquire 5-8 really great ones (with pockets!) but I LOVE it now. And I literally get compliments every single time I'm out in public, meanwhile basically feeling like I'm in pajamas.

I haven't worked up to all dresses yet but when I wear dresses I am so happy and comfortable! Make sure you get good quality wool socks. And warm leggings. You actually stay warmer in dresses than pants, depending on how long your dress is.

I'm in the leggings and tunic top group. It's so simple to get dressed in the morning! You've inspired me to take it a step further - as I add to or replace tops in my wardrobe, I'm sticking with black, grey, and purple (my best color). Even easier! Thanks for your energy and all your input. You've helped me change our home into one that is simpler and functions better for this season of our life. My husband is sure to listen when I preface a statement with, "Dawn says..."! He listens anyway, but he knows your opinions have come to mean a lot to me. Have a blessed autumn!

I’m tall and skinny jeans look terrible on me as well! Jeans story: About 20 years ago, Levi’s had shops where you could get measured and order custom jeans that fit your body perfectly. It was amazing! Alas, custom Levi’s are long gone, but I bought 2-pair (bootcut) which I’ve kept through 20 years of gradual weight gain and fashion trends. Then The Fates aligned, because in time for bootcuts and flares to come back, I got sick, losing so much weight that my beloved bootcut Levi’s were the only pants that fit me in my closet. And you know what? They are SO comfortable compared to today’s jeans because they are 100% cotton. They don’t even have pockets big enough for a smartphone! I am SO glad I invested in them back in the day. It goes right back to your idea to spend a little more for clothing that truly works for you. Clothing that lasts through thick and thin! For better or worse, I guess these Levi’s and I were meant to be! 👖👖💕

Right! Levis were the best! The newer ones...not so much. In fact, the "vintage Levis" sell for premium prices on Poshmark etc. One would think the company would take note!

Levi's used to be my all time favorite jeans but now whenever I get a pair I have to return them! Either the fit is not right or the material isn't really denim or the jeans are way too stretchy and won't last long! I remember Levi's used to be 100% cotton, but not any more.

I love this! I've simplified my "uniform" down to comfortable jeans (I have 2) with a button up plaid shirt (I have like 3 or 4). I feel very "homesteader" in it, but that's kind of where life is taking us right now anyway! I always throw on a cute pair of dangly earrings to make me feel more feminine and it's worked well for me for the past couple of months!

I love building a basic black wardrobe or black pants, perhaps a solid colored top blue, red, purple, etc and a black blazer or knit cardigan in winter. I sing and often wear boots of many different kinds, and that is how I bring color to a black outfit. I often match my boots to my husband's shirt. This summer I got quite a few Christian t-shirts and paired them with jeans for running errands. Those were cute, cool and comfortable. And a good witness as well. I love your uniform! Very classy and comfortable. You can dress it up or down with accessories. You are so adorable...🌞

The uniform is working for me. Black top black pants. I have now begun accessorizing with vintage jewelry that I couldn’t give up. Easy mornings and I get to wear some of my grandmother’s cool jewelry!

I have switched to this style and I have to say..I love it. I no longer find myself in stores searching for hours on the racks for something to wear. If I need to go to Marshalls or TJ Max it is so easy to go in and look only at the black tops! I don't even really go shopping that much and I love that!

I’m glad you are happy in all black. I like black and it goes great with my mostly white Queenager hair. But my eyes are blue so I wear a lot of blues and pinks and other vibrant colors. I don’t mind deciding on an outfit each day! Part of the fun of living! I have choices!

I'm with Helen...I actually get up some days thinking, "I want to wear purple today," or thoughts like that. I save the blacks and grays for rainy days, but when the sun is shining I like to wear something brighter!

I definitely had an "uniform" when I was staying home and homeschooling. Now that I am back in a classroom teaching, I have bought a ton of clothes and it is seriously so stressful getting dressed a lot of mornings! I needed this video to encourage me to minimize my closet for work.

Have really enjoyed your videos, but my favourites are the ones you do on wardrobe decluttering, I think they are by far the best and easiest way to decide what to keep. Some people choose black. Some choose khaki. I have aqua colored eyes so my “signature” color is my eye color match. I never fail to have a pulled together look and I never fail to have someone comment on my eyes. Choose your own “black”….even if its blue, brown, pink, whatever!!!

This is the one thing I am adamant about with clothing styles. I really do not care what is in or out of style. If it works for me, I wear it. If it doesn't, I don't. Also the number on the tag does not matter to me, it is how the item feels and looks. And instead of setting limit with color, I set my limit with the style or fit that way I have more color and pattern which is what says ME! Dawn, you are an inspiration and I love you!

