Am torn…🤔🤔🤔…want to know what happens when you turn the power off the heater BUT…not keen on you burning the van down. And when Rebecca gets a bigger van you might just need the bigger one. Just a thought. The tv experiment comes to mind.🤣🤣🤣
Mel Mel Mel, you are one funny dude who managed to share many useful and valuable information. Totally enjoy your videos. Thanks mate. Many Thumbs up and sub!
we have also vlogged the installation of a diesel heater we just love it and saving so much on gas now xxxx by the way so you want to do a sticker swop with a fellow you tube channel xx
Hi Mel. Like you, I'm a qualified Scuba Diver. & I've Dived in Scotland & the Northeast coast. But my Arthritis has put pay to anymore diving. So. Just traveling in my Motorhome now. Great video as usual. From Jeff & Helen.
the heater wont go on fire. The combustion is contained in the chamber and exhaust gases and unburnt fuel are piped out the exhaust pipe. if the fan stalls the fuel gets cut off, the only damage that occurs is the control board overheats. It may actually survive one or two power fails. that is why there is a cool-down cycle in normal usage. Never ever just pull the plug, You will cook the circuit board! But no flames. Very safe design!
Another good video. My 2kw diesel heater has just arrived ready for fitting next week. Only got a swb transit that I’m converting into a fishing bus / camper
I have a Planar diesel heater under my driver seat. It started overheating and cutting out. After some searching I found a Tesco receipt had gotten caught where the air is sucked in. Lesson learnt to be tidier :)
On the diesel heater front you should check out David Mcluckie's channel.. he's just done a vid on a unit to cut the fuel pump off if the leisure battery voltage gets too low. Reduces the risk of overheating because the unit will recognise that there's no fuel and will shut down in a controlled manner.
The heater will burn off the access fuel Mel for a second and the pump won't pump anymore fuel so no worries "But" things will heat up a LITTLE because it hasn't been through the cool down cycle but I haven't had issues, there's a little plywood box built around mine and it's usually packed with cloths around that, my hot press lol. When my battery has been too low my heater just cuts out like disconnecting power, no fire and still works every time and this has happened half a dozen times; it's an Eberspaecher 2kw but same thing basically. My van is a draughty old boy and 2kw is more than enough even in winter 👍 Good choice going lower mate 👏
Aha! So that's how I need to wire the negative to the grounding point! I have watched numerous videos on the electrics and no one every clearly shows how/where to wire up the ground from - just jumped over to your Shunt for Dummies video and now I'm ready to wire up Big Bertha (the Battery) properly in Sprintie the Campervan, including my Battery Monitor. Hoping I don't have to make too much of a change to my electric board to do it properly. Thanks Mel, you're a star!! 😀🚑🛠🚐✅
Instant heater turn off video …. Yes please! Surely the fuel pump will also turn off …. I think it will be a massive anti-climax in that nothing will happen. But for entertainment value, it would be great to have an explosion to rival a Colin furze firework experience.
Hi Mel, we hope you are both well and monty. Me and my future better half would like to know if you and Rebecca would consider tying the knot while living in your van? Great videos both.
Electrics is easy enough need a blade fuse block and wire everything to the ooss and neg of the fuse block and then the fuse block to the battery, then sepereatly ground the negative of the battery bank to the chassis
Don’t worry about showing what happens on a diesel heater that unexpectedly loses power, it’s already happened to plenty of people 😂 No real fire risk, but the mother board circuit will probably over heat and will need replacing if that happens, tho some people have got away no damage.
Nice one Mel. Second your comments about the Maxpeedingrods 2KW. Mine was here in 3 days. It's been in my Maxus for about a year and is still going strong after many weekends away this year.
Another great video Mel, been thinking about another night heater. Very helpful as would have brought a 5KW and it would have been too powerful, so saved me 👍😎 Will go for the 2KW, only seen 5KW Chinese ones lately, until tonight on your link. Got an Eberspacher 2KW, but just starting to play up, so thinking of going for a cheap Chinese one.
Mel diesel heaters are brilliant! Have 2k in my RV got rid of the propane furnace it drained my batteries and I never felt safe because of its age. I have to investigate the diesel water heaters? Get rid of that propane unit. Best wishes always
Thanks Mel, another great informative video and thanks for reading out my question. Very interesting as with me not yet having the diesel heater, to be able to look inside taught me a lot. Thanks again and yes it would be great to see what happens when the power is taken away when on full. Cant wait to see that. Cheers.
I did cut the power to the 5kw heater I reconnected within 3 minutes ish nothing got to hot and the control board servived and all still work's. Great channel Mel. I have just got the 2kw heater for my doblo as its a very small van.
Evening Mel. I know you’ve just talked about diesel heaters…..but I fancy an all in one heater. Mainly because of your saying keep it simple keep it safe. If it’s all together I don’t have to worry about fuel lines etc. Are there any disadvantages to having an all in one? If your coming up the east coast of Scotland, you’ll recognise me, I’ll be the lunatic in a works van chasing you for a sticker 😆😆.
