Wire Splicing an EASY GUIDE. Permanently joining two or more wires with a soldering iron. Want to know how to securely splice two or more wires with a soldering iron? In this a subscriber requested video I’m going to be looking at splicing. I would define splicing as a means of permanently joining two or more electrical wires to enable uninterrupted current flow, and the emphasis has to be on ‘uninterrupted’ flow. That’s the key. That’s why I prefer to solder my spliced joints as I personally feel it’s the most reliable method of joining wires. I won’t be using off-the-shelf plastic connectors here. As a belt and braces kind of guy, I’ll be using my soldering iron, wire cutters, flux cored solder, a sharp blade and a few simple techniques that should enable anyone to achieve a good, solid, reliable electrical splice.
I'm no expert, just a keen amateur, but hopefully this how to guide will cover the basics nicely and enable you to safely splice with confidence.

I agree with you on soldering. As an amateur radio operator _(AF6AS)_ crimping and *NOT* soldering is practically _heresy._ That said, I was taught early on that the priority is to make a good *MECHANICAL* connection first, then a good *ELECTRICAL* one!

Thanks for making this video. You make it look so easy without all the fancy tools. Very useful information indeed!

Sir, both of second methods are good. But I as professional in electronics will recommend a Flush cutter and Stanley Automatic Wire Stripper FMHT0-96230 for ease and professional quality Overall nice video

I was taught to splay the wires, then cross lap them, before twisting and soldering, for a stronger bond.

Nice idea, not sure how well it would work in a truck dash or tail light wiring. They don't give you any extra wire or room. Plus it's comparatively time and labor intensive

Like everything else, it takes practice. But the benefits of a reliable connection are well worth it : )

In the 30 years since I was introduced to dielectric grease I have yet to have a failure that wasn't do to a short wire pulling out as I tried to crimp it. Down inside a dash a solder connection with short wires would be impossible

I know what you mean. I always thinks there's too little wiring on anything in a vehicle. You pull out a switch and you can barely see the underside of it as the cables are so short. I've lost track of how many times I've cut things off, added extra cable, then reattached ; ) Of course if access is way of out reach, as you're describing, then you do whatever you can do. Best wishes, Geoff

That seems to be the story of my life. Every inch of wire the manufacturer saves they make more money and the mechanics job a lot harder. Sometimes I feel like putting my feet on the rest of the dash and pulling to try and get a little extra. I think the engineers who design them are the bastard son of a bastard son of a mechanic and they are trying to get even.

Nice video. I have a question. What is the use in soldering the wire? If I simply twist the wire and wrap it in insulation (electrical) tape it simply works..

I feel that a lighter does a better job on heat shrink than a soldering iron.