I love that you help me to look at it differently and that it’s ok to be simply dressed. Not that I was always in dress pant and blouse. I like my jeans and I have what seems to be 100’s of tops. I have cut down, but get a little hung up on clothes for church and for unexpected events. So with the unexpected events, I kept 2 pairs of dress, black slacks and a couple of blouses to match. I do have 4-5 dresses that I wear to church. Could probably cut back to 1-2. Anyway, thank you for all the great tips. You are always a welcome break to my day.

Yes! I started this after my second baby, when I was struggling to "bounce back" and felt like I had nothing to wear or fit my well. I read a blog about how to have a French wardrobe and was enthralled with the idea to go back to basics, neutral-color items, and find high-quality clothes. With only one income for our family, I'm still at it after 6 years.

Hello... when I was working, about 12 years ago...I always wore black boot cut jeans with a top n black blazer jacket...2 pair of black jeans exactly the same... pair of black boots n brown boots... match boots to color of top...a lot of people kept telling me that I wore too much black... lol... it swayed me temporarily... but I'm still in "MY" uniform to this day... one type for shopping, dinners n such and another for just at home, cleaning, cooking, etc... great video... tfs... 5'3" and 40 years old and mom. I knew boot cut jeans were "not in" but I did not care. I have worn them sence they were "in". And as Dawm said...the boot cut just works so well on my short body. Tried skiny jeans and other, but I just love my boot cut!!!!

I’m going to date myself but I wore the wooden base sandals with the strip of leather across the top with a little buckle. Came in red, bone or navy. I would buy them at the local Rexall drug store. It was all I ever wore in the summer. I once walked 10 miles into town to get a cherry dip from the DQ’.

I buy higher quality items only in black...they wear better and wash better. If I am spending $200-300.00 on a quality suit it will be black...and my dry cleaner appreciates that. Lol. I found that when I had a ton of choices- I still picked black clothes almost every day because for me it looks sharp and clean and crisp...if it feels boring I add a bright scarf or earring. I get though that it's not for everyone...but you could still do similar in your favorite color...

Years ago I realized almost my entire wardrobe was black, so I made an effort to add color, a year later I realized my wardrobe now consisted of black and green, green being my favorite color. We like what we like.

I allow myself two trendy pieces a season...sometimes those are colorful... sometimes black...but I don't spend much on them because I know they will be dated by the next time that season rolls around and most likely will be in the donate pile. I adore teal and aqua...so a lot of my accessories are in those colors... But shoes, handbags, work tote...the more expensive items that this stage of life requires right now are black.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas on this! I’ve been working on simplifying my wardrobe, but I’m definitely one of those people who falls under the category of loving to put cute outfits together. Two things I’ve really been working on lately, is only having/keeping clothing that fit properly (rather than keeping the fantasy self me stuff that isn’t working any longer) and having items around that work for the season of life I’m currently in. I became a stay-at-home mom just over a year ago now - prior to that I had to wear business casual outfits every day... While I wanted to keep everything, I realized how impractical that was and started pairing down. It’s still a work in progress, but it’s getting there. ☺️ Thanks again for sharing your wisdom! It’s very much appreciated!

I like your comment about only having such a simple wardrobe for a short time to meet your current needs. It's a good way to look at it not thinking that you have to wear this set uniform for the rest of your life but just as you need it now and it can change in the future.

Years ago I worked with a woman who only wore black in the Winter. In the summer she would wear light Gray bottoms with white tops. Very few people realized that she only had a few clothes but what she had his pad was well fitting and classic . She loved colored colored scars and necklaces and wore them quite well with her black clothing. I Really admired her sense of style. I went to her house one day and her closet was so small compared to mine yet she looked better than I did every day!

I love a black focused wardrobe! Makes shopping for clothes that match with it much easier. My color pallet is black, white and grey. All the fun accessories that I put with it pop and I feel really good. In this new season of life I went from have a minimal wardrobe cause I never left the house while being a stay at home mom that homeschooled, to working in an office where I am excited to dress up and wear a larger variety of clothes. I am even doing the hanger technique were I put the hangers on backward to begin with and then as I wear my clothes putting them back on the correct way. Then I know what I have worn and challenge myself to wear more of my clothes before going back to those current favorites.