Hi Mel, another great vid, I have the same problem with my diesel heater, its a 5kw, very warm!!! I bought mine for a 23 foot caravan, now its in a SWB transit ( after being put in a 16 foot van) its been great value but its a bit overkill in a small van, 10 mins and your melting!!! not complaining!!!! take care pal.
Mel been watching you since the beginning.Thank you so much as your videos are informative and funny hope you can do one on how to fit a shower one day .
Hi Mel. New subscriber and poring over your vids as moving from a boat into a van over the next few months. Great content. A 'tip' that I haven't seen mentioned on any van builds that I was advised to do on my boat, way back, was with regard treating any ply/cladding/etc wood surfaces on the side next to any insulation/barrier cavity/ When lining my narrowboat I made a 50/50 mixture of PVC glue/water in a tin and painted the 'back' of any wall/ceiling panels/cladding/whatnot to help seal them from moisture. Have you heard of this, what do you think of this 'tip' and do you think it of any relevance on a van build? You're an inspiration bud. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge and regards.
Nice videos... keep them coming....Over the years I've noticed the rapidly increasing number of wood burners in full timer vans (spot the chimneys). **What's the deal with van insurance?** HEATAS don't have any installation guidelines either? ... (btw Unlikely I'll retrofit one as I'm stealthy managing with my Wallas XC Duo).. Thanks..
@@BigVanSmallWorld Thanks.. Not cheap circa £1600 but when you're in the van throughout the year... the benefits.... of dry heat .. 2 in 1 (heat/cooking) .. fuel from vehicle tank.. ultra economical ...100% silent outside van... compact .. abilty to drive away from trouble within minutes... etc for me made it a no brainer, all these fit together for a stealthy lifestyle. What's the van insurance situation with wood burners? I've never been able to get a straight answer.
Hi Mel. Just about to start my journey on building a campervan from a Sprinter. Would you think 250k miles is a bit to much for a sprinter? It is in fair condition and great price. Thanks!
Hello Mel, for my curious mind, what do you work with part of helping other people with their vans? If you fancy to answer. Another thing, it would be great follow your adventures up to Scotland over the winter. Where in England are you now? Regards Rickard from Sweden 🇸🇪
Hi Mel question about heater. I see new scanias have diesel heater fitted somewhere in the engine bay and have no any ticking noise from diesel pump. Perhaps they use costumise version that I could buy to DIY for my diesel heater? Thanks
Hi Mel loving the video’s hopefully getting a van next year to convert I have a question about the diesel heater’s could I run one on red diesel (derv I think some people call it ) or have you to use normal diesel? Sorry if it’s a daft question.
Hi Mel's I've just bought the same heater this might be a stupid question but does the base plate get really hot? I have vinyl flooring was planning on cutting a larger hole in the van floor and then fixing the base plate to the vinyl flooring. Any advice would be great. Your videos have been a massive help to my conversion
If you do the diesel heater test to see if it will catch fire when you shut off the electric supply. Will your heater still be in situ for your test. Maybe not a good idea. But would be much more realistic and i am sure would get more views. PS please do not reply to this comment.
Evening to you Mel quick question 😉 would you say that just shy of £20 for 5 3m lengths of T&G cladding is a good price? in the process of insulating and cladding our MWB 2011 sprinter. great content as always cheers aaron
Hi Mel bought the 2kw heater off Amazon and just finished testing it. It looks like I got a version with a very limited control panel, it looks identical to the ones all over RU-vid but has very little in the way of settings. Just wondering did yours come with the limited control panel? Or if there's a way to open up more features in it
@@BigVanSmallWorld thanks for the reply noticed someone has left a review saying the same on Amazon. Heater works well but would of been nice to have the extra options and settings as it has no temperature settings it's just hz setting up and down.
another good vid , a small query though , some forums recommend the fuel tank with the filler cap at one end , this one is in the middle , or are you piped straight in to the vans fuel tank ? cheers Mark
How easy do you think it would be 'working from van' full time? I'm worried the constant need to move and find good parkups with strong WiFi will be quite stressful as well as needing a very large battery bank! Thanks
Hi Mel , I keep reading that the 2kw are not actually 2kw but 5kw . How would we know. I have a lwb transit with a 5kw which is too much and would like to swap it for 2kw but only if it’s definitely 2kw. Thanks also are the electric connectors interchangeable between the heaters or are they brand specific?
Hi Mark I still haven’t fitted mine yet but they are definitely smaller not looked at the plugs yet I’ll probably have a go at it this week and I’ll definitely be making a video all about it so stay tuned 👍🤓👍
You’d need to get someone who has all the fire safe regs HETAS in order to fit safely and correctly. 👍🏻 Give Cotswold Chimneys a shout and see if Simon would fit it for you. cotswoldchimneys.co.uk
