Hey all!
Welcome to our latest video! As you might have seen we are just back home after a amazing @airportfra trip this week.
We arrived at monday, starting the day with rain. But slowly the rain converted into heavy snowfall. For over 9 hours of non stop snow action gave us the oppertunity to film the best action right in front of us.
A lot of new content had been filmed this trip. But first enjoy this 34 minute de-icing video!
Thank you all so much for watching! If you like our content, Please feel free to hit that like and subscribe button!
Cheers,
AmsterdamAviationYT
----------
A little information about N*ICE. The de-icing company that is working at the airport to make sure every aircraft is leaving in a safe and ice free way!
Frankfurt has a large capacity of de-icing trucks.
17x Vestergaard Elephant BETA de-icing truck with a capacity of 8000L. One 4000L water tank and two fluid tanks of 2000L
34x Vestergaard Elephant BETA-15 de-icing truck with a capacity of 8000L. One 4000L water tank and two fluid tanks of 2000L
2x Vestergaard Elephant BETA 15 XXL de-icing truck with a capacity of 12.000L. One 5000L water tank one 4000L fluid tank and another 3000L fluid tank
2x Vestergaard Elephant My de-icing trucks with a capacity of 7600L. One 3600L water tank and two fluid tanks of 2000L
The fluid comes out of the nozzle with a temperature of 55-80C or 130-180F!
The amount of de-icing fluid that is required for a Boeing 747 with only frost on it is around 400 Liters. If it is fully covered in snow it takes around a whopping 1000 Liters.
The fluids that are being used are De-icing fluid and Anti-icing fluids.
(Type-I) The De-icing fluid is the orange fluid being used.
The Anti-icing fluids are coming in three different varieties.
(Type-II) The clear fluid, This fluid is used on smaller aircrafts with very little ice and retains its effect for the least long.
(Type-III) The Yellow fluid, This fluid used on short-mid-long range aircraft and has a sufficient holdover time, just like the Type-I
(Type-IV) The Green fluid, High Viscosity, Long holdover time.

I have watched hundreds of aircraft videos, but none like this. The roar of the engines with the snowfall and all the de-icing going on, made this video very special. As the very first aircraft (Lufthansa 747-8) came up, I got goosebumps.

Amazing video...I have so many questions hope someone can answer, are there passengers on board during the de-icing, why was the king & queen the only aircraft fully de-iced as the top of the fuselage on the dreamliners looked untouched, how long does the de-icing last, are the vehicles manned by drivers in the cabs, are the pilots and de- icing crew talking during the process or is it a standard procedure, what's the different type of fluid....really fascinating to see, loved all the Queens...and interesting that the ice showed the ribs in the fuselage
@AmsterdamAviationYT
@AmsterdamAviationYT 6 месяцев назад
That are a lot os Question haha! 1. Yes the passengers are onboard while De-icing 2. Tbh i have no idea, I think someone can explain that to us. 3. The de-icing process takes 30~45 min depending what Aircraft type it is, and basically they only need it for takeoff due to the accumulation of ice on the control service. 4. Depends of which airport, but these trucks are indeed operated by the driver in the cabin, but you also got the oldschool trucks with 1 person in the bucket and the other one driving. 5. They got a special frequency for de-icing, basically their own ATC which tell’s the pilots to hold and when they are ready. 6. I believe they use different fluids, they green one is more expensive and only used for control service areas ( wings, tail, vertical stabilizer ) the yellow one is less expensive and is used on the fuselage to basically just remove the layer of ice. I hope this helps 😜
@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102
@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 6 месяцев назад
Planes generally de-ice at the gate or at the pad, depending on the aircraft. (Look at an airport like ORD which has a big deicing pad that is generally used for smaller planes, while big planes get deiced at the gate.)
@RobertSimac
@RobertSimac 6 месяцев назад
I think the top of the aircraft is not deiced (sometimes) because it is not the 'critical' surface for the flight. On the other hand it can be critical if there is a ton (additional weight) of snow/ice on top of the plane. For light snow dusting at the fuselage top, it jut may not be worth wasting the fluid...
@AmsterdamAviationYT
@AmsterdamAviationYT 6 месяцев назад
That’s a great answer, I indeed think it’s about the extra weight it can add!
@renehenckens
@renehenckens 6 месяцев назад
@@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102I doubt aircraft get de-iced at the gate. There is a ton of people on the ground around a gate. There are fuelers, baggage handlers, caterers, authority, pilots doing the walk-around etc. Loads of activity around an aircraft at the gate. And de-icing fluid is hot glycol at around 90 degrees, so it is both very toxic and very hot. Way to dangerous to do it at the gate. You would have to clear a giant area around the gate to do the de-icing. And that would occupy the parking space, which is far too valuable. Much better to de-ice at a designated platform

I'm new at this but if the have safety rods on the boom arms why are they so high? Would it no be bettet if they were closer, and would it not save on the fluid? The only reason I can see that they stay so high is, the they have a better vantage view but, would it not be jus the same if they got closer.

@AmsterdamAviationYT
@AmsterdamAviationYT 6 месяцев назад
It sticks on the aircraft! Depending on what kind of fluid their using there is a time how long it stains
@RobertSimac
@RobertSimac 6 месяцев назад
I think it sticks - up to the certain speed ... I think the liquid sticks and is very much useful at takeoff (critical) and initial climb. Once aircraft is up to speed and in cruise, I think the deicing fluid is gone, and the deicing is done by leading edge heating and also by engine (nacelle?) heating from within...

@MR-xc3sw 6 месяцев назад
@@AboutPlanes I suggest a lot less air travel. Most of it is needless recreation. Flights to attend climate change conferences should be the first Flights outlawed by the green new deal democrats are pushing. Eventually if the climate is truly in trouble air travel will have to be almost completely eliminated. So will shipping everything we use all over the globe. Products will have to be made locally and sold locally like it was before globalism took over . If none of these measures are taken by climate saviors the there never was a climate disaster.

Don’t forget that aviation is trying it’s best to be greener. And will I do agree a lot of short flights should be replaced by train, the infrastructure is still not ready and is not going to be ready for a long time. Long haul flights will never go away, and also don’t forget how much cargo is being transported by air
