In this week's episode, our very own Richard 2E0SXX heads out into the field (actually, the park next to the store) to show just how easy and cost-effective it is to set up a wire antenna and even make contact with Ham operators as far away as Slovenia using just a Xiegu X6100 and a bit of wire!
If you're new to ham radio or looking to upgrade your equipment, our wire antenna special is a must-see. Learn how to set up a wire antenna and make contacts with other ham operators from around the world.

Impresive for a bag, a radio and a wire. Just goes to show how good a minimal system works. Loved the video bu the way.

Hi Richard, great to see you out presenting a practical video..... I enjoyed the one you did with Tony last year with the JPC 12..... I was disappointed there was no Voice SSB contact with that display so it was nice to see a practical demonstration on voice. ... It would work nice for JOTA/WOTA/POTA despite its limitations..... 73 Brian G0RDH 👴

Yeah, good to see this type presentation can we have more please. Oh, what is the ten metre wire used. I am sure the eighteenth will be great, but what about the customers who can't get to your store. Thanks, keep up the good content.

Yes, would love to see more. This video had a sense of realism to it, the sort of everyday real life situations a portable station might deal with. A random tree as a support, great stuff, yes please do some more.👍

Excellent, just goes to show that a wet bit of string on the floor will still work providing that the propagation is running. How about, for the next time, putting it up in the air, using quality coax and more power ?

Hi guys, Great video. Muchly enjoyable. I would have liked to see a few more contacts made, but hey ho, that video proved a point. Just One Major question though. Was that a pre sked contact please. I have Never had That kind of luck so quickly even from home even with 100 Watts into an antenna before,? ? ?. Many Thanks. Kind Regards, Ray, M0RAY.

@@raydavidsonm0ray.777 Thank you Ray. There were other contacts but Janez S51DX was the only one that responded to our email asking if we could use his QSO. He does have the best voice in Europe. To answer your question, this was not a pre-arranged QSO, we were twiddling the VFO and he just boomed in.

Enjoyed that. I have just finished putting up a 107 ft long wire at my cabin. I have it threaded through the trees. It seems to work well. I notice you didn’t use a counter poise. VO1OK
@Martin_Lynch
@Martin_Lynch Год назад
Hello Michael, Many thanks for your comment. If you have the space may we recommend using 132ft of wire with a 49:1 Unun, as this will be a Half Wave on the 80m band, and may tune more bands than with 107ft of wire with a 9:1. We did not use a counterpoise as were showing the most easiest antenna / radio setup. However, if used at a home location we do recommend that a counterpoise is used.

Excellent video. Love the format. More please Could that have been achieved without the unun? Antenna straight into the radio as you said it had a built in tuner??

I love the idea of ham radio as a hobby, and I'd love to take up the hobby purely as a listener, but I can't get past the fact that the only thing ham radio operators really talk about are their health problems, the weather or, above all, the radio they're talking on. 😂

Great video with this kit, hopefully you can do more with it. Curious if the 10m of wire needed the internal tuner? I didn't see a counterpoise or earth if that was needed?
@Martin_Lynch
@Martin_Lynch Год назад
Hello James, thank you for the response. To answer your question, the antenna wire was measured at exactly 10m long, and when connected with the 49:1 Unun and radio in the location as shown on the video, the SWR was 1.8 on the 20m band. So this was tuned with the internal tuner of the X6100.

No counterpoise or earth used - exactly as seen in the video - nice and easy setup.

How important is the length of coax used on that wire antenna? I noticed it matched the length of the antenna wire in the video.
@Martin_Lynch
@Martin_Lynch Год назад
We would recommend at least 5m, as it does form part of the antenna system. We used a 10m length as this is how it came off the shelf.

When it comes to "rolling my own " wire antennas, I get confused with whether I need to use a balun or not. Also want to know if the antenna needs to be grounded, or just the coax? Thanks; KE8NFK
@Martin_Lynch
@Martin_Lynch Год назад
Hello Phil, when using a Half Wave End Fed antenna; the antenna can only be 10m, 20m or 40m long (the length will need to be adjusted to get the best SWR on the lowest band that it is a Half Wave on). It must use a 49:1 Unun. We did not earth any part of the system for the video, however if being used at a home location it may help with noise to either use a counterpoise at the Unun and / or ground at the radio end.
