WIP Wednesday - Trying out pastels for Gunpla!

This week I try my hand at pastels on Gunpla. I'm not super happy with the results but I learned alot about how pastels apply pigment. I'm looking forward to adding this new skill set to my arsenal of customization techniques!

I'm glad you finally touched on this. This is a very cost effective way to bring out highlights without an air brush. I use a soft brush to apply in crevices and a small makeup sponge to apply the layers as needed. To me it's better to use a knife to shave the pastel into a powder and work with that. I'll send a couple of pics with my pastel kits to show you some of the results I got. Great video again, starting to creep in on 600 already!

I had thought of shaving down the bars into powder after the fact, that makes me feel better I’m at least on the right track.

if you scrape pastel off the stick with a razor blade you can apply it like weathering powder. I use it as a cheap way to weather kits.

That’s a hot tip. I’ve been seeing much better ways like that. I’m definitely glad I picked these up, lots to learn.

This definitely looks like an interesting technique to try out. I'm thinking maybe to achieve a color fading effect on a heat hawk blade or other melee weapons? I checked out some pastel painting technique videos and it looks like oil pastels are the way to go - blending with tissue paper or just with your finger. A clear coat of varnish is a must because, like you already mentioned, the plastic surface is too slick. Looking forward to your other videos!

I wonder how they would work as a weathering element? Especially oil pastels.

I think using these as a pigment for dry brushing and catching edges would be great!

Trial and error with gunpla is definately the way to go, this turned out better than I expected, id never have thought to use pastels with gunpla at all so this was pretty interesting to see. Definately agree that a sponge applicator tool would definately help with controlling the flow of the colour. Oil pastels might work a lot smoother going forward. Looking forward to more of your experiments man