I am 5’2” and wear skinny jeans. When I had young kids and a tighter budget I did the uniform. Over time, I felt I was punishing myself. I have a wider range of what my uniform is, colors and styles so it isn’t as simple as all black. I think the overall sense is if one is looking for a way to simplify they need only to look at different options for what fits their season of life now and choose a solution.

I've gone back and forth through phases. I've realized lately that I need a uniform; when I have to stew about what I'm going to wear, it makes me off the charts anxious. It sounds nuts, but there it is. At 66, I'm dealing with a body that's changing all over the place. My muscles are shrinking and my areas of fat are shifting. I think this morphing is making me extra anxious, so a uniform helps. It's an area of stability that I can work with.

I relate! and also enjoy a predominantly black winter wardrobe. However silk scarves take up very little room and add a significant splash of color. My lifetime collection of lightweight scarves fits easily into one drawer. When you make a sudden decision to go out during a casual day, throwing on a bright scarf elevates your game immediately with no dress-stress, and others enjoy seeing the color.

Thanks for the video! Watching in the uk. This winter I’m starting a new job not in hospital uniform any more. The simplest way I’ve made my wardrobe work is that I have a top and trouser I love and are so comfy, so I now have that top in 3 colours (black, blue and white) and the trousers in 2 colours (blue and black), so it’s simple, easy with minimal fuss getting ready in the morning. 😊

New York City is a pretty dressy place, and I'm a musician in New York City, so I have lots of black clothing. My basic winter uniform is black, straight leg jeans and a black or colorful sweater. I love not having to think about what to wear - it's going to be my black jeans and whatever sweater is next. I can easily dress the outfit up with a scarf or jewelry. My summer uniform is the same idea, but with white or medium blue jeans and colorful 3/4 sleeved tee shirts, again easily dressed up with a scarf or jewelery. Years ago I decided to call myself "cute" rather than "short", which allows me to wear flat shoes. :-)

I've been doing this for years! I was an early childhood educator and needed a wardrobe that was comfortable, easy to choose what to wear each day, could hide sticky fingers and paint - and most important - could all be thrown into the washing machine at the end of the week. Easy- peasy.

I really like the idea of a uniform, or at the very least a defined style/silhouette/color palette to base outfits and styling decisions off of. Simplifying getting dressed in such a way as I don't have to think too hard about what I'm doing for the day, and if my outfit will be appropriate. My partner wears jeans and a t-shirt everyday (he likes graphic tees, so he always has something fun that he loves). Must be nice to always have a simple, ready-for-everything outfit on automatically. I don't know yet how to translate this idea for my style. I'm still working on it. I'll definitely check out your other wardrobe video!

I'm still trying to define my style, but I accidently found my color palette when I went on a work trip. I don't like taking a lot, so I packed my grey/blue/black/white clothes that could all mix & match and layer for the spring/summer weather, with a few pieces of jewelry to dress it up for evening dinner. It was so simple! My week trip ended up being 3 weeks, & I found I didn't miss the rest of my wardrobe. As Bob Ross said, it was a Happy Accident! Good luck on your style journey, Candice.

@@kimberlytross9864 Thanks for the encouragement Kimberly! Isn't it great how traveling with just a little really crystalizes the fact that we don't actually need very much?! I think I have colors mostly figured out too. Jewel tones that are deep and saturated are what I like best on me. Pastels and muted shades are making their way out. Now, to tackle the categories. I work exclusively from home now, so it doesn't make sense for me to have a bunch of strictly "office clothes" that I wouldn't wear around the house. Trying to figure out a style of dressing that works well for being at home, but still feels like me and not too boring. I think a capsule is in the cards for me soon, living everyday life kinda like I'm on vacation... with only few items that mix well together.

I absolutely agree with you on simplifying my wardrobe - I have 2 pairs of well fitting jeans too and five jumpers which go with both pairs for weekends, and 2 pairs of trousers and 8 blouses for work. I wear the same pair of boots with all outfits but sometimes switch them out for my trainers at the weekends. It so simple and easy and perfect for my season of life . Xx

Wow, I love this idea! I struggle with my mornings. My husband is a paraplegic and we have four dogs. That means that I am the only one with legs to get the day going. My hubby requires quite a bit to get him going everyday. Dogs need to be pottied and fed etc... I have not developed a routine that works for us. I am the last to get done. Which means there are many days that I am wearing athletic pants and shirt... I feel sad on the days that I don't fix up a bit, as I always dressed up before I remarried. I often feel like a failure. I get inspired when I watch you. I just need to see things from a different perspective. Lots to think about in regards to my wardrobe! Thanks!
